You really can't go wrong with either. Once you buy into a Canon or Nikon, it's the lens format that you're really buying into. There are no shortage of lenses from both camps and 3rd party manufacturers. I find that Nikon lenses seem to cover my needs more, but that's personal. The D3100 is MUCH better than EOS 1100, but at the end of the day, the lens determines the result, not the camera body as much these days.

a closer competitor for the d3100 is the 550d. bigw has been selling the d3100 for years, way before the 600d came out
