Looking for advice on computer purchase

Hi all,

I'm a first-year IT student and I'm looking to purchase a new desktop to relieve my tiny laptop from it's duties. So far in my course I've had to run android emulators and compiled code and my HP DM1 isn't really up to the task.

I'm still a total noob when it comes to PC components, but I've come across this HP Compaq 6005 Pro for $517 inc. shipping. It seems like good value, but I'm not entirely sure. Any opinions would be much appreciated.

Also would the 'small form factor' impede future upgrades i.e. graphics card?

Cheers.

That's a very outdated model, Phenom 2's are 3-4 generations behind now. You can also forget about running a graphics card — it only does low profile GPU's and the power supply won't cope with higher end ones.

You can do better than that. Every Thursday morning, CPL posts a desktop deal. Wait for that.

You can also go to MSY and get a computer built for you.

    E.g

    CPU: Core i5 4430 $205
    RAM: 8GB DDR3 G.Skill 2133 MHz $98
    MBD: ASRock B85M Pro4 $87
    GPU: 7850 / 7870 / GTX 760 ???
    HDD: Seagate Barracuda 2TB $95
    DVD: Samsung 24X SATA $18
    CASE: Coolermaster N300 $49
    PSU: [Corsair VS550 $65] www.msy.com.au/product.jsp?productId=9908

    $617 + $100 Windows 8 OEM + $70 desktop assembly fee.

    Edit: updated part listing.

  • Awesome thanks heaps for the example, might wait for a CPL deal as I just found this deal which seems outstanding for <$600

  • keep in mind shipping
    CPL is in Vic

  • If you're an IT student, buy the parts yourself and assemble it yourself. No better way to learn than to do it yourself. There are plenty of youtube video walkthroughs and websites around the net with information about how to assemble a computer from different generations without too much problem.

Do a bunch of reading and research and DIY. You'll find yourself learning a lot more as well.
