Crane Cruiser Bike from Aldi for $119.00

240

This was in the latest Aldi catalogue. About the same price as the Kmart cruiser bike, but typically the Aldi in-house bikes are a bit better quality.

My wife bought a cruiser bike recently from Reid, I wish she had bought this one instead.

  • i've only ridden mountain bikes

are these any good for riding?

    • For fairly flat and short distance riding the cruiser style is alright. Can't say I really like to ride them but they're pretty comfortable

    • they've also got a slightly more expensive mountain bike https://www.aldi.com.au/en/special-buys/saturday-16-november…

i don't understand why cruiser bikes are so expensive. aldi also periodically sells a hybrid bike for $129 with shifters & gears & brakes

that mountain bike would suck as a bike on a mountain. cheap revo gears. hand gear shifter - that would be problematic when going down a bumpy mountain. you want to be holding something that doesn't move. dual suspension on a mountain bike on a mountain - you don't want this. makes the bike to "spongy".

as basic recreational bike - no problem

    • These are preferable to a low-end mountain bike, because you don't have to pull the chain through a crappy derailleur that has no bushings and probably never gets cleaned.

Plus you don't lose energy due to an equally crappy cluster with worn sprocket teeth from the crappy gears and the crappy chain grinding against the sprockets during gear changes and skipping because of the broken sprocket teeth.

Moderate hills aren't really too much of an issue. Monster hills can be.

      • i've got a backup bigw cheapie mountain bike ($60?) and, besides the really crap soft brake pads it came with, i haven't had any shifting problems with it (i've had it close to 1 year). it is a piece of heavy junk with plastic brake levers etc but incredibly it has been reliable. i wouldn't swap it for my other hybrid bike but.

"Low maintenance and fun!", damn, will need to look for one with more fun..

    • +4

The fun part starts when you try to go uphill and then release that you are riding a fixed gear bike…

      • +4

Single speed, not a fixed gear.

        • I thought fixed gear was the right description.

You can go at different speeds with a fixed gear bike.

It seems to me that fixie's only work if you're super fit & the bike is strong.

        • Well. Fixed gear is a type of single speed which don't have freewheel. A bit hard to tell from the picture, but I think geebee might be right as you can't really "cruise" without freewheel.

        • Oh, i geddit now - didn't read far enough on the Wiki…

      • realise** ? wow my mind is so screwed from trying to understand what that meant….

        • sorry. typing/swiping from the phone…

    • +1

Perhaps the aldi unicycle would have higher fun, with even lower maintenance.

Hipsters rejoice! The male bike is pretty cool looking too. Also, in this horrible Sydney weather, I do think that a little bit of paizuri would be good.

    • You think that's bad - check out all those zero ratings for the surf forecast.

  • Can I neg this because there are no freakin' specs?

  • Would this bike be suitable for commuting roughly 5km to work every day?

    • Not if you live in a hilly area.

  • I prefer the look of this one, mainly because of the springy thing in the middle.

    • +1

I bought one similar thinking i can do everything with it.. still haven't taken it out on trail rides and mostly on road only.

Rear suspension is real bad for commuting especially uphill… absorbs so much pedal power. replacing the rear suspension with 1500lb springs (double what mine came with) only marginally fixed the problem.

Wont go Y frame again if I got another bike!

      • +1

Yep. I didnt post that bike because I think that dual suspension bikes suck, particularly low-end dual suspension bikes.

  • I'm looking for one with more gears than one :(

  • +3

This one seems lighter and cheaper! Probably lower maintenance costs too.

  • Would be great to see a deal for an electric flywheel to go with this.

Or just a deal on a universal electric flywheel. I'm too lazy to commute on 100% pedal power.

  • That mens bike looks sweet, too bad there is no Aldi here.

  • pretty good deal. i cant see much that can go wrong with these bikes. these normally go for $450+ at bike stores, obviously better quality.

i suppose if your riding this around the local area to shops or around campus it'll be perfect.

  • Check wheelbase on this as I bought a previous aldi bike and due to it fitting in a short shipping box the wheelbase was so short that when turning the wheel and pedalling at the same time your toes strike the moving front wheel.
    Dangerous!
Would never consider aldi over cheap big w bike again!

  • Got one, only 3 available at Aldi Burwood. SOLD OUT

      How's the bike?

      • Quite small, i wish i could adjust the front so that my back doesnt hurt. Done all i can with the seat height. gears are very good and smooth, cheap tyre rubber, brakes still squeaks after being told that this type of brakes (disk) doesn't squeak.

Still given the price, it is very ridable. And metal frame looks good. Picture looks like actual product, except the tyres.

        5/5 price
3.5-4/5 ride-ability (back is hurting as too small, 66cm frame?)

  • gee the straps on those bicycle helmets are short. i could do up the straps on the large helmet and i don't think i'm packing that much extra flab on my head. they need to be a couple of cm longer

  • Missed out, anyone having second thoughts in Sydney north/ Newcastle I'll take on off your hands

  • +1

Did anyone get one? I got the repair stand- wooohoooo.
