Cheap and LIGHT Windows 7 laptop for my mum

Hi guys,

My mum travels a bit. She takes her big chunky 15 inch laptop along with her when she travels, but is looking for something light.

She isn't looking for anything powerful - just windows 7 and MS office. Secondhand machines don't bother her.

11-13 inch
Windows 7
MS Office
Light - preferably 1.5kg or less

Any suggestions?

Get a second hand macbook air.
I know its not native windows 7, but you can run Windows 7 on it, if you want to.
You may be able to convert her!

    • Converting her the wrong way!

  • There's a few laptops on ebay, but they have abysmal battery life.

Show her a surface rt tablet with the keyboard or a chromebook. Pretty much all laptops come with windows 8 now.

  • Type in Dell Clearence Centre. W7, cost effective and depending on what you choose light. Alot of Dell laptops can either be W8 or W7 as roll back. I'd suggest talking to them first as stock is added and removed quickly.

  • Hi mate. I was impressed with the performance of my laptop so I grabbed a deal on a second hand similar one. I intended to send it to my friend as a present but turned out he already bought. I had it for about 4 months now and have tested it and rarely used it as a backup for my study.

The model is ASUS U36JC and it's called ultrabook cause it's 13.3'' screen and it's so slim and light (19mm thin and 1.6kg witght). The laptop lasts me 6 hours easily with the right mode for low-performance use while high-performance mode for intensive use of the Core i5 processor gives you 2 hours. For full specifications check this link: http://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/U36JC/#specificatio…. I still have the laptop in great conditions in the box. Both of us are from Melbourne btw, so if you are considering to buy just let me know.

    • Hi Hatem, i am interested in the ASUS U36JC for my dad, let me know, email me at [email protected]

      Thanks

  • How much is your budget? :P

That's like the most important thing, because I can suggest laptops from anywhere from $700 to like $2000!

Asus transformer range that runs windows 8. I bought the TF810 a month ago for $350 at the DSE sale and while it's a bit slow, it's got a digitizer and 16 hrs battery life. In real life, that translates to about 2 full days work without charging and I've been leaving the charger at home instead of carrying it.

If your mum isn't worried about a 10.1 inch screen or windows 8, go for the Asus T100. If you want something with a bigger screen, go for an Asus Vivotab. Both are under 500.

    • I'd say the Asus T100 too!

  • I know COTD aren't very popular with OzB, but I did see this the other day:
HP 12.1” HD i5 Rugged EliteBook
$499 + delivery. Win7 pro and 1.53kg. No MS Office mentioned, but OpenOffice is open-source and compatible with MS formats.
Dunno if I'd call it "cheap" but it looks sturdy!

  • Thanks guys. I've been looking in the $500 range.

Interesting call on the macbook air. I actually own an Asus UX21 and that's almost identical in terms of form factor. She's actually after my machine, it's only an i3 but does the job brilliantly.

I'll look up the dell clearance centre too, there might be something there.

All of these are 10" or less - so may not fit your 11" criteria.

    Windows Surface 2 - not bad <$500
    http://microsoft-news.com/must-watch-this-video-shows-the-fu…
Office 2013, Skype (free for 1 year*) and SkyDrive for 2 years.
NB: This is an ARM processor and needs 'Microsoft store' apps - not any old *.exe.
    10.1" screen

    Baytrail Asus T100 @ $500. Long battery life, x86 (2gb ram only).

    10" screen

Dell Venue 8 Pro (8" x86 baytrail tablet) - probably not shipping in australia yet.
