So hard to justify the extra features it provides when you can get a PS3 for only $100 more.

Doesn't make the deal either good or bad, just another option.

  • Not going to disagree as already have a PS3.

But this is gonna be great buying for my grandparents who are yet to upgrade to Bluray.

    I thought PS3's still retail at $699?

  • Too true, although you can get it for a little less. So I suppose $150 more would be more accurate.

Although it's possible you could use the likes of Target's price matching 5% competitor beating policy and get it for a bit less. Not certain the policy applies to consoles though.

  • This is a great unit, and you can get HD audio just by plugging speakers to the back of it as it decodes them on board. I did however get one for $499 from The Good Guys a couple of weeks ago… If you really wanted to compare to the PS3, more fair comparing the S350.

  • This is a bargain ?? exactly how …. I mean features are ok , but why not get a PS3 for $70 extra ?
I'll wait for the $99 BD players to upgrade to HD

    • To be fair, the PS3 will use alot more power than a standalone player.
Also, as mentioned by quarrymaster in the comment above, you can connect speakers directly into the player as opposed to using a 3rd party solution (receiver etc) for a PS3.
Also, I have not seen a 80GB PS3 for $599.. $699 yes (thats the RRP on them), MWAVE seems to be selling them for $669 however.

Doing a Google search and browsing a few forums on the issue here is what I found in regards to the +'s and -'s of both.

I have both, so I guess I can say what I like better. I prefer the s550 for watching movies. I find the picture and audio is better on the s550 then on the ps3. Video-wise I feel the colors and details are cleaner, brighter, and sharper. As for the audio I found it to be crisper. The ps3 does load slightly faster, but not by much, the s550 is blazing fast for a stand alone player. The wifi on the ps3 is nice, no question there. If your receiver doesnt accept/process HDMI audio then the s550 is clearly the best choice, the internal decode to analog is a life saver. The ps3 can be used with a Harmony remote, I had mine working, just need to buy a cheap usb remote off ebay, nyko ex. The s550 works amazingly well with the Harmony 880 as well. My friend actually has a ps3 and when he witnessed my s550 he went out and bought one as well, so it obviously left some impressions.
