  • Nice, hope there's some stuff left by Sat morning…

Only downside is that the fishing licence will cost more than the gear…

    • +4

Fishing license helps with eco sustaintability. Think about it as an investment for our future generations.

      • +1

Agreed. I don't mind paying the fee if I know it's going towards helping sustain fish stocks.
Just out of curiosity, What licenses do you need in your states? Im in WA and I don't believe we need one if fishing from land unless it's freshwater.

        • Only commercial fisherman should require a fishing license. It is just another revenue scam for the state governments.

      • -5

        Investment you say?
So if I go fishing with my friends do you think we are going to empty the ocean?
We'd be lucky to catch half a dozen fish between the lot of us and sometimes they are undersized so they end up back in the drink. There are plenty of enough fish already.

        • +3

Now if everyone was like you we wouldn't have a problem!

        • wow what an ignorant comment

  • +1

I was just thinking about getting some fishing gear. Great timing.

    • Thanks saaron.

    • Me too

i've always been longing for a massive rod because mine is a bit on the small side.

    • that's what she said

    • Its not the size of your rod, its the mug holding it that counts. … Or was it the bait?

  • +1

Did you notice if they had discounted lures including soft plastics? Some really cheap Berkley gulps soft plastics would be great

    • +1

Sorry, no. May go back in tomorrow and I'll let you know.

      • Cheers, I'll check the local Kmart tomorrow

  • Just called Kmart Campbellfield and they have stacks in stock. And they're open 24 hours! Anyone keen?

    • +1

There might not be any left after I arrive :P

  • +2

These have been on special at Victorian KMart (Ringwood, Burwood, Brandon Park, Parkmore) for a few weeks now.
So most all the JW stock is sold (or damaged) at these shops, but still a fair range of Sport Fisher gear (as listed above).
According to one staff member they're not clearing all their fishing stock just the JW stock for their new range of 'home brand': Sport Fisher.

The above shops might still also have stock of:
    Tackle box +300 bits $4
    Hand reels (no line) 30 - 45c
    Hand reels (with line) $1 - 1.50
Sport Fisher line (all sizes/lengths) $1.80
    Small-fat utility knife $2
    Smaller JW Reels $6
JW 6 and 8 foot collapsible rods + reels $12
    JW collapsible rods $5

    • +1

Thanks Wolfy. The JW reels I saw at Richmond are perfect. Still sealed in their boxes and/or plastic. Rods look awesome as well. Definitely not damaged. There were 2 whole isles of specials, and I can't believe these haven't been snapped up if they've been on sale for so long.

      • Last time I went fishing was years ago, but for those prices, I grabbed 3 rods, reels, a bunch of line, some hand casters, one of the tackle boxes and other stuff … it's a good deal.

Not all the discounted prices are ticketed either, at Burwood KMart, the JW collapsible rods scan for $5 but are not ticketed as on clearance.

This is a reelly good deal.

    • +2

      Nice line

      • +1

        Nothing fishy about it

        • Classic best three posts I've seen on OZB for a while.

        • +1

Classic best three posts I've seen on OZB for a while.

the best you've cast your eye on???

  • I saw braid for $6 though it is thick as elephant's tail. No discounts for softplastic or lures. 2 brands - Sports Fisher and Jarvis Walker are discounted to clear space for new stock . Not everything discounted: just the cheapest. Just rods (Quantum and some Jarvis Walker excluded), reels, combos, some line or braid, accessories.

  • I'm a noob at this.. haven't done fishing at all.
I'm interested in getting one of the rods but could anyone tell me a complete list of things I should get to make the rod function?

    Thanks :)

    • +1

Just don't buy a kids one. Look for a "spinning" combo should be about 6"6-7"0 long. And relatively light. But it all depends on your location you will be fishing

      • Thanks! I have no idea where to fish.. perhaps Moonee Ponds but oh well. I'll give KMart Moonee Ponds a visit and see how it goes. If not, it will be Richmond then!

I'm guessing I have to get a ROD + The spinning wheel thing + the line + the hook + bait … :)

        • depends on the fishing technique. easiest/laziest is using bait imo.
for bait fishing youll need a rod, reel, line, swivel, sinker, hooks, bait (maybe floats and headtorch)
i recommend a medium action rod around 6-7' with 6-10 pound line

        • -8

I'd be careful - your face might scare all the fish away!

    • +1

make sure you don't forget the fish too…

    • +2

Definitely give it a shot! Trust me, you'll be hooked! ;)

      • +1

getting hooked is a matter of debait

    • +5

VERY IMPORTANT: make sure you also have money in your pocket to pick up fish from the supermarket on the way home.
This way you can be sure to be able to say to the missus "look at what I got - all that money on fishing gear was worth it" ;-)

      • +2

and it came deep fried in batter with onion rings and chips on the side. they just followed the fish out of the water into a paper wrap!

    • Rod and Reel Combo
Sinker(Sizes depend on where and what you want to catch)
Hook(Again, depends on where and what you want to catch)

      and of course, bait

  • Is this nationwide?

  • -6

These $5 rods are for kids, you can't possibly catch anything prob a boot of your even lucky.

  • So basically they are removing a brand name and replacing it with a no name which is in line with Kmart being a $2 shop these days.

At least there can't be home brand pillow pets. Oh wait they tried that. Just so bad. How did they bother to distribute them after seeing the final product?

    • No Kmart has already removed most the name brand fishing rods and replaced it with their crappy brand a year ago. Now their crappy brand has been selling poorly and they are trying to clear stock of their crap brand and replace it with more of their crap brand.

      • +2

        Gccmelb is right.

I have complained in the last year 3 times about how they have taken their fishing area from an OK thing to complete junk.

They are completely redoing it, but with in house brands again.

Kmart used to be good for fishing gear, now most of it is shite…

        • Most of the rods there are for begineers… once you got a year or 2 using them, you probably will not buy from Kmart anymore. I will go see if there are any good lures on sale or not.

        • K-mart used to be good for lots of things but now its full of Red Dot $hit.

That said as a company they were going broke selling brands and now they are profitable selling junk…the way of the world confuses me.

  • Kmart Hornsby basically already cleared out as at 5am 23 August.

The guy at the register said the sale has been on for a couple of weeks and some people have literally taken trolleys full of stuff…

  • plenty of stock at Lake Haven NSW, thanks for the post OP stocked up.

  • I love K-mart fishing gear. I fish minimum once per week and if weather permits I take the boat out on weekends. While I have many rods and reels which were not purchased from K-mart, their hooks, sinkers and some lures are good quality and are usually much cheaper than other places even when not on special. With the amount of times I get caught on Australia and lose my rig, it all adds up… I will be checking out a K-Mart and I hope there is some left! Thanks OP

    QLD?

    • +9

Queensland (abbreviated as Qld) is the second-largest and third-most populous state in Australia. Situated in the north-east of the country, it is bordered by the Northern Territory, South Australia and New South Wales to the west, south-west and south respectively. To the east, Queensland is bordered by the Coral Sea and Pacific Ocean. Queensland has a population of 4,560,059, concentrated along the coast and particularly in the state's South East.

    • Went to Logan store. On clearance but they are exxy. $39 for 6''combo

  • Does anyone know if the reason for these clearances is to make room for their own branded fishing gear?

    • Read the above comments

All of a sudden I have become a fisherman. Thanks OP :)

Pls post pics of your 'Catch of the day'

  • Hi guys, I always wanted to start fishing and this looks like and amazing opportunity! :)

Any Kmart shops you guys know in NSW close to city who sells these stuff?

    • Broadway

  • Still plenty of gear on sale at Kmart Chadstone last night. Though not many standalone rods, a lot of cheap reels, heaps of $1.50 handreels, and loads of those $4 tackle boxes (replete with 150 pieces of tackle).

    Great find OP!

  • Just back from an extended weekend away to port Stephens… shame me I didn't get to the Kmart before I headed up so we splurged on a Shakespeare Slingshot Combo from one of the local tackle shops (got taken for a ride I'm sure) but we got set up with some 8lb line sand a basic tackle kit. Some nice locals made showed us the ropes and we had a great afternoon feeding the fish. We did lose a few hooks swivels and stinkers along the way.

Now can anyone recommend me the extras that I should snap up at Kmart if I get down there? We will probably fish from locally in Sydney (any spots recommended would be awesome) from jetties etc.

      • Thanks, I dropped into Kmart hours after getting the rod (1/9) and it was still on.

    • Thanks i will def have a look at the two sites!
