Cheap video card for PCI express x16 for old ASUS Qaud core motherbaord?

Currently have a 256mb card that I think has gone.
Need HDMI, low noise, good life in HOT conditions.

  • Most computer shops will still sell a Radeon 5450 for less than $30 bucks.

It'll fit your HDMI requirement and there are also variants of the card (e.g this) that are fanless.

I run a Galaxy GT430 in my HTPC and also find it be fairly quiet.

  • Anything passively cooled is the way to go if you want reliability i.e.

    Gigabyte GeForce 210 Silent 1GB http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&c…
    or
    Powercolor Radeon HD5450 2GB http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&c…

but if you plan on watching 1080p video (action scenes will probably still suffer) you want at least a step up from that (to stop stuttering and ensuing rage) i.e.
    Gigabyte Radeon HD7750 2GB Overclocked http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&c…
    or
    ASUS GeForce GT 620 1GB V2 http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&c…

Completely unfounded. The 210 or 5450 both do hardware h264 and have no problems with 1080 video.

  • GT610 - http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&c…

    6540 - http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&c…

Or 5450 that Scrimshaw suggested. Literally anything is pretty reliable these days even in hot weather and all cards these days have HDMI. I've never had any component apart from a hard drive fail on me and I've built/used/maintained a lot of computers.

    • +1

I find generally that parts are mostly likely to fail in this order
      1. Motherboard (there is so much going on there that any one part failing will rain on your parade)
      2. HDD (I dunno I guess they just aren't meant to last)
      3. GPU (high end gets HOT and the fact that there is a board to heat up and cook doesn't help)
      4. Fans (I know right, those things are so simple and they still manage to fail)
      5. ODD (it's not that they are reliable, just that nobody uses them)
      6. Ports (i.e. network ports, audio ports or usb ports fail because of plain 'ol user damage and USB ports can prevent system from booting if they are earthed out against the case)
      6. CPU (these almost never fail anymore)

  • Thanks Guys, searched the web, spent a couple of hours looking for answers to my questions.
Thought I would do a trusty OZB search and got some of the best info out of it all :)
I have bought the GIGABYTE nVIDIA GeForce GT610. (It was a hard choice as all 3 candidates are all good!)
