Overseas Call Forwarding with Skype - Possible? Bali Data Sim available?

I'm headed overseas for two weeks shortly - Bali. Usually I'm a 'leave the phone at home' holiday type person, but the other half may need to receive calls on her mobile phone number for graduate jobs she's applying for.

To try and minimise the inconvenience to potential employers, ideally what would be great is if I can forward calls to her mobile number through a skype account to her phone, with the ability to leave a voicemail if we are out of service.

So my questions to Ozb:

  1. Can this be done with Skype?

  2. Can this be done with her Australian Sim Card removed (roaming costs not worth it)?

  3. Whats reasonable in Bali in terms of a Data Sim to put in her phone to enable Skype Access? Would this hinder her receiving calls on her mobile number via skype?

Any assistance here would be of great help!

  • Bali data sucks, even on the better networks.

I would just roam & turn data off.

  • prepaid data card is about 15 bucks for 1.5g

    also free wi-fi everywhere

  • Just use local telco such as Telkomsel, Indosat or 3. You can get 5 GB data for less than 10 AUD with 3 network.
See http://tri.co.id/pascabayar/kartu_internet.php#kartu_interneā€¦ ; just use google translate

So if I get this right, you want her to be reachable on her Australian mobile number while in Bali using Skype?

Yes, this can be possible. I'll go step by step, and since it is two weeks, you can set it up only for a month.

    1. Setup a Skype account if you don't have one already.
    2. Be sure her mobile can actually forward calls to an Australian number.
    3. Get a Skype Number subscription for Australia.
    4. Pick the number you like the most (it can be a local number from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, I think).
    5. Now set up your phone to froward all those calls to your Australian Skype local number.
    6. Whenever someone calls her on her mobile, they will be contacting her Skype account.
    7. She can even record a greeting for Skype's voicemail.

Now, let say she really wants to be reachable 24/7. If you are going to have a mobile in Bali, you can do the following:

    1. Get a local Sim in Bali with a local number.
    2. Login to your Skype account and set up call forwarding from there. Basically in here you tell Skype that whenever someone tries to call you to Skype, to forward that call to the number you decide, which in this case will be your new Bali number. You will be charged by Skype by the minute.

Of course you can set up steps 8 and 9 to be called to any number you want, not only a mobile, so, if you prefer, it could be your hotel room's direct number.

So, to make it clear, if you set it up and follow instructions up to step 9, it will go like this:

    • Someone will call your other half to her Australian mobile number.
    • The call will be transferred to your Skype number as set up previously.
    • The original caller will then be calling your Skype account without knowing it.
    • Skype will transfer that call from your Skype account to the Bali number you set up.
    • Your Bali phone will ring, answering the call from Australia. The Australian caller will not pay a cent more than the call to your other half's Australian mobile, and you will be paying by the minute the call to Bali at Skype rates.

Hope this helps you and that she gets a job soon. If you have any questions, let me know or PM me.

    Enjoy your trip :)

    • Absolute legend! That is exactly what I was wanting to achieve! Thanks!

      • No worries!!! Always glad to help. This is the reason I keep Skype as my VOIP provider :)

        Hope she gets the job!

    • Excellent post, Nachotroncoso. Just wanted to add that depending on your Australian mobile plan, you might also get charged standard call charges every time a call is forwarded to your Skype number.

      • Just checked my TPG plan (old Super Value Medium Plan) - Call Diversions within Australia are included in Cap Value at 38c/minute. Woop!

I cant fathom how/why people use international roaming with this in place…. ludicrous!

    • Plus the call forwarding rate of your mobile provider.
      Thats usually not free.
