Yeah, one day through no fault of your own you won't own it anymore. It'll just be gone.

Odds are though, I'll die well before Apple.
My VHS copies ended up in a bin, my DVD dumped onto an op shop yeeeears back, and my BluRay currently sits buried in a box in a cupboard. There's a good chance that just due to the convenuence, this will get played more than any other version, which is arguably the only real value of "owning" something, how much you use it while you're still here. Can't take it all with you.

Quoted for Truth.

It's not Apple dying that's the problem. It's Apple no longer having the license to stream it because the movie studio revoke it.
Apple Is Deleting Bought Films From iTunes Accounts - And Don't Expect A Refund
.If you happen to have the movie cached locally you can keep watching it, except:
1) You can only do this with 1080p.
2) The storage on AppleTVs is tinny so you’ll only be able to store a couple of movies.
3) If that device stops working and the movie has since been delisted you can’t redownload it.Quoted for Truth.
Except for the fact it's factually incorrect.
This is still a good price so long as you accept it's really just a long term (hopefully) rental.

Another problem is music rights expiring and then other songs getting overlaid.

Apple seems to be in a big push for their media empire, rebranding the TV service, a delay in the expected new hardware might mean changes there, signing F1 for 5 years and doing deals all over the place to bundle services. So it'll be fine for years.
But while Apple dying might not be a problem, killing their media stuff is. Their subscription burns tonnes of money. iTunes isn't really much of anything. It more just pads out the offering. I wouldn't build a huge library of Apple products to stream because there's a good chance they'll just kill it off in 10 years and point to the subscription terms if you don't like it.
$10 for 3 movies to watch whenever you like is great and wouldn't be a loss if it eventually vanished. But it's a good reminder that building a huge library with any streaming service isn't the best idea.

It's less about Apple disappearing and more about them deciding that it's not worth them paying to retain the right to stream them to you anymore. See also: Telstra TV

and here I am slowly buying those VHS in op shops haha.

Except that you're also allowing them to redefine "ownership" by giving them money for a license that they can revoke at any time. And as that becomes more normalized and the Overton window shifts, they'll tighten the screws and remove "perpetual" licenses to extract more money so rentals will be the only official option - "You will own nothing and be happy". We've seen it time and time again.

Obligatory reminder you can download the movies and store them offline even if the licence is lost, Apple covers this on their site that if in the unlikely situation the licence is lost you can download them to any device and continue to use them

"You can permanently download purchased content to your iPhone, iPad, Mac or Windows PC. Once downloaded, you can access content without an internet connection, and Apple can’t remove it from your device."

You still need Apple’s software to play the content though. There’s still DRM.

Convert them over, removes DRM

@UberIsCool: At this point of mucking around just sail the seas. Either they let us own what we buy unconditionally, or the people find alternatives.

@prophet: I have a hdmi capture device and just use iMovie on the Mac. You just run the movie in real time, prob other ways but it was easy for me

Connect iPhone to HDMI capture device, video capture in 4K and save file

This has "photo of a photo on a wooden table" vibes.

Haha, but it’s all digital

For $10 i wudnt mind…

Are you Louis Rossman?

I was just about to say that, when they decide they no longer want to stream it your rental is over. Physical copy or downloadable otherwise your just renting it

To buy, but not to own.

Better get them from the torrents, will last as long your drive where you have it stored or as long as people keep sharing it.

I agree with this, but I'm also prepared to pay $3.33 for a movie and save 15GB on my NAS.

15GB storage space much cheaper than $3.33.
15GB is around $0.4 if using ~$25/TB and you'll actually own it.

Actually own it?

As much as I love physical media, the arguments that buying digital content will somehow give you less longevity with your purchase than buying physical is a bit ridiculous at this point. Many studios aren't even releasing most titles on physical media anymore and many manufacturers are no longer producing players that can actually play the discs. I've had iTunes purchases I made 20 years ago be upgraded to 4K Dolby Vision versions for free and have never had a single issue accessing them, whereas the DVD purchases I made over the same length of time are now of such inferior quality they're obsolete. In another 20 years time Apple and my digital purchases will still likely be around, but I'm far less confident my blu-ray players to play all my discs will be.

Physical media sounds and looks better than the compressed streaming alternatives. It’s a great shame physical media is dying.
Hopefully we get an option to stream lossless versions of shows but it’ll come at a cost.
And as others have said, you’re paying $9.99 for unlimited streaming, not to own.
I will always choose physical media over streaming.

Yep. Physical media is so much better. They even state "Dolby Atmos" which is wrong. If anything it should just be called Atmos for Apple streaming. As its only 768 kbps with Joint Object Coding. They pay for the licensing name but its nowhere near the actual audio. So inferior to the full losless track which can peak to over 8000kbps for this title.
The streaming video bitrate is usually around one third of the 4K bluray. For heavy bitrate scenes you may see pixelation or banding etc on Apple.
They still release physical media all the time, even though its not as popular these days.

Not keen on not being a physical copy but great trilogy so a thumbs up from me.

I have so many copies of the trilogy on dvd (4) , bluray (2) and 4K…. I don't specifically NEED another copy…. but necause its digital, sure I'll bite!

Or you could not buy something you don't need and save $10.

You can do that? 🤔

But, this is Ozbargain…

Where we try to save money. The best savings are had from purchases not made.

Can't you just download on torrents?

Hell he could rip his own copies.

Essentially what I do and have done since 2005 (dvdshrink, dvdfab, makemkv tools of choice). Started doing this after my dvd player wrecked a few discs that were hard to find and replace. I do lossless copies then I'll rip them for other purposes (mini versions to watch on tablets etc).
But I still purchase streaming versions of movies for collection sake. Have got a few titles from the past few years (movies and tv series).

You can borrow the DVDs from your local library too…
I already have these on VHS, so can't justify this deal…

did you get the VHS copy 10 years ago that was a case with the Blurays in it? they are so awesome.

$9.99 (to Buy)
'Buy' is a loose word here…

hire is more like it hey?

Or spend $0 for the same, by sailing the high seas 🏴☠️

This is counterproductive. Everyone says that "if movies were cheaper nobody would've bothered to pirate them", then you recommend the high seas when Apple sells (or indefinitely streams) 3 great movies for $10.

Price isn't the issue. DRM is.

The comment I was replying doesn't agree with you:
Or spend $0 for the same […]

Exactly, we shouldn't normalize ownership becoming renting. Buying != Licensing. If there's no DRM, I have far less of a concern.

Until they can make one service to provide streaming to all or most content indefinetly, the high seas is the only reasonable solution. The current scattering of stremaing services is just corporations being greedy af, so I dont care if Apple puts up a movie for cheap to be honest, the issue remains and personally Ill be keep doing what Im doing until there's a a Spotify of movies and shows.

2 great movies and 1 okay

Great Scott what a deal.

This is heavy.

What? people cant wait for the monthly re runs on Channel 10?
Where's your bargain sense
🤣

Y'argh 🏴☠️🦜

4K vs 480i on 10 /s

Na…. $9 vs $0 on 10 🤣

Channel 10? Is that a perfume?

Do you come from the future; a future where grammar is less important?

great scott! that got heavy real quick!

REAL DEBRID OR GTFO

As a purist I would hate different actors and tones

lol…original comment was such a hit you did PART II?
Why not make it a TRILOGY!
IIRC, the original trilogy had much less offensive language…
EDIT: FYI it was a trilogy - the third part was disappointing - pretty much the same as the sequel but straight-to-pm, direct to my inbox :(

I bought the blue ray years ago and it's somewhere in a box so I'm justified in using Stremio for it.

Yes apple do delete films or books from their service. Its really a case of buying your trust and then removing. Better to just buy a cheap bluray version or find in other means. I figure Ive already spent lots on multiple films so other means are just fine, especially if you own the bluray.

The BTTF Musical, on in Sydney right now, is AMAZING. Really really rate it. Will have you smiling the whole time. And afterwards. Super fun night out.

yeah i flew down to sydney to see it, it was amazingly awesome, i hope they come up to Brisbane!!!

How awesome are all the car scenes. Maybe I have been living in the dark ages, but I couldn't believe all the special effects and how immersive the whole thing was. And I am not usually a huge fan of musicals.

yeah i been telling people its more of a play than a musical as it was more acting lines then sing songs. its was the right amount for my liking. i loved the car scenes but the one that made it was the locker fight scene with the fluro tube… very brilliant! as for the special effect ive seen it onboard the Cruise ships so ive seen it before but did you know the Back to the Future musical is also onboard the Icon of the Seas Royal Caribbean cruise ship!

I went to the movies to see them. I bought the VHS tapes. I upgraded to DVD then I bought Blu-ray. All gone to charity shops. Must have spent $300 or more to buy the same thing. Today I have a nas with an illegal download copy of these great movies. I am such a pirate!

No one has pointed out its BTTF day?

Good catch! It's the 40th anniversary!

It's rereleasing in IMAX next month.

ummm yeap, i did as im a huge fan i knew that was the point of it…

As the saying goes: "if buying isn't owning, then piracy isn't stealing".
But hey, You wouldn't download a car… would you?Upvoted because this is my favorite trilogy of all time, and this deal lets more people experience it.

Obligatory reminder that you are only "buying" an indefinite streaming rental on services like this
