Best Credit Card to get for QFF points?

Is it the Woolworths Qantas Credit Card?

I wanted to get it ages ago but wasn't earning over 50k pa so didn't bother, but I am now and have a reasonably high cash flow so I'm missing out on potential rewards.

So is this the best card to get? I see they got 16,000 bonus points if you sign up before end of august. But they have an $89 annual fee? Any better offers?

I just got one of those and it is much better than the Jetstar one linked to QFF which gives you a similar amount of points but costs about double the amount (around $150 but $30-$40 for additional card holders).

I reckon for the amount of QFF points you get it is a great value card.

  • Does it have to be a QFF point card? If not, Amex platinum edge could be the best card for you:
    - Free domestic return flight (http://www.americanexpress.com/australia/campaigns/platinum_…)
    - 3 points per dollar spent at major supermarkets
    - 2 points - major petrol stations
    - 0.5 point - utilities, insurances, telecommunication, and government bodies
    - 1 point for somewhere else (eg. linked to paypal account)
    - 10K bonus points for new account (15K bonus points with referral link, pm me if interested and I'll also get bonus point if you are approved)
    - NO supplementary card fee
    - points can be transferred to 8 parters airlines (including Virgin Australia Velocity Frequent Flyer, Etihad Guest, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, Air New Zealand AirpointsTM , THAI Royal Orchid Plus, Malaysia Airlines Enrich and Cathay Pacific Asia MilesTM)
    - normal card fee is $195 pa, but it's worth it with the return flight (you don't really need to use the flight yourself, you can always book for someone else, or book at the end of the year to get 2 flights at once)

If you have a professional association membership, you can sign up for the same card with only $149 p.a fee, same values but the signup bonus is different.

  • Sounds like this card is the best for points. The only thing is; is the 16,000 extra points really worth it when you have to pay $89 fee (even though this is relatively cheap)? I hold a Commonwealth Visa card ($40k limit); don't pay any fees at all. Or perhaps the $195 fee for a Amex Platinum Edge credit card, with 10-15,000 extra points and one domestic return flight)?

The 16,000 Qantas frequent flyer points equates to the following (at Frequent Flyer Store):

    https://store.qantas.com/Catalogue.a2?page=SearchResults&fro…

Do you think that good value for $89?

For example; the 16,000 points (for PS3 FIFA 13 game) on Frequent Flyer Store is valued at about $44 on Ebay. Good that you are doing your homework on the value of paying for Credit Card fees but I don't think they really offer good value for money.

    • True, each to their own need.

For Amex card, 1 point = 0.7 cent. The best way to use the point is for flight/flight upgrade or gift card.
eg. 6,750 points = $50 gift card (around $2250 spent at Coles, WW, etc)

But for people who don't spend much and have no mean to use the return flight, Amex Qantas Discovery card should be better (no annual fee) (Bonus 7,500 QFF points, only 8K with referal, 1 QFF point per dollar spent)
      https://www.americanexpress.com/au/content/frequent-flyer-ca…

However, a Bankwest Zero master card or 28 degrees card is always recommended to go with an Amex card.

      • Thank you; that Amex Qantas Discovery card sounds good (no annual fee) with those bonus points, and you only need $35k pa income etc to qualify.

Do you think you can link it to your current Qantas Frequent Flyer account or is this offer only for opening new accounts?

I always zero out my credit card each month to avoid interest; am hoping any people that apply for these cards act responsibly too.

        • I don't have this card, but when I applied for other Amex card, I had to supply my QFF account number, so I believe it works the same for this card.

    • You always get more value for QFF points when you buy gift cards. So the 16,000 points is worth more than one $100 gift card so is definitely worth more than the $89 fee. Simple.

      • Yes, thank you I was looking for the gift card/points comparison.

Only thing is to cancel that card after the first year or another $89 fee to come.

        • Shouldn't over-do it though. Applying for too many credit cards will look bad on your credit file.

        • Not really - it just raises your credit risk while you have them. As long as you don't get any defaults against your name, they can be cancelled at any time and once cancelled they disappear from your credit file.

  • Yeah, I've got a 28 Degrees Card as well. Really don't want any more plastic in my wallet, but I figure I really do need to jump on this bandwagon. Thanks for the input.
