$79 Vodafone Huawei G300+ Prepaid Mobile Phone @DSE (Save $20)

170

The best value 4" (800x480) Android smart phone on the market for those wanting more usability than the bargain basement low-res $39.50 3.5" Huawei Y201.

This is a 850/900/2100Mhz G300+ model. The G300+'s 900Mhz giving dual-band 3G on Optus. Though worth noting that the usual G300 bootloader unlocks to allow for a custom G300 ROM to be installed have been reported to brick the phone. That may still be possible by using an official bootloader unlock code from Huawei.

Alternatively there is still stock of Vodafone Huawei G300 floating around at OW/Target/BigW, though it's only a 850/2100Mhz 3G capable. Those units allowing effortless user modded ROM installation.

  • 3G UMTS: 850, 2100 MHz with 7.2Mbps data. G300+ model includes 900Mhz too - good for Optus.

  • Submit IMEI to Vodafone. Often they'll return the unlock code within 4 days for free.
  • Do a free self-unlock
  • Seek bagman's services who can unlock it for $5 here giving up to 48hrs turnaround.

Why is this better value than the Y300 you posted the other day? http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/118941

This has a smaller battery, single core processor, no front camera. Other than the benefits to Optus users this seems to be not as good value as the Y300.

Yeah Y300 is better and I am waiting for Coles to have it for under $50 plus flybuys :)

    • Y300 is definately better than G300 or G300+

      However G300+ supports UMTS 900

Personaly the only let down of Y300 is 512 RAM
But again what else you can expect from a sub $100 phone? :)

    • How do the two phones perform : dual core + android 4.1 v single core + android 2.3 though?. I know these are both budget phones , but im curious whether Y300 is a bit laggier

    • Total outlay = $79 for G300+ versus $99 for Y300 (inc $30 Telstra prepaid). Both have 512MB RAM, the limiting factor for performance.

Y300 is better value if you want it's additional dual-core CPU, front camera, JB 4.1, slightly larger battery and $30 Telstra recharge. Those features costing an extra $20 over a G300+. G300+ is better value if want a cheaper total outlay and 900Mhz UMTS for dual-band 3G on the Optus network.

  • Got 3 from kmart, Dicksmith and vodafone last month when my family visited me. All factory unlocked… still 2.3 and no 4.x available until now

    • Please read the description, you can download the 4.04 from Huawei site.

I bought this phone when it was on special a few months ago as a secondary phone for travelling. It's nothing special, but does the job ok. The capacitative screen is something I wish I had know about (I bought it because it was cheap).

It's a good deal for a phone, so won't neg it, but just because its $79, don't rush out and buy it - look for an alternative, even if you spend a little more.

    • So what is wrong with the capacitive screen?

  • cant be too bad. My missus, who is a noted phone whinger, likes hers

  • This phone is actually really good. My technologically challenged Mum just got one, and she loves it. Submitted the IMEI code on the Voda website to unlock it, and it came back with a code immediately :)

  • Got one. It's good.
