Hi, I'm looking to buy a new graphics card as I will be giving my old graphics card away. GTX 780 Ti was just announced. I am amazed by the specs of GTX 780 Ti however it comes with a high price tag about $100-$150 more than the R9 290X which is a bummer. And AMD's R9 290x isn't too bad either with the addition of AMD's mantle which keep things really interesting. Let me know your thoughts, i'm leaning towards GTX because of stability and quietness (sound freak guy).
Thanks!

  • Depends on a lot of factors, i'd personally favor Nvidia because their GTX 780 and Ti run slightly cooler with reference cooler. Which would mean a little bit more headroom for OC if you are running air cooling. If its W/C then its anyone's game.

I'd just look at the performance rather then the gimicks such as physX and mantle etc. That way you can get a more objective feel which you would rather.

Having said that GTX 770 is no slouch so i don't see a point in upgrade unless you're like me and want the best in the rig (GTX 780 SLi here lol, and looking to sell my two for GTX 780 Ti Sli)

    EDIT
NVM just saw you said you will be giving your card away lol

    • I don't think it's fair to put mantle in the same group as Physx. Physx is a gimmick for sure which decreases performance. Mantle is an API which is supposed to increase performance.

I have been saving for a new GTX 770 (feel free to give yours to me OP haha) but I think I'm going to wait and see how this mantle thing pans out. If it does give massive performance gains, could seal the deal for me..

      • But doesn't mantle require the game to use the GCN coding to actually use it? Much like the game has to be coded for PhysX to use it… i could be wrong so some clarification of this would be appreciated

        • Yes it does, but the difference is playing a PhysX game on a card without it doesn't matter. In theory playing a Mantle game on a card without it will.

          Time will tell.

  • I'd vote for neither unless you have a lot of cash lying around and nothing better to do with it.

    • Im with bruce, but if you were to donate your old 770 to me I wouldn't complain!

  • +1

Sounds like you've already made up your mind, listing your components shows you're into bragging rights and maybe that's why you want to have the "latest & greatest"?

Before we get into opinions and comparisons let me list my much older system parts too, just to make you feel good about your system ;)

    AsRock Z77 Extreme 4
    i5 3750k O/C 4.2 stable
Some huge cpu fan to make sure it doesn't burn :)
    16 gb G-skill Ripjaws 1600 ddr3 ram , no need for faster
Thermaltake Coolermaster v9 case with built in docking station & a blue led fan!
Antec HCG-620 High Current Gamer Gaming PSU
    Intel 330 120 Gb SSD
    Sandisk Extreme 240Gb SSD
    3 x WD 2TB Sata3 HDD
    Gigabyte 7850 2 gb Video
Soniq 48 " TV as HDMI monitor
(no need for more than 1920 x 1080 for any call of duty , sniper elite type games)
Generic Twin TV Tuner USB dongle for recording to HDD

Ok. now that's out of the way, the usual question is what are you using the computer for, video production, cad work, or extreme gaming? I like the red camp when it comes to video cards, having had problems with Nvidia cards in the past

While I game a lot, I mainly play shooters and really don't see any point in having to spend a lot of money just to play at 2500 + resolution with 100 fps rates.

At the end of the day, my advice is to wait, wait and then just wait some more. Give the market time to settle
pricing time to level out, test at toms hardware between various cards at different tasks.

Reports on things like reliability, coil whine if any, at higher loads, heat issues and 3 mths on maybe you'll get decent price reductions, we all have been slugged for having the latest toy on the block.

Then again, if you have wads of cash to get rid of, go for the GTX 780 Ti or get two and SLI "heat the room up" LOL. But remember to check your psu can handle it all
    Cheers Shannon

  • To be perfectly honest, the GTX 780 looks so good right now, $579 from PCCG and it's almost as good as the 290X. It's also a better overclocker (just browse around tech forums and stuff), so that would be the path I'm taking.

The 290X is okay, but I don't think it's worth the $100 or so over the GTX 780 and the GTX 780 Ti is just too expensive.

    • If you're gonna head down that price/performance pathway, the R9 290 (not 290X) is much better value still. $200 cheaper than the 780gtx and according to anandtech benchmarks, is consistently higher performing at high resolutions (loses sometimes at low res.)

Only problem is the power/noise and whether that's worth spending another $150-200 but that's definitely a very subjective area altogether.

      • Where I can get an R9 290 for $200 less than the GTX 780, prices I see are $499, with the GTX 780 at $579.

But yeah, the R9 290 isn't actually on shelves yet, but when it is, the only two cards I can recommend are the GTX 780 and the R9 290.

  • If you can wait, I would suggest waiting until AMD partners reveal their custom coolers for the 290x. Generally they run quieter and cooler (thus more overclocking headroom) for probably $50 more than the reference design.

If you're going watercooling, it's probably an even race. I suppose 290x might be a better choice given it's significantly cheaper.

If you're gonna stay stock and aircool, the gtx 780ti would probably be a better choice given it seems to run much more efficiently than the 290x.

    • Semi off topic:

From reviews of the 290x… i see that changing the fan speed doesn't really reduce the heat of the card, its always at 94ish, so perhaps the card is always throttled? If that is the case then imagine what can do it is properly cooled lol
