Watched a movie via one of my 4K discs the other day, and the best thing about physical media has to be the sound. If you have a capable system, even a high-end soundbar, the difference is night and day.

The compression on audio streams from Netflix and the like really pale in comparison. It’s why I keep buying my favourites in physical media. That and you never know when the streaming service will offload it.

There’s sailing the high-seas and downloading remux files, but I think I still prefer physical media for my favourites.

Probably the best Atmos sound there is. Great movie too. Up there with the first movie.

Agree, two weeks ago we watched Interstellar, I have it on physical 4K disc, and my kids asked: why are we using the disc and not Netflix? Answer: the image and the audio are better, way better, you'll see (they didn't notice, they think I am crazy). While I was watching the movie and listening to it (through a proper 2.2 HT), I was blown away (and I get blown away over and over again) by the difference between streaming and physical. Then I watched with the missus No Time To Die, and …. OMG, the IMAX scenes look so awesome, and the sound <3.

Also, that feeling of getting a disc, ejecting the player tray, putting the disc in, putting the disc tray back in, and see the movie menu pop up is priceless.

      • Sorry to burst your bubble Mr Potatohead, but NTTD never had an IMAX release on disc. You'll only see that at selected IMAX cinema's… and FWIW, 'proper 2.2 HT' is anything but… I do agree however that physical media is always the way to go 👍

I have a few friends who are like that with streaming/4K bluray. My friends wife also believed there was no difference between 1080p and 4K bluray. I got frustrated and went out o fmy way to make her notice the differences. Now she cant unsee it and is sulkingly replacing all her bluray films. My work there was done.

Also dont forget the extras that come on physical media. Theres so much content and information with some.

Seeing the physical media collection (of your curated favourites) grow is satisfying, too.

Ultra HD disc on big oled with amp and with chunky speakers thats the way to watch movie

    • If you are watching on a 4K projector expanded to 100", you can tell the difference between 4K bluray and steaming?

      • I’ve not tried that specific use case but where I see a visual difference is in colouring, specifically dark areas. You can see artifacting in the finer details.

  • It’s definitely not a big selection like they usually do. I made the mistake of popping in and none of the stuff I picked up was B2G1F!

    • You would be correct. Looks to be roughly 25% of their inventory for each format.

It appears they added more 4K titles to the deal, along with more Blu-rays (now 484). Will update it.
