GTX 680 or 770 need help please!

Hi guys

I want an upgrade for my 6850 so I can max out FPS games (Far Cry 3, Infinite, AC4)at 1080p. My local PC shop has a couple of Gigabyte 2GB GTX680 OC on clearance for $315. According to my calculations, the 770 would be equal value if it dropped to about $340.

According to my calculations, Radeon HD 7970 Ghz would need to be about $300 to be equal value, so I'm not really interested in that at the moment.

Is it worth waiting a few weeks and hoping for a $50 drop on the 770? Is it worth waiting a few weeks to see if Mantle pans out?

Help much appreciated :)

I would honestly just pull the trigger on the GTX680 for $315.

You're not gonna get a $50 drop in the GTX770 in a few weeks.

Also, Mantle/GSync aren't going to really be relevant in this generation of graphics cards anyway. It's still an upgrade cycle away.

In the short term, no (though BF4 is supposedly being updated for use with the Mantle API in December), but if you keep your card for more than a year or two, then it's worth considering. IIRC, Mantle and G-Sync both support the higher end of the current gen lineups.

  • Cool thanks. Tipped me over the edge, just went out and got it. Now to finish these assignments so I can try it out :D

  • To be honest I would have went with the 7970 seeing as it is the superior card, especially if it is a 3GB variant like most. Radeon in General would have been a good option seeing as two of the games you're looking to play are optimised for AMD hardware. And even the 770 would have been a good option as it is slightly better than the 680 to begin with but mostly as it is a newer card and there will be more on going driver updates for it in the future seeing as the 600 series has been discontinued.

In saying all this, the 680 is still an amazing card, I paid $470 for a 4GB variant only a few months ago and it ran everything on ultra at 1080p so you shouldn't have any problems in the next 12 months.

    Happy gaming :)

    • Yeah, if there was a 7970 at $300 or less I would have recommended that, but the GTX680 at $315 is unbeatable.

  • Even with the optimisation, the 680 is still faster than the Ghz. Also, this is the 2gb Super Overclock ;)

But yeah, I would be interested in the 7970 for OC potential (usually don't OC tho) and mantle..
