OK good deal but what type of drive inside? Green, Blue, Black? Standard SATA or like the latest portable customized connector?

  • Cheap with 3 year warranty. Can the drive be removed?
    Shame not USB 3.0

    • Drive can't be removed as it voids the warranty sorry

      • Of course we know but too many ozbargainers did that :p

      • +2

        That doesn't answer the question.

        • I think REP/store wouldn't say "yeah, remove the drive as you pleased!" :-P

      • The cost to ship a WD drive to their RMA facility in Singapore (lets say in the final 2 years of its 3 years warranty as first year can be returned to seller) will not be worth the cost of a new drive. (~40 AUD with AusPOST).

        Ridiculous.

    • You can definitely remove the drive, however I think it will void the warranty. If the drive continues to work just fine as an internal drive, I guess who cares then.

  • Does this require an external power source or can it be powered USB only? Looks like an AC required

    • Desktop 3.5" so requires external power supply.
Shame its only USB 2.0 but still good for the price with shipping included.

    • +1

      external power source required

  • Looks like pretty sharp pricing with free shipping!

    • 3.5" = external power

      • oops replied to the wrong person

  • Rep, can you please do a deal with a USB powered one not AC? Thanks for your consideration!

got 1 $1.49 paypal fee can these be cracked open and used as internals ????

    • Yep, gonna bust it into my Apple TV.

    • I've pulled apart many hard drives (not a 3tb one though).

There were all standard sata drives with a low RPM.

    • PayPal fee?

  • Anyone know if this is Fat32 or NTFS? I bought a drive a few weeks ago, but it wont work on the tv. I want to get one to hook up to my samsung tv, but think my tv only reads Fat32.
    Thanks

    • +5

You can always format it :)

      • FAT32 cannot do 3TB.

        • +1

yes it can… use FAT32_GUIFORMATTER.EXE download for windows.

EDIT: works a treat on my PS3, theoretically it might store about 400 games

ordered 1 for me and 1 for my daughter.. she will be adding hers to my N40L NAS so we have 6x3TB storage :)

        • true… if using 512 bytes per sector. Drive and OS supporting 4096 bytes per sector can address up to 4096*2^32 (>17) TB.

        • +2

"ordered 1 for me and 1 for my daughter.. she will be adding hers to my N40L NAS so we have 6x3TB storage :)"

Are you sub-contracting to the NSA?

    • some tv's (all the ones i know personally…. tho that isnt very many admittedly) will only take up to 1tb drive. have you checked yours can take a drive bigger than that?

      • thanks all, interesting, sounds like I have a couple options to try with the existing drive, including giving up on a single hard rive option.
        Cheers

  • Seems like a very good deal at this price.

  • +1

Thanks bought 1. Damn…now I have 4x 3TB drives!!! Will resist next time.

    • Did you open it up? What kind of drive inside?

      • +1

Dunno, just ordered like 5 mins ago :-)

      • +1

        my guess,

        • WD Green/5400 RPM. Has issues with spindown/spinup idling wearing out the motor quicker than normal HDD

        reviews here

        http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136…

a whooping 32% on failure rate, another 8% on 2 star ratings, with a combined total of 40% on negatives.

WD blues and blacks are safer choice for everyday use IMO, greens are being reduced to clear

Remember to disable idle time if it's even possible.

        gl all

        • +6

Yes but how many people have the drives and they just work and they've never felt the need to post a review. These review's are generally skewed with people with bad or amazing experiences not your average Joe who don't think to post a review. I would say that the failure rate is closer to 3% than 30 some %

        • I've had 8each 3th green drives (4 active in media pc a 4 backup in a nas) for over 2 years now and no issues. I agree it is the type of thing you wouldn't generally bother to post a review about unless you had an issue.

        • Guess it depends on the batch. I've had both Greens go on me. PCB burns out, a common problem:
          http://datacent.com/datarecovery/hdd/western_digital/WD2500B…

      • i've opened up a few wd drives in my time (not a 3tb though).

They've all been low RPM sata drives. So most likely a 5400 green.

  • Not thrilled about the Paypal fee but still a good deal.
    Thanks.

  • +1

Why won't you ship to my PO Box?

    • probably they use courier, a lot of shops does not ship to PO BOX…..

  • I aint paying credit card fees stuff that!

    • Your choice, but its an added cost for the seller so i think its OK when its a good offer!

    • +1

It literally puts the price from $99 to $100.98. If you cannot afford an extra $1.98, you cannot afford ANY type of drive, even without fees.

    • yeah. credit card fees are a joke.

  • +1

    These are green drives.

You can also open these fairly easily and there are no warranty stickers, so you should be able to pull it apart without any obvious damage to keep the warranty (not that I condone it!)

  • harvey norman had 2tb for $79 so idont see how this is a good deal………

    • +4

      Umm this is 3tb

      • realised that once i pressed the post button!

  • +1

    usb 2.0…..errrr

  • USB2? 2 months until 2014. I mean I dunno :/

    • Pretty sure the only buyers are ones that are gonna open it, having said that I recall the USB 3 Seagate 3tb's for $106 from OW were higher rpm than the green drives that will be in these.

  • almost down the auspost $30 per TB. getting serious now.

    • +2

Hoping 4TB will drop to around $120 by xmas with the AUD getting stronger again. Fingers crossed.

      • the 4TB cheapest was USD$129.99 + shipping before the Australian dollar sink to bottom!

  • Thanks~ Great deal and ordered 1!
Can't wait to see what other deals OP post next :)

  • +1

Man this deal so tempting. But I'll wait for the usb 3.0 cuz once you know how fast usb 3.0 is..

    • -2

10x faster, so if you've got a HDD using USB 2.0 at 100mb/s you should take it out of it's case, put it in the USB 3.0 case and then you'll get 1GB/s bandwidth! thats faster than an SSD!!!

  • I wish i didn't buy the 4TB Seagate for $170 now, the seagate drives suck compared to the WD Elements (despite the USB3 vs USB2 difference, i only use it for media so speed is not too important)

  • Great deal. Just bought a couple for $120 not long ago.

  • +1

Great deal! Rep can you post a deal for 4TB drives too? A lot of ozbargainers are heavyweight consumers of storage.

  • +1

    I got one thanks, primarily because I don't actually have any USB3 computers…sad really…

  • thanks op ordered one. gonna use with my router. it only supports usb 2.0 .

  • +2

The failure rate of all hard drives is 100%.
    Why even bother?

    • Huh?

      • Huh?

i think you will find the failure rate on ALL hard drives is 100%… the only thing that changes is things like what sort of life they have had…… and how many hours/days/weeks/decades/centuries they have run for :)

        • And so are all modern electronics, so whats the point? Its like saying all milk goes off. We all know milk has a use by date. Kind of a redundant statement really :)

I guess i was referring to the why bother?

        • +2

i think they were taking the piss… caus usually on any HDD deal inevitably a stack of idiots people say "dont buy this drive caus i had one fail" etc…..

        • Yes exactly!

  • hoping to get more great deal from you guys!!!!! :-)

  • I ordered one of these and it arrived promptly.

I was a bit concerned about the box it was delivered in as it was quite a large box with very little padding inside to protect the box of the HDD which was moving around quite freely inside the larger box.

If anyone wants to know the actual disk drive it is one of these:

    WD30EZRX-00DC0B0

with less than Stella reviews here:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=22-136-874&S…

I guess time will tell. My current 500GH disk is WD green and has lasted 8 years and is still going strong. I hope their quality hasn't slipped.
