What is a reasonable price for a clutch replacement?

First time I have to look into replacing a clutch on my 99 Hyundai Excel and was curious to see how much I should be setting asside for the replacement.

  • My '94 GTR was 2.5K. Yours would be quite a bit less I expect.

    • Small difference in cars. Easy access in a gtr, once you take off half the drive-train :p

Then again, most mechanics will try and rip off import owners :p

Yep, that was the last one I owned, for that very reason.

  • +1

Unfortunately without being seen as being smart, depends on how good the rest of the car is, you will probably find unless you can do it yourself, that it will be almost more than the car is worth. Based on a Pulsar - which could be similar - the cost was around $700 - $250 parts and rest Labour.

But is it the clutch or the master cylinder? That would be less to repair. First check the fluid in the cylinder to see if that is down.

    • Cable actuated clutch = no MC.

  • Expect around $650 from a workshop. I work from home and normally charge $500.

    • Which part of Melbourne are you located at? Looking for someone to help with changing transmission fluid.

  • About 600 - 700.

  • The new clutch itself can be had for under $100 if you're lucky. I bought mine from this seller earlier this year. They often have discounts on eBay but you have to be patient.
Currently best I could find is $155 posted.

The job itself should only take 2 hours for a competent mechanic. I see you're in Melbourne, so suggest you check out this topic and PM the OP for info on the mechanic he found, who sounds too good to be true.

    Good luck.

    • Sorry, forgot to mention the job time ^ will depend if they machine your flywheel and if they have the facilities (lathe I'm guessing) or if they have to pass it to a machinist in another location.

  • I had my old one done for $550. But I knew the mechanic enough to get a cheap price. YMMV

edit: Although, I would suggest selling it to someone mentioning the required repairs and buying another excel as the repair costs will soon outweigh the price of the car (personal experience).

I sold the car for $700 + clutch replacement cost. 5 months on, about $1000 of repairs had to be done on it. Made me glad I decided to get rid of it then and there.

  • The problem with selling what you own due to repair costs is if youre not spending a lot (and sometimes even if you are too), you end up buying more repair bills anyway.
