Advice on buying the New Macbook Pro 13"

Hi
I am looking to switch to Mac and was waiting for the new MBP to launch. As it is so new I do not think Dick Smith, etc. will offer the 10% anytime soon.

Are there other places to get it with a discount? I see that Megabuy is offering about a 7% discount on the system I am looking at (13", 8GB, 256GB).

I have access to the Educational Store but there discount at the moment is only about 6.5%. Would the Apple Black Friday sale late in November further discount these prices?

Lastly, my max budget is about $2000. I was weighing up whether to spend extra on a 512GB SSD (instead of the 256) or on a i7 processor. I plan to run either bootcamp or parallels and Win 8 at least in the beginning.

Thanks

I personally would choose storage over processor as the difference a processor upgrade will make with standard usage is marginal.

    • thanks, will try the store/online to see if they have stock!

      • You can price match in apple store better than to deal with dick smith

        • yes you can.

Why bother. Buy a real laptop with a real OS not something deliberately crippled and locked down.

    • please shut up, how does that answer the OP's question.

You know that there is no new 13" MacBook Pro, right?
Theres a new 13" MacBook Pro Retina but no new standard Macbook Pro. The standard 13" is still the Mid-2012 and is likely to be discontinued next year. I think it would be better for you to get a 13" Air, which was updated in June, it had updated processors and a substantially better battery life (12 hours+ with OS X Mavericks). Overall the processor is on par with the Pro, the graphics chip is also on par, if not better, and it has flash storage which is much faster than a standard HDD.

Personally I'd go for the 13" Retina Pro but thats just me.

    • Sorry, my bad. I meant the MBP with retina.

      • Then, get one. :)
the Haswell upgrade as well as the IRIS Pro graphics make it a very good system. Running bootcamp shouldn't be a problem (except for how much space in your SSD you're willing to allocate for Windows). I would suggest waiting for the sale at DSE and then price matching at an Apple store, if you don't like it, you can return it within 14 days no questions asked.

  • If you haven't used a Mac before, I suggest you have a good play around with one prior to buying as it may not be your cup of tea. The layout & function ability is different to that of a Windows based operating system.

I personally find a Mac nowhere near as convenient as a windows operating system, but then again my laptop is for general use only.

Have you looked at Designwyse, from your profile I see you are in Sydney, they are in Victoria. I bought a 15"MBP antiglare for a very good price (previous model (delivey cost+$11.00)).
They currently have 13" also. I dare say most likely cheaper than the $1999.00.
They also have Applecare for less than 1/2 PRICE!
E-mail them, and try and get onto Daniel S. he's very helpful. However they are only open mon-fri.
Here's a link I posted re: their sale (they currently have new models which I have not had a chance to, but wanted to post on OZB (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/110337).

  • Thanks ozf1. I just got the new rMBP 13" from JB for 10% off. They pricematched DS.

    • No probs. Would've been cheaper than 10% im sure at Designwyse, but as long as you are happy. Don't forget the less than 1/2 price Applecare, that's an insane price, im sure you wont get at DS or JB (if it interests you).
