  • Those prices to Toyko are unbelievable!

Heads up also..Jetstar's 5th Birthday sale begins in around 1 weeks time. Hearing about a good tiger sale coming up also, possibly this Friday.

  • Hi Fenn, this is kinda unrelated to the deal but would it be possible to search for departing flights by state? Like if I were to search for QLD to Sydney or something it'd show flights departing from both BNE and OOL? Often one airport will be significantly cheaper than the other but it's tricky to know which one. In the end it just takes me a bit of time to search both but it'd be awesome if you could add the functionality in.

    • Hi Rigby,

Cheers for the feedback! And yes, that's a fantastic idea - Also great for tourists if they want to visit tasmania (for example) but don't know the airport options.

      I'll look into it :)

      Cheers!

      Fenn.

  • i could find a jetsaver flight (incl. baggage) $199 sydney to tokyo.

  • p.s all of these prices exclude taxes and fees.

      Hi aloha,

As far as I can see, the advertised prices are including taxes/fees. Can you point us in the direction that made you think otherwise?

      Thanks!

      • whoops, it looks like you were right.

it's confusing because they don't include taxes/fares when you start to search for a fare on jetstar.com, yet include them when they have promotions.

    • ah thanks.

i have been wondering why i dont just go tto tokyo for teh weekend?

      what is the 'catch' here?

that the return prices are normal price?

      • Return prices are the same as long as you're flying back in the travel period. Taxes are actually cheaper on the return leg I think for Japan! Only real "catch" is that carry on luggage isn't included.. but it's only $20 each way to add it in.

      • No catch, its just that bookings are down across all airlines and this part of the year is very off peak. They probably just want to fill seats.

  • you're a legend mateee!!! Jakarta for my long weekenddd only about $150 return!! :)

  • thanks for your posts, but why do these deals always exclude July X[

I've been to Japan three times in the last five years. Twice with Jetstar, the first with Qantas. I will always fly Jetstar from now on.

At these prices, you could afford to go for the weekend.

But I would suggest flying into Osaka rather than Tokyo, unless there's something you really want to see in Tokyo, like Disneyland or the Ghibli Museum (both great).

The trip from the airport from Osaka is much cheaper than Tokyo, especially if you are taking the bus to Shinsaibashi (Osaka suburb). Just catch the Namba Okat bus outside the arrival hall.

From Osaka, it's a short Japan Rail Pass (buy before you leave Australia) trip to Himeji (great castle), Kyoto (Fushimi Iinari walk), Hiroshima and Miyajima (Itsukushima Shrine and Mount Missen, where I always broke my back).

Slighlty longer trips from Osaka on JR include two of the greatest gardens you will ever see (Ritsurin Koen at Takamatsu and Kenrokuen at Kanazawa). The JR ride to Takamatsu is especially breathtaking for the countryside. Keep your eyes peeled for the bonsai factories on the way into the station.

Japan is also cheap, unlike what most people think, even at today's exchange rates. There's a convenience store practically everywhere and unlike our convenience stores, they don't gouge you.

I've found the perfect place to stay in Osaka too. It's called Flexstay Shinsaibashi Inn and it's incredibly cheap, if basic and in the entertainment area of Shinsaibashi.

Do yourself a favour and go. You will absolutely love it.

Don't forget to eat at the best burger place in the world, Mos Burger, with Freshness Burger a close second. Mister Donut's angel cream donuts are also to die for. The prawn sushi at Daimaru is out of this world and the ham and cheese croissants at the train station convenience store are a great start to the day.

Oh, how I want to go back :)

    • Japan is awesome, I agree, but compared to most asian countries it's quite expensive. You'd probably end up spending about the same amount of money to holiday here in Australia as you would over there assuming you'd stay/eat/relax in similar places.

      • +1

You are right that it can be more expensive than other Asian countries. If you just want to go somewhere where it will be cheaper than Australia to take a holiday, Japan probably isn't what you are looking for.

I've travelled extensively in Asia and there are cheaper places like Thailand that I would never visit again if someone paid me. But some people absolutely love Thailand, so to each their own.

I have heard that Vietnam is wonderful and it certainly looked so from Top Gear, but I've only got a slight interest in going there.

My point was that people think Japan is expensive, but depending on how you do it, it's not. For example, my family of five went with Jetstar back when airfares were $700 each return, stayed about 10 days and spent under $10,000 in total, including lots of spending money.

That's less than $2,000 each and that included eating out for breakfast, lunch, dinner, plenty of snacks in between, airfares, accomodation, rail passes, bus fares, subway fares and entry into places where you had to pay (was usually less than $6 or $7 each (zoos, etc).

There wasn't a lot that we saved on because of the number of people travelling, except the accomodation. A single person could easily do it all for $2,500 for a similar time frame. In my books, that is excellent value. Japan is also quite a unique cultural experience compared with other Asian countries.

EDIT : I forgot to mention in my first post that the hotel I mentioned also has free ethernet broadband in every room, which is quite handy for planning the day's activities. My son also said I should have mentioned the Osaka Pokemon Center, which is a great store for kids to spend some time in. If you're in Shinsaibashi, go the Loft department store. Lots of cool things to bring home, like a funky t-shirt magic folderer or weird looking ice trays. Yes, Japan's not cheap, but for what you get, it's an absolute bargain.

    • Hey thanks for your comments. Very informative and are helpful in making my decision to go!!!!!

    • You completely ruined your post with your last point with Mos Burger ;)
They are absolutely oily (but compared with McDs or Hungry Jacks they are great!) but the adverts looks really mouth watering (which is why I tried fast food in Japan!)

EDIT: hostelworld.com.au is a pretty good site to get cheap stays as well, the places where I stayed were about AUD$30/person/night and they are pretty clean and decent sized (I even got ensuite for my Tokyo stay)

      • Could you please tell me the name of the hostel you actually stayed at, thanks

  • Thanks for doing the research adiosofenn !

  • seriously considering going to Japan right now!

  • Japan is awesome. Go there!

Adioso guys, I noticed that (annoyingly) Jetstar sales are quite one-sided. For example, Sydney-Honolulu is quoted $299 each way, but if i do a search for Honolulu to Sydney (the reverse way), the price appears as AU$236+$298 on Adioso, but then US$578.01+US$510.92=US$1,088.93 once clicking through to the Jetstar site. Do you know if there is a way to access the sale if flying FROM Honolulu and not Sydney?

If not, it seems very fishy.. is this kind of jetstar tactic legal?!
