  • Wow interesting concept. Has anyone has any experience with yet? I'm worried for such a cheap price the temperature would fluctuate too much and defeat the purpose of a sousvide!

  • +1

I've used this for a few months now…

pros - convenient having 2 cookers in 1
nothing really beats it in this price range.

cons - not very precise (but what do you expect for this price!),
very small capacity - 5.5L gets filled up very quickly with the wire stand, pouches and water - also, because it's not that deep, it's hard to stand medium/large pieces upright, which is apparently much better than lying them flat,
it takes AGES to heat up, so make sure you start with pre-warmed water!

overall, I'm pretty happy with it as an entry into sous vide cooking :)
(it also produced pretty good red wine lamb shanks using the slow cooker function!)

  • anyone used one of these?

how reliable are they for sous vide?

I've been making do with a ziplock, crockpot, a good thermometer and vigilance. Would love the real deal.

this is what I use, connected to a $50 14L Aldi Crockpot. All machines will take a long time to heat up and it's always advised to fill the tub with hot water. Don't forget you'll need to also purchase a vacuum sealer and bags if you want to sous vide. Size of water bath really matters, as the larger water baths will hold a more stable temp (which is all important is sous vide)

Don't know much about the sunbeam.

  • This looks like good value, however there are other options out there for sous vide other than a dedicated machine.

I use a temperature controller I used to use for my homebrewing connected to a slow cooker and it works great. It is extremely accurate (to a tenth of a degree from memory) and has done well so far.

I'm planning to upsize as my slow cooker is quite small, but all I'll do is keep an eye out for a large slow cooker at an op shop.

  • It looks like a printer.

  • This is easy to make yourself, you just need a temperature controller and cut up and electrical extension cable and plug in a slow cooker or rice cooker then the controller turns the heat off when it gets to the desire temp then turns back on when it drops in temp…
