Sony LCD TV spare part

Hi Bargainers,

I was really hoping I could get some help/opinion.

I bought a Sony Bravia KDL46HX820 year and a half ago(it was one of the best then). Now it is broken and LED light blinks three times. Looking up on a different forum it states that the main power supply is faulty. The part number is 1-474-307-11 or 147430711. Another model NX720 has the same part number. Looking on the internet the part is available in US ($70 plus $50 shipping). The seller accepts the return but charges 30% restocking fee and the buyer pays the return postage. If the part is faulty I will be ($100 shipping plus restocking fee) out of pocket. I tried to look up for the part in australia and could not find a sony spare parts shop in australia. I was wondering if anyone knows of a place where I can buy this part.

Thanks in advance

You probably need to find a Sony Authorised Service Centre. There are a few around Melbourne, unfortunately the Sony website doesn't help you find one easily. Give them a ring on 1300 137669 and ask them.

If you know that is the part you need, it is probably available through Sony's (and other brands) spare part distributor Speedy Spares (Kensington). I think they only do mail order now, they used to have a walk-in counter. I highly doubt anyone will do returns on electronic parts.

Being that it is a high-end TV and is only 6 months out of warranty, current consumer law would suggest it is still under warranty, despite the warranty period stated by manufacturers. Essentially you need to ask yourself, do you expect this product (considering it is top-of-the-line and its price) to last longer than 12 months? Is it reasonable to expect it to work for say 3-5 years or more? If so, it should still be covered under warranty. http://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/consumer-rights-guarantees/…

    • Thanks endotherm. This was exactly my argument to Jb HiFi and sony helpline. If I had paid $2700 for a TV I expect it to last longer than 16 months. I have already filed a complaint with consumer affairs. It has been a while and I am just waiting for their reply, I guess they are busy and have lots of consumers complaining about their SONY TVs (I know they deal with all probs, just kidding). I called Speedy repairs after seeing ur reply (thanks). They gave me a quote for $137 and as u said it is a special order which will take around 3-5 days and they wont accept returns. I might wait for consumer affairs to attend to my issue and hope that I get a reasonable outcome. will keep you all posted

      • If the original warranty was 12 months (seems a little short???) and the tv is 16 months old now and you bought the tv with a gold, platinum or diamond credit card - you have an extra 12 months warranty included through your credit card…original receipt is best, but the credit card provider may work through the purchase on your statement etc. The insurance is done via Zurich insurance…it's not too hard to claim.

        • 12 months is what sony provides. I bought it with my mastercard so I guess I am not covered by the insurance thing… any idea?

        • The credit card thing is an alternative course of action. In my opinion it is not necessary as there is a statutory warranty in effect, i.e. a law which compels the manufacturer to warranty the goods despite the period they mention. Have a read of this thread too: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/120061.

        • Sony are terrible in this regard.

You may have the law on your side, but Sony will not back down, they know the majority of people will not take them to court to enforce their consumer rights. Not very ethical but saves them millions from not having to repair the crap they sell these days.

Providing the problem wasn't caused by misuse/accident, then the product defect you describe is covered by Consumer Guarantees (CG) under Australian Consumer Law.

      • Thanks Bug,

still waiting for someone from consumer affairs to investigate my complaint and make a decision.
        will keep everybody posted.

        thanks

  • Why on earth would you want to even attempt to fix this yourself? If it was bought new not long ago, warranty should cover it (unless it's faulty due to neglect)…Most manufacturers these days minimise the warranty period to 12 mths so that retailers can potentially sting consumers with extended warranty…But, like endotherm says, you have your consumer rights and can argue that a new tv should last longer that the 1 year warranty period. Maybe call the SONY Service Centre first.

      Hi Siu,

Sony customer care is pain to deal with. They all sound so ROBOTIC and give you general troubleshooting instructions. I had already tried everything from other forums and their website before I called them and was expecting something better from the so called TRAINED PROFESSIONALS…. As suggested by u and endo, I will wait for consumer affairs to intervene and sort it out for me. Luckily I kept the receipt…..

      Thanks for your help

  • I had the same Sony TV and it was 15 months old and 3 months out of warranty .It started to switch off by itself and blink four times . I got quoted $1900 to replace the panel but after telephoning Sony a number of times they replaced it with the newer w900A. As it was cheaper for them to replace it.But you need to get a Sony Authorised repairer to check the TV first.
Under Statutory warranty an expensive TV should last a number of years but its a case by case basis.

    • Thanks frill,

hopefully I get a new W900a. i went to jb hifi and it looks awesome. what r ur thoughts about the new one? any better than HX820?

      • The TV picture is similar to the HX820 but you get more IPTV applications. Sony might not give you a new TV if the HX820 can be fixed with minor repairs .

  • Just an update guys, Sony Tech is coming over on monday to have a look at the TV. Consumer Affairs contacted sony and they called me. Also they wanted me to pay for visiting charges for the technician (which sony said would be between $80-$250) to which I refused and they have agreed to waive it off. Lets see what the tech advises.

  • Hi,

Sony tech came over and he said that it needs a new panel which they have to order from Sony. He said the panel will come from overseas(Japan I guess) and would take around 6 weeks. He also briefly mentioned that most probably it will be cracked (in transit) and then I can negotiate with Sony to give me a new TV. Lets see how it goes.

    Cheers

    • It's more likely that they'll order the wrong panel than it getting damaged in transit (they must have worked out how to ship fragile electronics by now or they'd be out of business).

If the panel needs replacing after 16 months, then it was either defective/faulty or has been damaged by other faulty components or workmanship.

    • Don't wait 6 weeks for the panel . Phone Sony customer repair centre next week and tell them what is the situation as they might give you a new Tv as it would be cheaper for them.
Don't rely on Sony tech advice as his company is just a sub contractor and Sony will make the decision whether to replace or repair. As Sony told me when they replaced my Tv that there are no more parts for the KDLHX820 model. I do not know if that is true but i did not question it as I got a new TV.

  • I called sony today and they confirmed that the panel is no longer available as the TV is obsolete (surprised). The call centre agent advised me that someone from sony customer resolutions will call me to discuss my options (which I guess is to discuss/ negotiate the model of new TV they have to offer me). Any suggestions what model should I have in mind while discussing. As Chaff said in his post, he recd W900a, sony might offer me that….

    • Technically they could offer you a W800A because both have the same Video Processing technology (X-Reality PRO & Motionflow XR 400 (100Hz)).

But the HX820 seems to have a better panel (marketed as "OptiContrast Panel" - CORNING Gorilla Glass Panel) than the W800A. The W900A also has an enhanced panel marketed as "TRILUMINOS Display".

I don't know how the "OptiContrast Panel" and "TRILUMINOS Display" compare in real life, but I'd be insisting on a W900A.

Here's the archived specs for your KDL46HX820…
      http://www.sony.com.au/product/kdl-46hx820/specs

  • Sony customer relations called and offered KDL46W900a. I agreed to it and the agent advised me that she will place the order which will be shipped from overseas and can take upto 10 business days…. (christ I have been without a TV for more than 3 months) but glad that i will get a new TV (hopefully better than HX820).

@bug: I would not have accepted the W800 as it is only 100Hz while HX820 was 200Hz. The company has to offer similar product to what the customer has. If similar product is not available then they have to offer a better product. Also I would think that sony would not want to stuff up anymore as consumer affairs is involved. If I dont agree to Sony's offer and go back to consumer affairs then I believe that sony gets fined and then they will offer me a better product. So I think the company tries to give what the cust asks (as long as it is reasonable). They would not have given me a 55 inch W900 coz it is obviously not justified for me to ask for. As for 46W900a my argument would be been around Hz. I know that W900 has 800 motion pro while HX820 had 400 but its too bad that sony does not have a model with 400 motionpro. But in the end the good thing is I am getting a NEW TV…….
thanks for all ur help guys

    • Like a true Ozbargainer don't forget to ask them to send you an email or letter stating when you received the new TV so you get get another 12 warranty on the new TV.
Its surprising that Sony does not have parts for TVs that less than a year and half old. I thought companies should by law maintain parts for repairs for certain number of years. I was able to get parts for my old philips Tv for 10 years.

  • Thank Chaf. I think that non availability of parts has actually worked in our (me and u) favour this time coz if the parts were available we wont get the new TV…. (sure we had to go through a bit of rough patch) but in the end we get new and better TV. I will ask them to provide something in writing stating the warranty of the new TV. Also did u try to fix the old/faulty TV urself or did sony take it back? hope we can fix it ourselves and we have 2 TVs (just being greedy,….. ;-)

  • I agree it was in our favour that there was no parts avaliable. In fact if we took out extended warranty i doubt the repairing company would be so kind to give us a better TV than the orginal.
Sony said that they would take back the old Sony TV but as yet after several months they still have not picked it up.
I thought of fixing it but as I said i was quoted $1550 for the LCD panel plus $300 labour . So the repair will cost more than if i I bought a brand new TV. If you wish to fixed it yourself the LCD panel part no is A1808283A.
It seems that its common problem with HX820 series so look at this forum maybe they can help you
    http://www.avsforum.com/t/1479247/sony-kdl-55hx820-repair-ad….
If you can fix it for $100 or $200 as you had stated at the beginning of the thread maybe i can fix mine as well. So tell us how you go.

    • I thought that it would be the Main board or the power board which was around $80 but if it is the panel (as u said) then I dont think it would be beneficial to fix it. Also I looked up the part number on sony website and it is no longer available…. So I guess I would probably leave the idea of fixing it and enjoy the new W900a. Thanks for all ur help.

  • do you get to keep the old TV?

    ebay it.

    • Sony hasn't said anything about taking it back and I dont think they will as it is just a waste for them. I might sell it on ebay. Thanks for the idea/suggestion

  • I had the same problem with the KDL46HX820. The LED light would blink 4 times - the fault was the same as described above. Sony didn't have the part to fix it (the TV is only last years model!). TV was something like 18 months old. They were very reluctant to fix under warranty (it depends who you talk to at the NZ call centre, the answers can vary). But you have Australian Consumer Law on your side. But be polite and leave that ace up your sleeve until you need to use it. Sony do have a 3-month 'grace period' so it would be less hassle if your TV breaks down in that period. Long story short, it's been 3-4 weeks without a TV and Sony finally called up and offered the KDL55W900a as a replacement (KDL46W900a is out of stock until February). So as I predicted since day one (thanks to this forum thread) we end up getting a new TV. It won't arrive until new year though, unless there is some way of hurrying it up. They're sending it from their Sydney warehouse. Seriously, all TV's by law should have a 3-year warranty. The way Sony finally agreed to repair/replace it under warranty as if they were doing us a favour was ridiculous, when really, they were just adhering to the law.

I would actually make a complaint to Sony,

if indeed you bought the TV through an appropriate agent and have a proof of purchase your right as a consumer when buying a product,

is to get reasonable use from the product. a TV power supply that only last 18 months is not acceptable even after the warranty period is over, one would assume with standard conditions and use that the TV should last more than it has.

you are well within your right to complain.

I had a similar thing happen to a Panasonic TV I bought a while ago.. and negotiated a 50/50 split on the cost of repair on parts and labour and they looked after the pick up and delivery of the TV once repaired..

needless to say it only cosy $150 with a warranty on the repair from an authorised agent. and shipping was free.

doesn't seem like you got fair use from your TV… I would complain.

    • If you read the comments, you'll notice that the OP did complain and got a brand new KDL46W900a (2013 model) as a replacement…

    • I'm not sure if you were referring to my comment or OPs or a combination? Either way, we both complained to Sony and got a new TV out of it, as already mentioned.
