New Feature - Want / Have / Had Status on Products

Rolled out a new feature this morning on OzBargain.

In the beginning, there were nodes. Nodes can be deals or forum discussion topics (and recently, classified posts). For deals they can be taxonomised with categories and tags. Something pre-defined, vs. something in freestyle.

Then tags start growing in functionalities. We start to have product tags (like Galaxy 5), brand tags (like ASUS), product category/type tags (like Tablet) and others (that are in development). It helps us to organise the deals that were posted. When you visit a deal page, for example a Steam game sale, you can see all the related products listed on the sidebar.

We have now added a new relationship between the users and the product tags. You can now define the status with those products. They can be

  • Something that you want
  • Something that you currently have
  • Something that you once had

It helps you to keep track what you have and want. Definitely help to solve the recurring issues I saw on those Steam deals, where people buy those 75% off + 20% further discount deal only to find the game already exists in their Steam library.

To record the status of the products,

  • Hover over the thumbnail image of the product,
  • Click on "wish?" link
  • Choose the new status, or remove existing status

You can also see the list and search all the brand and product tags here — All Brands & All Products.

To see all the products that you want / have, go to "My Account" -> "lists" -> "products" and hopefully you will be using that page often to move the products from want to have :)

Comments

  • Is this information public?

    • Your product list page is only visible to you. So no, you cannot share your want list yet.

      • I was more thinking that I would not want the 'have' list public.

        • Sure. Intention of this development is for people to keep track of their buyings. After being on OzBargain for a few years people do tend to accumulate things which a system would be useful to help them to keep track.

I can't see any of them needs to be visible to anyone other than yourself. Unless you wish to share your want list.

We might however show the number of wants for a specific product — a way to help the merchants to figure out what they should put on sale.

        • I think sharing the want is desirable. Let's say my birthday party/wedding/whatever is coming up, I can slyly post the link on Facebook/Twitter/email.

I often use Amazon's wishlist to gift friends, family or random websites that I want to support by buying them a gift. At least with an OzBargain want, they can find the cheapest price.

        • Would we get notifications if our "wanted" product goes on special?

I was hoping the tag feature would get this (for Brita Maxtra cartridges) but this is close enough!

        • +1

Our problem is still that people don't tag properly - so either items you want don't get tagged, or people tagging wrong products (sometimes deliberately, ie competitors product).

          Still looking for solutions.

  • Nice!
    Want: Dell UltraSharp U3011
    Have: Sony Alpha A65

    What I would like;
Have any Dell Ultrasharp deals highlighted.
Have any lens's or accesories related to my A65 highlighted? (Pipedream I know.)

  • New Feature, which helps me a lot

  • This has potential to be an outstanding addition so I hope the idea is refined e.g: • notification based on "Wish tag" combinations.

If I am after Sim cards for instance, I'm not too fussed whether 'Telstra $30 Pre-Paid Sim Starter Kit' and 'Vodafone' would return 1/2 Price Telstra, Boost, Voda & Optus Sim Packs @ Coles incl unwanted "Boost & Optus"; as long as it get my desired '$30 Google/T Long-life credit' plus '$30=10.3GB VHA' pack items ✓"1/2 Price."

    • +1

      Tried the Search Alerts feature?

    • Sweet function. Thanks for tip.

  • Do you get an email notification if a product you've labelled as "want" is listed?

    • No.

      • Thanks for the reply! Possible future feature?
