eBay US$ cost estimates biased / help vendors sell

I love the PayPal app on Android, but only when using it did it become obvious that we are encouraged to think that what we're considering to buy is ~10% cheaper than it will cost us, if we let PayPal do the currency exchange.

Example: US$ 199.95 (AU$ 213.76)

In this case, PayPal debits AU$ 233.07

That's about AU$ 20 -more- than we expected.

Since eBay & PayPal merged, it is not unreasonable to expect & get much better estimates of our Aussie $'s buying power than we're provided - by eBay - today.

perhaps our nearest Consumer Affairs or even ACCC can pull eBay's chain to get this fixed…?

Ohhh thats sneaky! I have my 28 degrees card hooked up to my paypal and just pay in the local currency. Paypal is a terribly expensive service.

    • I second this. I've got my paypal set to debit AUD instead of using their conversion rates and have always been a lot better off this way.

  • (Just hear me out…)Paypal actually have to make money. Thats how they pay the staff and internet and website costs. To do this they charge a 3% transaction fee. Now in all the many years that I have being using ebay/paypal there was only one occasion where I was charged the 3% instead of the vendor absorbing the price. I contacted the vendour and complained and they did nothing, it wasn't until I gave them negative feedback that they offered to refund me some money if I changed the feedback. Of course I agreed. But really it should not have come to this, and as I said it has only happened once. Give them a neg feedback. Goodluck.

  • Rusty it monopoly money. They're gouging because they can, no different to how ebay keeps increasing their fees.

In Europe and the US there are strong alternatives.

I rem reading an article that Australia( I dont rem which agency said this) want to institute an alternative.

    • This shows how easy it is for spammers to make accounts.

      • And gone within minutes…

Actually, the majority of SPAM accounts get blocked automatically but obviously it's not fool proof. Just keep hitting report.
