Thoughts on ASUS S550CB-CJ065H W8 Ultrabook - $899 at DSE

Hi Folks,

Looking to get a new computer - in a round about way. Will give my current one to my mum - 2year old 14inch ASUS that i have been very happy with; no problems, it's light weight (~2kg) and the ASUS cool palm rest. So i'll give it to here so she will still have similar Windows XP/7 experience, and i'll learn Windows 8 before trying to teach her at next upgrade at Windows 10!

Noticed this ASUS S550CB-CJ065H W8 Ultrabook for $899 at Dick Smiths. Apparently $300 off.
Specs seem ok. i5, 4gm ram, 4GB NVIDIA Geforce GT 740M graphics, and touch screen.

Use would be for general computing/excel/docs/web etc, as well as some light video editing (currently just Windows Movie Maker on this machine, but might look at getting something better) and light gaming.
Not too fussed with touch screen, but guess nice to have. Also, don't mind if not full HD display.

Couldn't find many reviews and seems like there are several variants, with i5, 8gb ram, and i7's with different graphics cards.

Any other thoughts would be appreciated. Any other suggestions/recommendations.

Thanks

  • It's a decent computer at a decent price, though you can probably find something better at a lower price at MSY.

Touch screen is a gimmick, like, you won't use it. Apart from that it will do all the tasks you want it to do just fine.

    • Thanks Paul

  • so did you buy it? and if so, how is it?
