    RISC is gonna change everything…

      And it did!

Kinda. x86 is still alive and kicking, but that’s mostly because of backwards compatibility expectations that we have gotten from Windows’ exceptional legacy of supporting software from DECADES ago with little to no modification.
Also since x86 (especially x86-64, otherwise known as AMD64) is a dual-licensed duopoly, it at least means there is a common device tree and UEFI that can be used to run ANY operating system built for this architecture, as well as common drivers for everything.
Which is unlike modern RISC architectures where every processor can have its own device tree and doesn’t have to adhere to ALL the standards, meaning a lot of the chips are further locked-down on the CPU level due to the lack of drivers, device trees and BIOS/UEFI functionality.

        • I'm pretty sure mobile phones using the low powered RISC processors has changed everything from 1995 when the movie release. I'm not sure x86 would have made for good smart phones with its power consumption.

The pool on the roof must have a leak.

The hackers in the movie Hackers wouldn't tolerate ads in a movie.

    • I actually thought this was ad free until I read the comments.

it's a weird area now though, since ad tier is a thing now. even Primevideo has ads now unless you pay to remove. 😪

      • If you have a good ad blocker it's probably ad free actually. I paid to get rid if the ads on prime video too, I freaking hate ads.

      Brave browser with automatic adblock

Everyone had some variation of acidburn or zero cool as their handle back then.

I can't believe this movie came out 30 years ago and I still haven't seen it yet.

    • +11

      Now's your chance! It's a classic.

Maybe… 6.2/10 on IMDb doesn't scream "great movie" to me.

        • +1

          It's so bad, its good.

        • +5

You watch movies based on IMDB ratings?

          • +2

@smartazz104: Not solely based on IMDb, but it is a consideration for sure.

        • +1

          Fisher Stevens rides a skateboard!

Nobody needs more than 4MB of RAM!

I feel this is one movie we all should have impunity from pirating for the ad free version.

    • not a feeling man it's a fact

    Dvd available?

Buckaroo Banzai brings back some memories. Such a niche flick with schlock that only seems to get better with age. Plus, it’s got the best ever end titles theme music.

      • Plus, it’s got the best ever end titles theme music

Agree. I rewatched the credits many times as a kid from a VHS tape recording because I loved the music so much.

Some great movies in that list - how did you find them?

      • +1

someone posted a deal on ozb with a massive list, and I think a couple comments also posted a massive list.

search back some other youtube movies deals you will find it. it was recent.

    • Navy Seals lol. I remember as a teenager really enjoying that. I suspect it hasn't aged well with Charlie Sheen's acting.

      • does it have steven seagal in it too?? I watched a old movie with him in it. it was hilarious. Under Siege. OH theres a Under Siege 2 definitely going on my list.

I want to also try some of his goofy named movies like "Glimmer man".

  • +3

I think it's on Prime as well (don't know which one has more ads these days).
Hackers 2 is a little more realistic and based on Kevin Mitnick if any of you still remember him.
This is a cult classic for sure though.

I remember wanting to be a l33t h@x0r so bad after watching this movie. I wonder how many kids got punked watching this movie thinking hacking is as cool as how the movie made it out to be lol

    • +1

Haha yea there were no Angelina Jolies running around in the hacking circles back then that's for sure… kind of still the case

Tenacious D The Pick of Destiny is free on SBS demand atm, great movie and only normally available on DVD

  • If you start watching Hackers at 10:26:35pm on New Year's eve you'll be able to hear Zero Cool yell "Hack The Planet!" out of the back of a cop car at midnight.
