  • Awesome I've been wanting to try one of these out for a while

    • I know just ordered mine! Can't wait!

      • Sorry I changed my comment before you replied to it ;)

        • haha you did too, this is getting confusing

        • +2

Hahaha let's just stop :P, before our brains implode.

  • Did it cost you $50.16? I got a 19c Paypal fee :S

These are great little devices for streaming youtube from computer / tablet / phone.

Streaming works from Linux as well.

    Nice find.

  • +5

So in Aus, it basically just does youtube streaming?

    • +1

No, you can stream music, browser content, including local videos from your pc.

Some people have installed flashcast to mod it - DNS bypass to allow Netflix.

Other things will be available once the SDK is finalised.

  • isnt it $35 in USA - as Ozbargainers - we should be outraged that it costs us nearly $50….

    • +2

Ye but it'd be about 10 dollars postage + Exchange rates.
$35 flat rate if you get it from Amazon.

    • Do they sell them in store in US? Might pick one up next month at that price.

      • yep, $35 in the US at retail stores. I picked mine up from Best Buy last week.

Why not just get a ATV? AirPlay is a very open protocol.

    • +2

Cause it only works with Apple products…

      • -5

        no.

      • Clearly you don't understand open protocol.

      • Apple TV is working with some Android apps for mirroring. … just Google it !

why get something that costs double the price when something half the price will do the job?

        1. In store availability.
        2. Remote.
        3. More content on iTunes store.
        4. Can connect to Plex without jailbreak.
        5. Massive amount of streaming options via VPN.
        6. ????
        7. Profit
        • Ahh, you're assuming everyone wants to do all those things.

        • "Ahh", no I'm not.I gave you advantages of the ATV. If you don't need those features, buy the cheaper option. Surely that should be obvious…

        • You said "Why not just get a ATV?"

I said why get something that costs double when something half the price will do the job?

You then replied giving reasons that aren't related to "the job" that was mentioned previously.

Obviously if someone wanted iTunes content, an IR remote, being able to purchase from a store, or massive VPN streaming options, they won't be getting a Chromecast. People here (where there's no general availability or advertising) who know what a Chromecast is would usually know whether or not it suits them.

If your point was so obvious, why did you even have to mention a device that's double the price which everybody knows about?

          Surely that should be obvious?

        • I was asking if there was any advantage of the Chromecast over the ATV, BESIDES price.

          Cool your jets fanboy.

        • +1

Saying "Why not just get an ATV? AirPlay is a very open protocol" is a rather strange way of asking "Does the Chromecast have any advantage over the ATV that costs double?"

Do you see how your post means a totally different thing to other people?

You're resorting to name-calling now? Awww.

Would like to order one but what's the service like with fishpond ? Read a lot for bad reviews… Any OZB'ers dealt with them before?

    • Reviews seem bad but 1 in every 10 says it has excellent service, I hope I am the 1 out of 10. :(

      • +2

…from all reviews I think it's not the product worth to buy it right now.

  • Bought.

  • 0 left in stock… Delivery is a month from now though.

  • …aaaand they're gone

  • +1

Not bad! Though it says "Ships from USA supplier". How long would it take? When I ordered GoT from FishPond, it took more than a month! It didn't arrive shrink-wrapped either.

There seems to be Chromecasts on eBay "from local sellers" for $65 (with shipping):
    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=281194…

Damn it, don't know if I can wait…

  • Roku + twonky = everything u need

Bought from fishpond once. Waited 6 months only to get an email saying they will give me a refund. Was nice of them to look after my money for me I guess. Not buying from them again though. Could be just an unlucky experience.

    • +1

Bought from Fishpond once too. Purchased a cheapish book for $11. It came 6 months later too. I forgot about it by then. As it arrived, I also received an email the same morning saying my package is on the way.

      Ironic.

    • +1

No, you aren't the only one. Same thing happened to me, I also won't ever buy from them again. Even though I really want a Chromecast.

  • I grabbed two of these from Amazon ~6 weeks ago and had them shipped with Price USA Total: AU$100.37

  • This device is a killer app and an alternative if you are looking to buy a smart tv. Not only does it play youtube videos but also videos when using the chrome browser…. plan to buy one for each TV
