Having a Windows 8 and Android Phone

Hi,

I've been currently using a Sony Xperia Z, however I really do like Windows Phone 8 as an OS, and the Nokia Lumia 1020 seems to be a great phone.

I'm planning on selling my Xperia Z (it's in good condition, how much could I get for it? Maybe $400?) and buying the Lumia 1020 before the 25th of November (any good deals?).

However, I would also like to get a cheaper, smaller Android phone with me so I can still keep all the apps I purchased, and get newer apps/games before they are released for WP8. I'm willing to spend up to $300 for this, something that is powerful enough to run smoothly, but I'm willing to sacrifice on other specs to save money, since it won't be used for a lot of other things.

What models can you suggest I get? I'm thinking maybe the Nexus 4, 8 GB for $249.

Thanks!

  • Why not get a Nexus 7 tablet or something instead of a second Android phone? Or do you plan to make calls from this too?
The Nexus 4 is a solid phone that is very cheap right now considering its successor was released today.

  • I second a small tablet. Or a BIG phablet, like the 'MATE'.

Or, you can get yourself a Z10 or a Z30 by balckberry instead of two new phones, and use all your android apps, as well as all your Blackberry apps\ nicer & more stable OS

    :)

Lol, installing android apps on a blackberry looks like a massive pain.

      Lol again.

      • WAYYY before OS 10.2 bro, thats like saying installing on DOS is harder than Windows… well DUH.

Full Android 4.* support? yes please.

if you call 'clicking' on a single .bar file a 'massive pain' then I have even less hope for the mobile addicted masses than I had before. A single browse to folder and touch is now too hard? FML.

Take APK from his andriod phone he's selling.
Convert to BAR (one click online)
        Copy to memory card
        Install.

/shrug seems a moot point anyway. Grab a Huwei MATE, they're big, but portable, and VERY cheap.

        • You seem angry.

Take APK from his andriod phone he's selling.

So how do I install an android app without having the apk?

        • I'm not angry; s'all good.

And you dont install them without the APK. There is no such thing as an Adnroid app that doesnt have an APK, unless its JAVA or html5, in which case it'll run natively anyway.

  • Thanks for all your input. The main reason I'm hesitant with getting a tablet is I already have a Surface 2 Pro. I'd prefer something smaller. I might look on eBay for second hand Android phones, not too fussed about it. For Lumia 1020, the $677 deal at HN does look good considering the convenience and Australian stock warranty.

  • I'm still happy with my Nexus 4, biggest gripe for me is battery life. For me, from 6am - 9pm battery drops till about 20% with maybe 5-10min browsing and no phone calls. GPS and wifi radio (but no wifi connection) on all day. Yes you can turn things on and off and tweak things here and there to conserve battery but I can't be bothered. Camera is nothing to boast about either. However I would still buy it again as it's very cheap for what you get.

From your initial post I don't think you will be disappointed with it as it's not your primary phone so battery life shouldn't really matter nor will the camera since your 1020 will be your camera. You might want to consider 16gb model since you plan on installing games on it though. You get about 13gb of useable storage, not sure what the 8gb gets left with but I'm guessing around 5gb. Real Racing 3 is already like 2gb or something ain't it?

  • I hope you've considered the nexus 5.

    • I have, but as my non primary phone I couldn't justify buying it at launch :)

  • Smaller phone? How small, and how up to date do you want the OS to be?
I have a Motorola Defy Plus with ICS on it, and it is rooted (and I have an install of JB ready to go). My son used it for 2 weeks before he ran back to his iPhone. If you are interested, let me know.

  • Avoid any windows phone unless you enjoy installing tons of bloatware on any computer you want to interface with.
    Android all the way.
