any idea what targets 1000tc are like compared to "better" brands? i bought a set of dealsdirect 1000tc that are paper thin, cant be any more than a genuine ~200tc

They're actually pretty good. And excellent value when on sale!

We've got 2 sets of their 1000TC and a set of the 500TC. 1000TC are okay, although I wouldn't pay full price for them as they are not as luxurious as the real 1000TC. Not thin, though. We've had it for about 18 months (on rotation) and they're doing alright.

The 500TC are too thin, though. And for some reason they don't feel like real cotton (a bit too cold? Can't explain).

I must say their RRP has increased, so half price is maybe 3/4 the price of what it was about 6 months ago. If you're patient (and not desperate), you could have a look into the online clearance section — saw several last night that were dirt cheap (about 30 to 40-ish for 1200TC queen).

Sound like you got the Sheridan sheets from dealsdirect. I once bought them, and they were shocking. Started pilling within the week.
Have both the Target 1000 and 1200 TC sheet sets. They are very good for durability. So thick that they almost need a cycle of their own in the washing machine. But they last.

Sheridan 1000TC are EXCELLENT quality in my experience - if they are piling within a week, there's something very wrong and I'd return them. I worked at Sheridan for a few years and we never got any complaints about the 1000TC sheets.

I bought a 250tc sheet set from Deals Direct (unbranded), lucky I only paid $30 delivered because the quality is awful. I have 250tc sheets in another brand and the quality is at least 10x greater.

ETA - just checked and the Deals Direct ones are supposedly 400TC, which just shows what a load of crapola that is…

hehe funny enough i used to work in the factory at sheridans for a while. the shit they imported and rebadged from india etc was shithouse. the stuff they made "in house" in aus (adelaide) was fantastic.

there aus ~300tc sheets are better than anything i can find these days, including the 1k+ tc sheets…

    • I got caught out buying 1 set of 1000TC sheets a few weeks back, I only got a bottom sheet and 2 pillow cases at half price. Went back a week later and all the packets had top and bottom sheets plus pillow cases. Seems they have different sets available but both the same RRP

Generally the higher the thread count, the thinner the threads have to be to actually fit that many into the weave. They're usually meant to be stronger and better quality fibres, but often they aren't so they've got a high chance of pilling. Some places count multi-ply yarn as 2 pieces even though it's actually 1 - so their 1000 thread count sheets are just ~500 or so. Target got in trouble for this a few years back. I'm always suspicious of sheets over the 600 mark.

My current favourite sheets have lasted me 4 years of constant use (washed weekly then put straight back on the bed) and they're a 375 thread count bamboo/cotton mix. Softest things in the world, whenever I've tried to put new cotton sheets on the bed my husband whinges like I've made him sleep on hessian. However, I got another set in a different colour from the same place, and they pilled instantly :(

It's hard to pick sheets, you have to feel them first and even then they might pill for no good reason. Thread count is one indication of quality (ie don't go too low), but isn't the only thing you should consider.

edit: Avoid polycotton too, the polyester fibres can separate from the cotton so you end up with pilling

Sheet quality is determined more by weight (gsm) than thread count.

Most stores are happy to advertise the thread count, but they don’t tell you how thick the thread is.

They don't tell you if a thread (that is really two threads twisted together) is counted as one thread or two, or is part of their thread count (so is it a 600 thread count sheet or is it really just a 300 thread count sheet?).

They also don't tell you if they are using the old thread count method (threads per square inch) or the new method (threads per 10cm square).

I used to work at Sheridan and people would constantly ask why our 1000tc sheets were so much more expensive than Target's, then would roll their eyes as if I was lying when I explained this to them.

You can often determine the quality just by looking at and feeling sheets, but you don't know how well they will wash etc. As an example, I bought some 250tc sheets from Ezibuy and another 400tc set from Deals Direct. The quality is not at all comparable, I would say the Ezibuy sheets are 10x better quality than the Deals Direct ones.

Threadcount is a factor, but it's not particularly important in terms of comfort. Do some googling and you'll see.

It's like megapixels in a camera.. high threadcounts lure the uninformed into making a purchase.

      • Exactly, thread-count (alone) is not a good indication of quality, often it's just a random arbitrary number made-up for marketing purposes.

Actually, I'd like to add that I've not had pilling problems with 1000TC target sheets though. Mine were all bought at the same time 4 years ago.

It was after that purchase that I learnt threadcount didn't matter much :)

      • +1

It's actually worse, because at least megapickles are a real thing. Threadcount doesn't have a uniform definition or methodology, so it is essentially meaningless.

Deals Direct have extra-crappy linen - I would never buy from them again!
I have bought some 1000tc sheets from Target in the past and they are great! :)

  • Thanks OP. Got one of the 800TC with x2 sheets and pillowcases.

  • thx OP

  • thanx op :)

  • Also target branded pillows 40% off and pillow cases 25% (I think? A 250 tc twin pack was marked $16 but scanned $12)

    Anyone else worked at Sheridan's??

    • factory or outlets?

i was at the factory for a while

  • I have about 6 sets of Actil first line sheets I bought from a sheridan factory outlet, that are only 200tc and they are the most luxurious sheets I have ever owned.
Thread count is a waste of time.

    • same and mine were/are patterned - only plain white available now :(
