Melbourne to Brisbane with Tiger Air - Anyone Recently?

Planning to fly to Brisbane for a short stay, hasn't anyone RECENTLY flown with them and have they improved as in departing on time etc?

  • flew ad-mel and back over the weekend…. Outward was bang on time, inward was 15 mins early…

  • However….. Figures for Sept are worrying….

Of the major domestic airlines, Qantas achieved the highest level of on time departures for September 2013 at 86.6 per cent, followed by Virgin Australia at 83.8 per cent, Jetstar at 76.4 per cent and Tigerair at 73.8 per cent. The regional airlines were led by Regional Express at 90.1 per cent, followed by Virgin Australia Regional Airlines at 86.4 per cent and QantasLink at 79.5 per cent.

Qantas also achieved the highest on time arrivals among the major domestic airlines at 85.9 per cent, followed by Virgin Australia at 81.6 per cent, Jetstar at 76.9 per cent and Tigerair at 69.2 per cent. Regional Express was the best performing regional airline for on time arrivals at 87.8 per cent, followed by Virgin Australia Regional Airlines at 81.4 per cent and QantasLink at 75.6 per cent.

Tigerair had the highest percentage of cancellations (4.8 per cent) during the month, followed by Jetstar (2.8 per cent), QantasLink (2.6 per cent), Virgin Australia Regional Airlines (1.0 per cent), Virgin Australia (also 1.0 per cent), Qantas (0.9 per cent) and Regional Express (0.4 per cent).

    • The real problem IMO is the cancellations. Tiger often doesn't have any other flights to put you on, which leaves you to buy expensive last minute fares with another carrier (and don't expect any compensation). at least with Virgin and Jetstar flights if cancelled they have a lot more flights per route and can usually put you on another one close in time.

  • Why not use Jetstar via their price guarantee? It will work out 10% cheaper than Tiger.

  • Well I flew Mel BNE return at end of October. Prior to this I had not had any problems with Tiger. Had to wait about an hour in MEL prior to take off - this was OK as I had no critical connections to make.
I have booked another flight departing BNE at 14.20 in December. Today I was told that I now have a change and will be boarding flight to MEL at 20.10. This is a bugger as it will not arrive back in MEL till 23.35 and even if I get Skybus I will not be able to get connecting suburban train home. Will have to catch a taxi. I am not happy. Can't help but wonder if the 14.20 is still flying but they have more full paying passengers who want that flight and so my cheapie ticket $172 return has been moved to later less popular flight.

I have flown on about a dozen tiger flights and this is the first unhappy event I have encountered but it is sufficient to make me consider not flying with them again. It will cost me $178 to fly back at a reasonable time. JoyV
