    Thanks

      interchangable lens
      4/3's sensor size
      decent glass

      • +8

        Actually aps-c sensor size

    • DSLR quality.
Tiltable flash (if same as F3)
Incredible picture and film quality in a compact camera. Better than the Nex 5 I have IMO due to inbuilt flash and ability to flip screen. Get a little SIGMA 30mm or 19mm and it is brilliant.

      • Actually, other than being smaller, not as good as the F3 (previous model) from all accounts.

Search for reviews online. A mountain of reviews out there. In short its good bang for buck interms of features, quality of photo, flexibility and size. Sony has been making this series for years and they lead IMO atm.

It beats the crap out of all other mirrorless crap other companies have released. Especially with it's larger APS-C size sensor. Most other mirrorless use smaller sensor. Larger sensor = more light captured = better image quality.

At this price bracket its offering you alot for little money.

      • yeap, great low light performances, beats all smaller sensor cameras and all mobile phone cameras by miles.

  • anyone found stock in store?

    • Most stock in NSW are all display model.

Despite its impressive quality picture and built-in flash and so on, there are few minuses which made me to think twice.

      • 3N body is made of plastic, while 5T and 6 are made of metal, I tried the display model. THe 3N feel a bit flimsy, while 5T and 6 by miles are more stable compare especially with bigger lenses.

      • 3N LCD CAN do selfie, BUT can NOT tilt downward facing, making it useless to use above your head if you want to shoot new year fireworks in the thousand people crowds, unless ur the tallest person in the crowds. 5T and 6 can tilt downward, though 6 can't do selfie.

      • 3N has only 4FPS shooting, while 5T and 6 has 8 and 10 or something like that, its quite slow compare to other mirrorless cam with 10 FPS.

      • No Wi-Fi, NO Touchscreen. Buttons are pretty much basic like P&S cam, no dial for mode or control. So if you want to use manual control, a bit fiddly compare to 5t and 6.

      • Made in Thailand, although SOny claims the QC still the same as made in Japan. But my 3 year old P&S Cybershot was made in Japan and still rocks.

  • How does this compare to the Sony Rx100 series 1?

    • I think it's comparable. Same advice as above, check out reviews online from people much much much more knowledgeable than us.

RX100 is much smaller tho, fixed lens. Different class.

That's like comparing an echo/yaris to a camry in car terms

      • +1

NEX has much larger sensor than RX-100. Much better low noise performance. But due to the larger sensor.. good lenses can't really be made tiny (the pancake tiny ones are rubbish quality). The stock 16-50mm lense for the NEX isn't very good either, but for the price and size its probably as good as its going to get.

The amazing thing about the NEX-3N is that with a small good quality prime lense like the Sigma 19mm, you get a setup weighing about 400 grams total for around $450 that would have a sensor/lense-quality combo that would rival any camera out there thats not a full frame.

        • This new kit lens is an off hand joke in the pro community, while they praised Sony for making it small, the image quality unaltered by camera's post processing was the new poster boy of bad kit lens.

However, thanks to the computer chips doing magic, non-pro users wouldn't complain much until they learn enough on how to spot the problem of the lens.

        • Fairly high return rates too :( Since it's powered focus and zoom the motor just dies and won't even extend.

        • Links to the motor problems please? I'm thinking about buying the 3N but there are plenty of alternatives so don't want inherent problems showing up a couple of years on.

You get a mirrorless so you can swap the lens, so its easily remedied. If concerned, find a NEX-F3 and buy it with the older and arguably better 18-55 lens.

My comment cimes from my experience of buy and sell Nex gear on the side, and have seen/heard of lots of dead ones atleast compared to older 18-55.

        • Thanks. I thought I'd read that the 18-55mm was not very good but have now seen a review which discusses the results. Similar issues to the new compact lens but most are well handled by the camera. Hardly Normal (don't like Gerry Harvey so I'll look for a pricematch) has the F3 for the same price as the 3N and Wirecutter suggests it's a better buy so worth a look.

    • RX 100 is the ultimate compact travel camera
RX 10 is the ultimate 4K video travel camera

NEX-3 series is the bang for the $ ILDC series

It is so matured now, it leaves EOS-M and M43 to dust in image quality and lens selection so on… :)

RX-100 charge too much for that Carl Zeiss Lens it has

      • Good summary.

I'd go for a NEX 5N/R/T or 6. But a 3 at this price is very good. I buy and sell cameras on the side…so trust me (put on flame retarding clothes well, you don't have to trust me).

        • that bloody small but crappy lens calls for 200 on Ebay!

If I don't have the mighty Nex-5N, I would surely get this.

      • I wouldn't really call the RX10 a "4K" camera — it might have full pixel readout, but the end result is still 1080p video. A good camera for video, though, by most accounts.

      • Would you say the RX 100 is better than the Samsung NX300? Apart from image stabilisation which the NX doesn't have, what makes it the 'ultimate compact travel camera'?

        • +1

          The NX300 isn't a compact camera.

The RX100 is the size of a pack of cards. I just bought one today at JB for $495 (price match Harvey Norman that has 0 stock). The RX100 is also widely regarded as the best compact camera on the market. It also has a bright 1.8 ~28mm to ~100mm lens.

If only Sony would release a firmware that would allow it to shoot in 24/25/30/50/60 rather than a forced PAL or NTSC model then it would be the IMO best bang for buck camera on the market.

        • Yeah you're right, it's a Compact system Camera. My bad!!

        • @alittlelewd, are you able to post your receipt for the Rx100, I want to get one but can't find anywhere near that price. I look in HN website, did not list rx100. Many thanks.

  • Good price, cheaper than Kogan. If only my EOS 550D was to pack it in, but after 40k clicks it is still going strong (despite a design shutter count of 30k).

What kind of shutter count are the Sony's built to last for?

    • how to check shutter count on the NEX ?

      • don't think you can check shutter count with NEX cameras.

      • +1

As long as they number the photos in sequence you could work it out that way. The EOS resets to 0 after 9999, but I rename the files to keep them unique. Right now I am up to 42965.

  • Nice camera with APS-C.

    I've got a NEX-5T, beautiful.

  • buggar.

Bought this late October just befor holiday from Kogan for a bit over $430 inc shipping.

Very good camera. Quite small, easy to handle and so far been very happy with the pictures it takes.

Part of me still wishes I'd bought the DSC-QX100. Makes sharing pictures so much easier when ya out and about.

    • +4

If you've had it for a holiday that sure is worth the $40 you paid for that privilege. Don't dwell on it, enjoy the pictures!

  • I have the NEX-5R and I love it — for $381, if the NEX-3N is even half as good it's a fantastic deal.

  • This or Canon 600/650D or Nikon D3100/D3200?

  • @Stix: If you need bulk/big hands, then dslr. All other reasons point towards mirrorless. :p. I suggest looking at 5R or 6 for comparable performance.

  • Out of stock..(expired?)!!!
