Anyone seen a Blackberry Q5 in the flesh?

Hi guys,

Trying to find somewhere to try a Blackberry Q5 before I make a move on the Q10.
For health reasons i need a physical keyboard yesterday, lol.

I'm trying to do my best to wait on Unique Mobiles to reduce the Q10 cost, but if I could try a Q5 maybe it'll do.

Anyone seen one? Or seen a very cheap Q10?

  • Blackberry the company is in all sorts of trouble.
    Buyers beware.

    • Ninjastud we know that but try using a touch phone when your hand/fingers are unsteady, I have a z10 but would love to swap it for a q10.

  • Have used Q5 and q10 and various others. I actually preferred the q5 as i have fat fingers.

The advantage of the q5 is the keys are spaced apart, and if you compare the previous curve and bold you will see what i mean. For some the keys separated is an advantage. I must admit i prefer the look of the q10 i believe its got a bigger battery than q5 and z10.

  • Q5 has 80mah more battery, but its non-removable.
Both have 2000mah 'extend cases' available on ebay.

I tend to prefer bunched keys, I love my E72\E63 the most of any phone. I hate landscape slider keyboards, I'd prefer onscreen to that.

but the Q5 keyboard seems quite nice, its still small and portrait, just spaced letters.

The chiclets look smaller, as opposed to futher appart (think apple computer keyboard, vs normal).

and Ninjastud, it doesnt matter. The OS is one release from bug free IMO, i've played with it a lot. and since it can sideload android 4.* apps, I don't care about app support either.

All I know is that my eyes are failing at an epic rate, and onscreen keyboards are impossible to use without migraines (as you cant touch type).

Ive tried a Q10 and it was the 2nd most natural phone to use ever, from keyboard to OS, the only thing that beat it was my E63; but all the new feature phones lack a LED flashlight (bad eyes, light needed for normal daily tasks).

I'd consider a BlackberryTorch but no one offers a BIS anymore.

Honestly, if blackberry had of stuck to their roots and used their keyboard as a point of difference, rather than releasing the Z10 first, I think things woulda gone very differently. The Z10 had no point of difference. They didnt even advertise the Android sideload.

Anyway. Look out for a super cheap Q10, or a physical Q5 for me to try please? I'm kinda desperate. This Galaxy Note is horrible.

  • How am I best to request deals, or even the possibility of deals (even if its 'nope') from a REP?
I'd like to ask UniqueMobiles, as Mobiciti already told me no.

  • Now the founders want to buy the company. What the heck is happening with Blackberry.
Smartphone market will eventually get saturated and stabilize. Where is the scope for the company?

  • Or seen a very cheap Q10?

i like your determination/persistence - i've ended up buying a nearly new nokia e6 for <$80 in the meantime :)

    • Where did you find an E6 for that cheap? that (the shopping) link is dead :(

Well since i spend thousands a month on eye surgery to keep some vision, I dont like the idea of spending 500+ on a phone. So yeah, a deal is needed for me to feel comfortable.

I wont give up. All reports say sales numbers were beyond woeful, so companies must be sitting on stock.

re: the scope of the company; they made a bunch of mistakes.

      1. They used the 'Blackberry' name directly.
They shoulda come up with a new Buzzword: By Blackberry. So that people who had been bitten by the old BIS requirements etc. didnt associate them negatively instantly.

      2. The didnt advertise the Android Emulation.
If they'd let people know they can load android apps (even if they admitted it was tricky) they'd have had people less dissapointed by 'lack of apps'.

      3. Released the Q series before the Z.
The QWERTY keyboard was their point of difference. Why would you launch on a market (that is, 100% touchscreen) thats already saturated, AND has big names that dominate already?
Their OS, imo, IS STABLE enough, and different enough to survive on its own merit, but they needed to give people a reason to try them to begin with. Keyboard was it.

Still, no excuses for shitty marketing; the product still rocks.

      • Where did you find an E6 for that cheap?

        ebay - where else? :)

        also perhaps watch gumtree

  • makes sense. Damn, I hoped there was cheap ones somewhere. I'd use one of those for another year or so.

The only fault my E72 had was the browser force closing when RAM filled up, with 256mb instead of 128, that should be all good :D

    still want my blackberry though…..

  • Any shops have a Q5, even an import, in stock? I'm in QLD.

  • OK, so now I've seen video of one opened up, and am relieved to see it DOES have a user replaceable battery, you just need to use a guitar pick to unclip the back case.

I didnt want to change it daily, I wanted it to be an option for 2 years later, when charge hold starts to wain.
Only thing I'm wondering is if it has the same battery as the Q10.
