Note there should be two versions of this sold in Aus - one on the 850/2100 bands for Telstra and 900/2100 for Optus.
My local Officeworks has the 850/2100 version, still not sure if Officeworks sell the 900/2100 version nationally as well.

    • How can u tell which version one has?

I'm actually using one now over WiFi but have been under the impression mine is for Telstra whilst I use the Optus network.

      Thanks.

The bottom of the box will list the WCDMA frequencies.
        e.g. "WCDMA 900/2100" for Optus.

        • Cool thanks. Good thing I don't throw out the boxes to my tech gear!

You should also be able to tell this by looking at the model Type printed on the label located on the back of the phone, hidden behind the battery.

        Below is from GSM Arena:

        2G Network:
        GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 - all versions

        3G Network:
        HSDPA 900 / 2100 - RM-914
        HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100 - RM-915
        HSDPA 850 / 1700 / 1900 / 2100 - RM-917

        • RM-915

          :-(

Guess I'm changing to Aldi to access the Telstra network as soon my Amaysim credit expires.

Thanks for letting me know how to find that out from looking at the phone mate. I would have gone looking through the WP8 settings.

I confirmed with OW, HN and DSE at Castle Hill, all sell version of HSDPA 850/2100.

Confirmed with OW Bondi Junction, too.

Bought the wrong phone in the Mobi sale the other week :( (Luckily it's still shrink-wrapped)

Looks like you can only get the 900 grey from my brief search.

  • Are there any large(r) screen Windows 8 phones around the budget end?

  • same price at harvey norman too

  • Can I use this as Gps navigation with here drive?

    • I haven't tried with mine but I'm pretty sure you can. The phone's got Here Maps and you can pre-download maps for what ever part of the world you need.

    • You surely can. And is it pretty good. You can even download maps and get turn-by-turn navigation without an active data connection.

      • Sweet. Like the fact it doesn't need a data connection. Will be good for when I'm in China next year then. Pity it's not compatible with both 850Mhz and 900Mhz and able to take sims of all sizes… would have been the perfect budget travel smartphone then.

        • Well, can't do anything about the frequencies but getting one of these should solve the SIM size problem.

      • Is this valid for worldwide map? Or just one country?

        • Here is a list of all the supported countries.

However, following is from the Here Drive manual:

Do you have HERE Drive on your phone, and you're planning a trip abroad? With HERE Drive, you can navigate in the country or region your SIM card is registered to. Upgrade your navigation licence to global, and you'll also get voice-guided turn-by-turn directions when travelling outside your home country or region.

So, navigation may not work in the country you are visiting unless you get a local SIM.

EDIT: It costs $19.99 to upgrade to the global licence

  • Don't think this deal will last long as HN has already reversed its price.

  • What exactly does the different frequencies mean? Will these phones work on Optus but no 3G? And does no 3G just mean no internet/data, will voice calls work?

    • You will still be able to access single band 3G on the Optus 2100 band in Metro areas.
      Voice should work anywhere.

      See http://optus.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/441

      • Thanks whitfcd, that doesn't sound too bad. I was going to turn off 3G anyway since GF doesn't have a great plan. She can use wifi at home and work. I only care about voice working.

        • FWIW, I have the RM-915 Telstra model with an Amaysim sim and I was getting good internet at Albury and Canberra last week (the Lumia 520 works great as a hotspot). Optus' 3G single band coverage is still decent if you stick to metro areas.

  • I bought this mobile at HN on Friday. Still getting used to it but so far so good. I use a virgin sim in it.
