Most agree this is better at Network streaming of media files than the Apple TV and Roku. Has most of the useful apps like Hulu and Netflix. Also, some reports (e.g on UnblockUS) suggest that the current non-US WD TV cannot be configured to play Netflix, Hulu Plus, etc due to the lack of a 'DRM chip'. This is anyway slightly cheaper than Officerworks ($119)

The powersupply is 110-230v as per documentation on the US WD website.

  • Add the cost of an Aust-US AC converter plug and possible future warranty issues and it's just not worth it.

  • +1

It is worth it only if you want to be certain that the US apps work.

  • Can also get the WD TV Play for cheaper and still have most of the same features but no MPEG2, VOB and DTS etc.

  • so on top of the cost of the device do you further need to spend on a DNS/VPN blocking/masking services in addition to the the subscription fees for netflix/hulu or is that it?

  • Not worth it for the lack of warranty alone.

  • Has anybody got the pandora app to work on their aus device? Even though pandora is available here now, i cant get the app to show up. Ive heard its on the us version?

    • I have the Pandora app on my WD live streaming, but haven't used it as I don't have an account.
I use unblock-us for DNS masking.

      • I dont think you should need DNS masking coz pandora is legally available in Australia - Maybe ill try masking while it updates firmware the next time and see if that does it. Cheers for the info.

  • I have one of these. So temperamental. Handy, when it works.
Decides to turn itself of or restart at random times.

  • I have US-spec WDTV Live running through Un-block US, with Hulu and Netflix (and Pandora) streaming without problems. I did read that about the Australian model firmware not being right for Netflix etc, but couldn't be happier with the result

    • Yeah I have the Australian one and that's right.

    • I have the Australian model and I'm watching netflix without any problems

  • I'm new at this

I want an internet browser with this player?
    is it possible?

  • Another factor is that the Australian model comes with an ABC iView application that you probably won't get on the US version.

So if you want to stream local content from ABC this is no good.

  • I picked up one of these for $110 today from Harvey Norman after seeing JB's do it for $119. Just go in and ask for a deal, you could probably get even more off…
