[HACK] How to Access SMH for Free on iPad / iPhone

Moved to Forum: Original Link

I was almost about to pony up the $22 for the digital subscription to Sydney Morning Herald until a friend pointed me to the website above, which showed me in about 4 steps, how to view unlimited articles on my ipad and iphone. There's no 'jailbreaking' or any of that trickery. Anyway I've been doing it for the week and it works flawlessly.

I'm not sure if it's a 'move it to the forum' thing, but it saved me $22/month, so it seems like a deal to me especially since my workplace only buys the Telegraph shudders.

Thought other people might like to know.

Hope it helps someone :)

  • Yeah, sorry this is more of a forum thing. Thanks for sharing though (if it works)

      Here are the steps

      1. Go to smh.com.au
      2. Click the arrow at the bottom of the screen and choose 'Add to Home Screen'. You'll now access SMH from there
      3. Go to Settings
      4. Press Safari
      5. Switch 'Private Browsing' on
      6. That's it. Enjoy!
  • UAfaker for jailbroken devices

  • awesome, appreciate this sharing ;)

  • +3

Because doing this is exactly the same as getting the iPad subscription. Umm… yeah.

  • +1

Well that's amazingly easy if it works, and there's nothing dishonest or doggy about it. Always a bonus. lol

  • +3

Alternatively just delete the SMH cookie once you reach the 30 article limit. Resets articles read back to zero.

    • or just view in an incognito window

    • Same thing with airfare, hotel bookings

  • +3

An alternative is the ABC news app; my personal favourite

    • Yep Both are about equally left leaning, often competing with each other.

LOL! Couldn't agree more. I wish someone would post a hack for 'The Australian' ;-)

Oh well, at least news.com.au is still free.

The thing is none of these papers are worth paying for. If I were going to pay that much for something it would have to have genuine reseach and reporting like (maybe) the Financial Times. All of these papers just post rubish from Wire services and American newspapers (complete with American spelling) and opinion pieces with some (usually) left wing idiot mouthing off politically correct cliches. If I want that I can just surf US websites or ask a Gen Y to talk to me for free!

        • Hack for the Australian as follows.
          1. Go to article you want to read
          2. Copy the web address
          3. Google the web address
          4. Click the google result and you have the full article

This may be limited to a certain number of articles per day.
Also may not work the first hour or so after the article goes up.

        • I do that and works for me everytime.

Use incognito in Chrome as well

  • +2

It belongs in the forums and worth sharing but its not a deal.

Like I can see free footy matches knowing where a hole in the fence is.

  • For android chrome users. I just change the settings to not accept any cookies.

SMB has the stupidest logic ever! Yes, let's leave the user's desktop to control this. LOL

  • This is great, thanks. I'm running iOS 7 on ipad and you can just turn on private browsing at bottom left corner when starting a new tab in Safari, works like a treat. Glad I'm not the only getting p*ssed off about that! who do they think they are? CNN has free news all the time with barely any ads, I hate smh. But unfortunately is about the only updated Sydney news accessible.

  • Glad to see it has helped a few people. Given it had 18 positive votes in 50 minutes I think it shouldn't really be demoted to the forums. If it helps people and saves them money, let them know :)

    • +4

First its not a demotion to the forums, its just another place to view and more appropriate.

Just like all free apps or software, its information that helps which there is absolutely no debate on this point. If it wasn't then it should be removed altogether.

Its the way the site works.

And votes have nothing to do with it. The other day a Flybuys post that was only available if you got an email direct to you got 150 plus votes, but since it was an invitation only deal it belongs in the forums. And it helped many who had got the email but missed the benefit as it was further down the email.

Like everything, if people only look at the main page, they miss a lot of benefits this site has, like forums and the wiki. But if everything was on the main page, then it would be information overload and deals would be missed as the clutter would overwhelm

      • -3

I appreciate what you've said, but it doesn't make sense to me. The site is clearly about users. Users submit 'bargains' and people vote with positive votes and clicks. If there are a lot of these (both for this and the fly buys bargain) then people and interested, appreciated and most importantly now informed of the way to get something cheaply ie a bargain.

It seems as though you've missed the point of what I thought was the best point of the site; people power— getting what they (not a random mod) want.

If it were not fir my friend telling me I'd have lost $100s per year. So I paid this forward. People were clearly appreciative and yet you demoted it. Do your users a favour and put it back up on the main page.

Love the site and the sharing of money saving tips :)

        • +3

Just to be clear I havent voted down your post.

To address a couple of your points.

Its a hack to save money, and yes we are scrooges who love to save money. But its a fine line on what is a bargain.

I know of ways where I can get access to TV shows from the US rather than wait for release here, and so on. Our forums discuss these.

But these are NOT bargains (as you also indicate 'bargains'). These are money saving tips.

BTW If the SMH wants people to have free access they would not have introduced the paywall, with limited access.

Just like someone deleting cookies to get 20 free samples, isnt a 'bargain'

But the site recognises that people want to share these, so its permitted in the forums.

Now if you disagree, which you are perfectly entitled to do, go to the forums, and discuss it. Change the system, but at least let others discuss it. Thats true democracy and sharing. Cheers

  • Ripper tune boris!

    Amazing and easy to do..

  • why is it moved to the forum?

    • Because it belongs here, it's not exactly a 'deal'

  • This is the new method I will be using but just so others know, there is another method.

You can load up the mobile site and click on a link. When the popup comes that you must pay to continue to read, toggle on desktop mode, the mobile site will continue to be displayed just without the pop up.

  • Now can someone suggest a hack for The Australian

  • +2

Ok here is the ultimate hack…

Walk to your local library and sign up fr a library card if you don't have one already.

Most library's have a digital subscription plan to magazines and newspapers.

There you go you now legally have access to most magazine and newspapers on your iPad for free.

    Thank me later.

    • Can you please let me know how this library card works

  • Thanks!

  • Anyone know the back for nytimes?

  • It's a good practise to clear your browser cookie and cache regularly.

For example, in Firefox you can enable: "Keep cookies until I close Firefox"

  • Why does this work only on iOS and not on my Desktop browser if I use private browsing mode there too?

  • +2

The print press has been so blatently anti labor ive decided to not read let alone pay to read its propaganda.

Oh im a liberal voter (honest) ive just hated the complete bias

  • If you pay for a digital subscription, does it cut down the ads? Or are the ads still the same whether you subscribe or not? I am not against paying for a subscription, but I don't want to pay and then still have ads everywhere!!

    • digital subscription = digital replica of printed paper = with ads :(

    • Have you ever paid for a printed newspaper and then found it still had ads ?
Same thing applies to online newspapers.

  • Having trouble accessing smh using methods above on iPhone
    Doesn't seem to work
