Chevron Supreme Petrol engine oil 10w-40 and 20w-50 $14.97 for 12 quarts @Costco Canberra

60

A good day for us lovely Canberrans ozbargainers,

Was browsing through the automotive section at Costco Canberra (Majura park) yesterday and couldn't believe my eyes. 12 Quarts of Chevron petrol engine oil 10w-40 or 20w-50 for 15 bucks! Works out to be as low as 5 bucks for my car oil change. That's almost half the price of my Castrol 15w-40 on big sales at SCA - 5.5L for $17.

Was reported by our fellow AG-ACT at [$29.99] (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/122063)

Now don't get too excited, it is petrol engines only. Also I haven't done research about Chevron oils yet, so someone who have tried them please comment / criticise before I stock up on these. AG-ACT did claim that these oil are semi-synthetics (note: 1% synthetic blended is also called semi) but this is very vague, if it was semi, why didn't Chevron print that proud and clear on their bottles?

Again don't get too excited, if your car is newer models, it is best to stick with 5w-30 for best oil circulations. I quote from Chevron's [MSDS/PDS] (https://cglapps.chevron.com/msdspds/PDSDetailPage.aspx?docDa…):

"SAE 10W-30 is suitable for use in many older vehicles and a few late model cars and trucks, often those with larger 6-cylinder and V-8 and/or high performance engines. SAE 10W-30 is also designated as a Resource Conserving lubricant by API.

SAE 10W-40 is still a very popular viscosity grade in warmer climates, though it is not recommended by most auto manufacturers for their late model North American vehicles. It is often used in older model cars that see regular high temperature operation."

Last but not least, my apology for the blurry picture. Was in a hurry. I did manage to confirm with Costco staff that it is indeed price for box of 12 bottles. Be quick though as Costco tends to adjust their price slowly if they see a demand, very cheeky.

Another note: This is Costco members only. But being an Ozbargainer, you should know Costco offer full refund if you are not happy being their member.

Hope that was enough info for us all. Happy motoring!

  • WOW. Can anyone confirm this is in Crossroads Costco?

    • Don't know

    • Nope, no signs of that at Crossroads or Auburn for the matter.

  • +1

why 12 x ~1 litre bottles? you need about 5-6 for the avg. car

sounds like oversupply of top up oil

10w40 is fine for most modern cars unless you specifically need 05w30

    20w50 meh

    • So a 'quart' is roughly a litre - thank you from the land of metric!

      • A quart is a quarter gallon, or two pints. But a US gallon is much smaller than an AU/UK gallon.

        946ml bottles.

        • yeah a US gal is 3.7 litres

          imp. gallon is 4.4 litres

you tend to memorise pounds and yards and quarts if you're in the car game

Why? It would have to be a very old car, or US import to not use metric.
Only place I see pounds is people still using PSI for tyres. MPG is long gone.
And who uses quarts aside from Costco?

"The metric system is the tool of the devil! My car gets 40 rods to the hogshead and that's the way I likes it."

        • The US car game maybe… I've been into cars since I could walk and I struggle with imperial! But almost all the cars I've owned/worked on are Japanese..

    • The mechanics I know always use small bottles like these, I don't know why but I think there might be some benefits of doing so. Perhaps its a little faster to know how much oil you have put in without looking at the side gauges? Or the fact that he can leave the bottle on top of the funnel for it to auto fill and go do something else? I dont know, the world is a mysterious place

  • just over $1.10/L, good price

    • Hmmm … Could you burn it in a diesel engine?

  • +1

This is only 10 bucks @ Ringwood

    • and you never posted :p

      $45 at walmart

      • Oh I just added this is API SN. The one on your link is API SM, not sure if its any difference haha

    • No kidding! I might just take a 5 hours trip to Ringwood just for that lol
