Sonos Play: 5 AND Bridge for TOTAL $522.50 -Sony Store Robina Gold Coast

60

Just picked up a sweet sounding Sonos Play 5 system WITH bridge for TOTAL $522.50!! These things never go on sale and the closest JB/HN could do was $539 and that was pushing it. I'm a really good customer at this Sony store so they gave it to me at "cost price" as a favour :).

I know that none of you would ever contemplate paying full RRP but it's usually $679 for the Sonos Play 5 alone and another $89 for the bridge. Total $768. That's a saving of $143.50!! Just find Andrew (or Luke) and tell them that you're a friend of Phil- the guy who recently bought a few Sony TVs and this Sonos.
Sorry for the guys not on the GC however it may help you for other places. Good luck!

Warning. The Sonos system really is seriously addictive. I'm thinking of going back to buy another Play 5 or even a soundbar!

I hear nothing but great things about Sonos systems, but they're so pricey! Can you expand on your experience with them Phil? What makes them so great?

I have a play 3 and it's pretty impressive. The only let down is that there's no other input method for audio other than streaming via wifi and Ethernet. If you're really into music and want top quality audio then these area definitely something to consider.

      • +2

Yeah, you'll need a 'Connect' if you want Ins & Outs etc. They used to be called ZonePlayers before the new naming convention kicked in a few years ago. They need to be connected to Speakers and some even need to be connected to Amps and Speakers however they offer the best flexibility. I can play an LP on my Turntable in the LoungeRoom and feed it back through the SONOS system into any other room in the house or even ALL zones if I want. Same goes for other areas… I can push the Living Room TV or Study PC audio back through the system so it can be heard elsewhere.

I LOVE SONOS and have no problem with its sound quality however in the scheme of things it isn't actually "top quality audio" but can be with add-on DACs or heavy modification… but to be honest that's getting into Audiophile territory where line between quality & 'wank' starts getting pretty blurred.

90-95% of us will be 100% satisfied with the SQ from SONOS equipment.

          Haha. So true.

Great link :) So true though.

I have a large collection of Speakers & Amps, some quite rare & valuable but it never ceases to amaze me how much 'wank' is involved in audio. Sure, my good speakers sound great BUT they're also worth a small fortune. I also have some generic Chinese built speakers that sound just as amazing 95% of the time but are worth about a TENTH of the value.

Same goes for speaker wire… don't waste your money on branded stuff, make your own from extension cables or even computer network cable! Google it… this works just as well and unless you have a completely silent listening space and a multi-million dollar sound lab built-into your head you're not going to be able to tell the difference.

Don't believe the hype, only believe your ears!

Their sound quality is definitely good, not sure about great. However, for a proprietary ecosystem, Sonos is GREAT. I have a Connect:Amp with my own outdoor speakers and it works flawlessly.

  • They go up and down in price like a yoyo. Was lucky to buy mine before the price hike mid-year for $500 for the Play 5 & Bridge @ JB HIFI.

  • I have squeezebox sysyem at home. how is sonos compared to squeezebox

    • +2

Apart from the fact that Squeezebox was discontinued about 12 months ago… not a lot but SONOS did offer that little bit extra flexibility which may/may not matter to some.

SONOS works on its own proprietary network (hence the need for the Bridge) and although I'm a big hater of proprietary stuff SONOS have done this very well for a very good reason and in fact during normal use you wouldn't even know. It keeps the SONOS network completely separate to your normal network which really kicks in when relying on running your SONOS mesh wirelessly. The SONOS devices communicate with each other on their own dedicated wireless network keeping your Wifi free for other things. One or two SONOS devices probably wouldn't make much of an impact but several SONOS devices playing different music simultaneously could work your Wifi hard but as it's on its own network then it really doesn't matter.

      • depends if its uncompressing before sending over the wifi or not

I've been a SONOS addict since 2007 and although a big risk to initially invest as much as I did on a relatively new & unknown brand/product I'm SO glad I did because it has worked out very very well. I have around a dozen SONOS zones but need to buy a few more to completely fill the house ;)

This deal is very good value for money for a local supplier however apart from the initial two ZonePlayers I purchased from a local Hifi shop (remember them?) for an enormous $2000 I've been buying my SONOS gear direct from the US via eBay and saving a fortune in the process. The Aussie distributors will tell you that it wont work but they're just protecting their profits. The US stuff works perfectly and apart from a repair on a Zone Player I forgot to switch over to 240V (dumbass!) it has all worked out of the box and for many years. SONOS were good enough to cover my silly mistake under warranty repair however I had to pay for the return shipping but I was still way in front so I wasn't too worried.

The cheapest Play:5 I can find from a reputable reseller on eBay is currently just under AU$470 shipped (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Sonos-PLAY-5-Black-BRAND-NEW-FACT…) and that's without the Bridge so yes, this deal is pretty much about the same value as the Bridges can be had for around $50-$100. They also give Bridges away during promotions and they seem to be used for bargaining deals for people wanting to get started with SONOS so I don't think they're really worth much from a SONOS/reseller perspective.

If you have any questions then please ask and I'll try to answer them as best I can but it really is the only true multizone system available IMO and so easy to setup & use it's crazy.

    • Time to get Humidity Resistant Play 1. :)

Hey guys. I've only had the Sonos Play 5 for 24h and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I'm usually into high end stuff (full Denon and JBL setup at home) but I am very impressed with the Sonos. You can't really compare to floors standing speakers with amp but the Sonos really packs a punch for it's size and price. Great clarity and it easily fills the room.

The best part though is the combined experience. I don't know how to describe it but the app makes a world of difference. I listen with my high end gear when I'm into serious listening but the Sonos is just so much fun. You'll see what I mean if you get it.

My advice is to get the Play: 5 over the Play: 3. It's worth the extra cash. Plus there's an audio in and out and two ethernet ports. The sound is definitely more spacious.

I'm actually thinking of getting another Play:5 to make it into a stereo pair when I need to!!

    • +1 to the added flexibility SONOS offers your music collection! I have around 21,000 fully legit tracks in my collection (yeah, silly me for buying all my music eh?) and the SONOS makes it so easy to explore. There'd be many albums and tracks I just wouldn't ever listen to if it wasn't for the SONOS!

The SONOS has also changed the way we have parties too! Our regular guests already have the SONOS app installed on their phones so when they come over they can instantly start adding their favourite tracks to the queue and everyones happy! Only problem with this is that the guests also have control over skipping & volume so after a few drinks things can start getting a bit out of control ;) I posted a thread on the SONOS forum a few years ago to get them to make separate 'Admin' & 'User' type interfaces to combat this and although many others thought it was a good idea the SONOS people dont seem to think so.

  • Ps. The Sonos was cheaper last year but I am hard pressed to find a shop willing to go lower than $550 in Australia this year after the silly price hike.

Just fyi, if people are planning to use this with their TV and create a 5.1 setup with multiple SONOS speakers. SONOS devices currently do not support DTS audio streams, so a lot of blurays don't work i believe.

I'd be buying these in a heartbeat if they could!

    • +1

Good advice Helios. I only really use mine for music but know that SONOS are trying to cover more ground by offering 5.1 capabilities.

To be honest though, building a full 5.1 system from SONOS components (5 x Play:3 + Sub) will set you back around $2500-$3000 and for that money (and IMO) you'd be far better off investing in a traditional Home Theatre system and just get a SONOS Connect for music etc.

  • can try and price match with this link - (bricks and mortar in Melbourne)
    http://www.lifestyleconnect.com.au/SoundVision/Sonos/sonosst…
    play 3 - 399
    play 5 - 569
not quite as good as this post - but better than most

    good luck :P
most places will negotiate if you are buying a system…

    • No Play 1 yet… :(

  • According to the sonos Au site you currently get a Free Bridge with the Play 1, 3 or 5
unfortunately they decided to tack on $100 aussie tax to the new Play 1 :(
