DX.com hacked?

I own several domain names, mainly to do with my own surname, so instead of having one email address, I can use any [email protected](not a real domain) and it will go to my email inbox.

For dx.com, I signed up as [email protected]. I noticed that I got a spam mail today to that email address from Aurabuy.com, not sure if my email address was handed over willingly or dx.com has been hacked.

What do you think?

  • i received spam to an old paypal address from aurabuy recently. i also used that to pay dealextreme many moons ago.

i've noticed an increase in spam from unique email addresses i've used to sign up to some chinese sites: buyincoins, tmart, sammydress, focalprice.

    maybe they sell their databases

  • You may have found the link to the Aurabuy spam. I received the same email today.
DX hacked, or otherwise 'associated' with Aurabuy? No idea. May become clearer in time.

I admire the care taken you've with your email. I'm silly not to have taken similar precautions.

Mattgal, I've also noticed a real ramp-up of China-site related spam recently.

  • I used DX for the first time recently and I have never been near Aurabuy (what is it?) so we shall see if I get spam from them. I get almost zero spam except for the occasional Viagra ads. I have Gmail and it handles most spam very nicely as long as you don't mind the ads.

I purchased and opened a new web page at a server.

I setup a brand new email address but before I had sent an email from it - within 2 days - I was receiving junk emails from no less than 7 sources. Draw your own conclusions.

I got all the spiel beforehand, like "we will never share your email address with anyone" and "your privacy is important to us" and "read our privacy policy" - yes they had one!… but alas it seems to all mean nothing. This practice is in no way restricted to just my server.

Many of these "FREE" sites are heavily into "harvesting" peoples email addresses and selling their lists for money to other sellers desperate for customers.

Next time you go to a site that asks you to register, ask yourself why. They'll ply you with a good reason… but is it?

I reached the conclusion long ago that the internet is still in the wild west stage and it seems no one is willing to send a sheriff in to this "Dodge City and clean it up.

    • Time to "Get the hell out of Dodge" I'd say :)
