Australian souvenirs? (+ Cheap 1-way flights to HK?)

Hey guys,

So I'm planning on flying back to Hong Kong for the Chinese New Year which is around January. I'm not very good with picking out souvenirs so maybe some of you guys can help? What are some things (eg. snacks, confectionary, etc) that I might be able to find only in Australia? Never mind Marmite as we can get some back in HK.

Also.. Are there any cheap places to buy keychains/t-shirts around Melbourne?

Any suggestions would be cool! Also, I'm currently looking for cheap one-way flights to Hong Kong from Melbourne between January 16-20… if anyone knows where I can find the best deals, let me know! I'm really just out for the cheapest tickets that include luggage.

Thanks in advance!

tm tams (the ones in hk taste different) aussie made ones are better
shapes hk people seem to like it
    minties
instant coffee (the ones in packets for mocca etc)
these are the things I usually get back to hk

    • didnt know the tim tams tasted different! cool.

    • milk powder. your relatives will love you.

Hong Kong, not Mainland China. We got too much milk powder around train stations.

        • fish oil/multi vit tabs?

    violet crumble
Whittakers slab chocolates (yes, its NZ)
    Fruit Tingles

  • i think snickers as well!

  • This is what I usually take to reloes in HK when I visit:

Macadamias tend to be cheaper here
Fresh fruits, particularly the ones in season here like mangoes. Lychees/Longans are also good for CNY
Tim Tams - they don't get as wide a variety as we do
And funnily enough, Baklava as Turkish food isn't easy to find in HK

  • Also.. Are there any cheap places to buy keychains/t-shirts around Melbourne?

In city there is a store in swanston st , past maccas towards Myers on the LHS just before EB games

here is map, if something else is closer to you

    • Thank you! Checked them out today and got a whole bunch of tiny souvenirs for my younger cousins.

  • singapore airlines have a cheap sale to hk

  • Australian dried mango. Get a 1KG bag for around $70.
These are superior to the thai ones which are soaked in sugar and have no mango taste at all. The Australian ones are flat, whereas the ones soaked in sugar are in fat strips.

    • Cool, Ive got relatives who actually want those! Thanks

    • Philippine ones are the best- known in hk, and a lot cheaper in hk too

7D mango (filo brand) is much nicer than our dried mango imo

Raw gourmet honey (not blends) and Granuled/Powdered Royal Jelly; hard cheeses, kangaroo jerkies , macademia nuts, mix bush nuts and local beer; essential oils, sheepskin products, leather belts, spotted gum chopping boards, carved wood souvenirs; vitamins and supplements (like shark liver oil); Paw Paw ointment, Lanolin or Emu moisturisers; soft noughats, local chocolates like Haighs. Some golfers might like the leather barmah hats, I know people who bought these for their dads and uncles. And those kangaroo scrotum coin pouches, I think they are gross but some gamblers seem to like them.

Yeah, I think they're absolutely disgusting but there are people who specifically asks for them. Whatever float their boats I suppose.

    Australian souvenir….Ozbargain T-shirt ;)

  • there are souvenir shops on swanston street if you prefer cbd.

the one I'd recommend is called Souvenirs Direct, its at harbour town docklands, cheap as hell, better quality items, much more extensive collection than the shops on swanston st.

  • go to Victoria Market and try to bargain over there if you gonna buy in bulk, you can get like fridge magnet, key chain, boomerang, etc. But most souvenirs and stuff in the world are made in China anyway.
Get something authentic like Coles branded/ Woolies branded confectionery that says "Made in Australia" will do :P

    • You can still get a few Australian made things including Australian animal dolls, opal, wooden bookmarks/rulers, cloths pins, boomerangs and boomerang fridge magnet etc

  • I heard Jurlique skin care products are cheaper to get here than in HK.
Can buy from David Jones online store with the coupon codes.

  • Tim tams and shapes when they're on special for $2 each (no I don't work for arnotts). They're light to carry and since they're packaged food you won't have problems with most countries that may have restrictions on some food items. Everyone I gave them to my friends overseas they said they love it. Either that or they're lying haha.

seems no one answer your one-way ticket question

Best bet for one-way is to fly with budget airline…. standard airline like Cathay/Singapore/Qantas airline will charge you premium for flying oneway..

Air Asia - stop over at KL, $446 (not include baggage yet)
Jetstar - stop over at Sing, $460 (not include baggage)

or you can try Scoot -> Sing then fly whatever you like from Sing

I would get the following items for friends/family in HK

    • Red Rock Deli chips , taste much much better than HK chips
    • Honey
    • Season fruit, at this time of year would be Mango/Cherries etc
    • Skincare product?
  • I bought a box of starburst two headed anacondas (1kg?) from costco a few years back and my HK colleagues loved them.

One way tickets are quite pricey with the major airlines. Cheaper to fly via jestar or air Asia with prebooked luggage if you dont mind the stop over.

Candy esp. Cadbury from 'Discount Lollies Store'. And tourist things from that Arthur something warehouse underground on Swanston.
