Had one of these in my laptop since August last year. Fine drive, but for about the same price you can get the newer, two-platter Western Digital which has higher performance and lower power consumption than the Samsung.

doesn't seem much of a bargain. MSY have fujitsu, seagate and WD 2.5inch SATA drives for $145, $159 and $155 respectively

I haven't bothered checking for a while, but Samsung were the first to release a proper 9.5mm thick 2.5" 500GB drive. At the time there was some competition but it was from 11.5mm thick drives - that wouldn't fit in normal external chassis or notebooks.

If you're buying a 500GB 2.5" drive make certain it's 9.5mm if you want it in a notebook.
