  • 16GB is too little memory for modern uses. A few photos, movies, songs, apps, games and it is full. Better for users to upgrade to 32GB or 64Gb model if they can and save themselves grief later.

    • +4

Unfortunately, that is the main reason they aren't discounting 32/64 versions….

    • Yeah but when it costs $130 for 16gb more, you kinda have to think about how much more memory you could get on your hard drive (2tb for $99) for a cheaper price. Just gotta keep cut/pasting photos/videos to the harddrive as they take up heaps of room, I'm sure ozbargainers would prefer this method

    • +1

It's good to have larger storage of course. But you really don't need to keep all pictures, videos, musics on your mobile all the time. Move your pictures to Dropbox or other "cloud" provider, music can be fixed by spotify/radio etc.

      • +2

Cloud storage isn't very convenient for large video files when you're on holiday and want a selection of movies and tv shows to choose from for the long plane flight + waiting in airports.

        • I'd rather take a tablet on a long flight to watch movies rather than a small iPhone

  • +1

This is good deal for someone want the 16g .

  • +1

the S stands for suckers doesnt it?

  • +6

wow, a 16gb phone for $809 is cheap??

get with it, it cost them 200$ to make that phone.

    • +9

I agree with your $809 not being cheap part. But as for the second sentence, the $200 is probably just the cost to make the phone, but that doesn't count all the R&D, advertising, etc etc that Apple need to do to make the iPhone 5S sell well and be in demand. If you ask me it's still overpriced but unlike Android phones, the iPhones don't devalue quickly.

I bought a Note 3 outright for around ~$700 on launch day. I'd be happy if I got half of that for selling it 6 months from now because of the pletora of better and more powerful Android devices coming out every 2-3 months. Whereas the iPhone 5S will be the only latest iPhone for a full year. You buy that for $809 today and you'll likely still be able to get 550-600 for it 6-9 months from now. This is a big selling point. If you're an iPhone owner, you can rest easy that you have the latest and greatest for a year. Whereas I bought a Note 3 and a month later I have Nexus 5 envy.

      • You can use the same methodology with Android phones.

Only one Nexus comes out each year and retains its value very well. Samsung and HTC phones are also starting to hold greater value (post S2).

    • because it's free for shipping, R&D and marketing…

      • ok, lets chuck $100 in for R&D and marketing and anything else.

        thats still a $500+ profit.

        • +2

Apple as a company makes ~37% gross profit and ~20% net. Maybe the bill of materials on a 5S is $200, but you'd need a lot more data, and would have to qualify the numbers heavily, before making any credible assertion about their net profit per phone.

Called Apple George Street (NSW) and directed them to the Harvery Norman page. The sale rep spoke with his supervisor and said that they will price match it. If you want this phone and good customer service, give you local apple store a call. In my experience they are much more polite than Harvery Norman staff.

My local Harvey Norman store is 84 O’Riordan Street, Alexandria. They've been fined fined for not accepting warranty claims.

    • Wow u were lucky… Apple as a rule never price match

      • Wow u were lucky… Apple as a rule never price match

In my experience, Apple Stores in Australia have always been willing to price match other local stores — I've done it a few times over the past few years. Although their pricematching limit is supposedly 15% off according to a manager of the Sydney store when I attempted to get 20% off deal on a MBP matched last year.

    • Called in apple store perth for price match. They agreed to price match harvey 809 as long as they still have stock.

Went to the store and had to wait as they do some research. Then told that they can't do it and have to get it from harvey instead.

      What a waste of time!

      • +2

Lol, just buy it from the source… Again, I don't see why people price match when u can just get it from the source.

        • The source is 20 minutes drive, while apple store is a minute walk.

  • Definitely good price.. Blame apple for setting the price high but this is a good deal.

Not to many people can afford iPhones unfortunately. Most well off people have them in my opinion or love to waste money.

    • +5

are we living in the same world? Get on the street and have a look around.

      • +5

Centrelink line…. everyone lodging their forms… everyone has an iphone

        • +1

that means rich people are on dole.

  • +2

Apple should set the price higher so less bums will have one on the train.

    • +11

Those bums you see are ordinary people who have spent most of their income on expensive iPhone contracts and can therefore only afford to wear clothes from Rivers.

  • +4

The Iphone is a designer brand phone it ain't cheap! To many people just throwing their entire savings on it, that explains why, so many are broke after, they cant even afford it, they just have to buy it! its like a plague that has gone so wrong.

  • +1

My mate who works at Harvey Norman Chadstone said these are grey imported in bulk by HN #justsaying

  • +4

Apple tax and apple fan boys. I stay away.

a phone is a phone. If im going to pay that much for other capabilities, I'll get a small laptop.. My 2cents… Depends on your needs and what works for you. Horses for courses

    • -removed-

    • +2

If I could find a laptop that fits in my pocket and has gps functionality, then I'll consider that laptop. lol But you are right, its horses for courses. Never thought a laptop would be compared to mobile phones. :)

      • You can buy a cheap Android phone has GPS functionality and fit in any pocket for $100-$150. Why need to pay $809~ for a smart phone?

The Iphone 5s only cost $199 to make and you're paying $610 for the Apple brand.

Is it really worth it? No!!!!!

    • +2

      I stay away.

So why have you even come here to comment? No apps to play with?

      • +4

Nope. What can be better than dissing the Apple fanbois. No app can give that much joy.

        • Sorry forgot that some Kiddies get joy out of bullying.

Maybe they need to get out in the real world rather than sit behind their keyboard.

Problem is they forget that others make purchases for different reasons.

        • +2

Think you are confusing sledging with bullying.

        • -2

Sorry forgot that some Kiddies get joy out of bullying

          LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

Now it's 'bullying' to point out flaws in fanboism. HILARIOUS!

        • +2

          @ryang

Fanboism cuts both ways, but a fanbois wont acknowledge that will they?

Sledging - insulting or verbally intimidating.
Bullying - intimidate, or aggressively to impose domination over others

Maybe bullying is a little over the top compared to sledging.

The point is this is a site to share bargains not to intimidate others.

Dont like iphone, fair enough, but its ok to respect that others might like to here about a bargain for their choice without others constantly deriding their choice.

Making this site unpleasant for others doesnt help promote participation and sharing of deals for everyone.

          See example here.

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/126054

        • Yeah, it gets a bit old when any post on an Apple deal automatically gets threadjacked by superior people who earnestly go about telling potential Apple buyers how cheap Android/Windows/whatever is.

If the deal says "iPhone" and not "Android" – or vice versa – then FFS keep it on topic, folks. Grow up.

  • All the QLD sites showing up now are out of stock :)

  • +3

$809 !!! Tell him his dreaming!

  • +2

I have a iphone 5, good phone but hate the price tag, luckily it was a gift.even plans are outrageous, but most think its so cheap even when cost a arm and a leg, $1000 is a lot of money. Could do a lot more with that like investment.

    • I would be really frustrated if someone bought me an iphone 5s or similarly overhyped, overpriced, compatibility lacking, piece of junk marketing!

I returned a couple things last Christmas because family members had been sucked in to believing this seasons product x that their loved one wanted, was the most expensive and hyped, yet least functional and open to software or hardware changes. Thats the truth but it wasnt laid out in terms of where the parts come from, the costs, functionality, value, or anything real… JUST MOST WANTED/MUST HAVE!

  • Did any get this today? I checked the local had stock after 5:30, now out of stock, doesn't make sense!

  • Was at HN QV store in Melbourne at 8:30pm, salesman said they had stock of all 3 colours.
    Bought a silver one myself.

    • +2

      Congratulations

  • +1

This or get 2x nexus 5?

    • you would also have gotten 2x $100 google play gift cards if youd ordered the 2x Nexus a week or so ago..

  • +1

You pretty much know you're getting ripped off with the iPhone when Apple can sell a same(better) spec'd device - the iPad Mini Retina 16gb for under $500.

    • It's more difficult to pack them into a smaller device from engineering point of view.

        • +1

So is it free to do researching/marketing/shipping/hiring good engineers?
Think how much you spend in a restaurant, did you ever calculate how much the raw material worth? It must be a rip-off too.

Yes, apple has very high margin, and we all know it, but $200, you really think that's how much apple spend to build it?

        • Sunk costs - if apple could make $1 per unit they would still do it.

It just so happens they can make $600+ ,but come on dude you have to put it in perspective, the iPads have a greater cost but are cheaper and actually offer an OK proposition as far as their hardware is concerned.

But with the iPhone you are getting rorted because Apple can, there is nothing wrong with Apple doing it… but its the reality.

You can talk about R&D costs - but on the flip side take into account iTunes, Accessories, Add-ons such as Applecare, - iDevices create additional revenue/ all companies do.

    • Works both ways though, you're not going to be able to sell the iPad Mini Retina for $550-600 a year down the track, whereas you can with the iPhone. Personally can't see why people complain so much about an iPhone costing ~$900, I upgrade every year and am only about $300-350 out of pocket each year after the initial investment. Considering it's indisputably the most important as well as used device on me it's hardly a big deal.

      • You upgrade every year? Lol. Don't know if I'm jealous or feeling sorry for you. Jokes, as long as you like it, then money is well spent.

Same with these iPhones and stuff, I love Apple products, especially the iPhone. People often make fun of me for not getting something like the Nexus 5 which has similar specs to the iPhone 5S/5, at half the price.

But as long as my purchases, whether technically worth it or not in price, is able to make me happy - then there is no real loss.

        • You upgrade every year?

Actually if you read a number of the posts on phones on Ozbargain, you will find Android, iphone and Windows uses claiming to do the same or even less…

  • +1

Ugh I can afford this and I want it, but ethically I Can't . My iPhone 4 still works

  • +2

    Only?

  • That is something I will never understand, it is just utter idiotic to upgrade every year or to much cash? There is nothing literally needed on the iphone, maybe a few games for a new iphone to run With slight better hardware. It makes sense if your contract was for a year, But If your a gamer, your better of purchasing a vita or Ds, the phone is just hopeless at it except games like angry birds.

  • +1

Not bad by Hardley Normal , they been improving lately.

  • I don't understand how Apple makes money anymore. I mean $809!! Nexus 5 is $399 and a Galaxy S3 is $359 (currently), but yeh why not pay over twice the amount just for apple… :S

    • Because many people drop $80/month on a contract. I doubt many people are buying these phones outright, and some people even think they are actually getting their iphones for free, even though the costs are added to their plans. :D I don't understand why people don't buy their phones outright and get one of the unlimited prepaid plans if need be and possibly save half their money. :) Each to their own, you know some people probably pay more for their midrange android phone on a plan than the people buying their iphones 5s at fullprice outright. :)

  • +7

Oh, gosh. People, stop this crap about Apple products being overpriced and bla-bla-bla. Those who buy iPhones they know that there are much cheaper Android alternatives. Yet they buy them for some reasons apart from being fun boys.

This deal is about the price, not the product itself. If you can find a lower price for iPhone 5S 16BG Aus Stock, please tell us. Otherwise, stop complaining and negging, really.

    • Even comparing Apple with Apple, not Apple with Android, $800 for a 16GB iPhone is still a bit too rich.

    • I agree,

  • +3

Apple haters are always gonna hate…

While it isn't a "great" price for a phone, it is a "great" price for AU stock of the iPhone 5s.

Once upon a time I didn't think I'd ever waste $800 on a phone… especially after spending over $1200 on a macbook air thx to amex apple statement credit & $850 on a camera from jb hifi & canon cashback promo (though these are the pre-statement credit / cashback / tourist refund scheme prices).

It is still sealed… just in case I change my mind.

Maybe I should stop looking at ozbargain. It has cost me nearly $3000… :/

  • Good price. No buy. Stop making me spend money ozb!! On to the next deal…

  • Tried price matching at perth apple store - no luck. If anyone can price match please do post it here!

    • No, perth apple store won't price match it eventhough they agreed to it over the phone :( went there yesterday. Just head to harvey directly, citiwest brach had 4 gold, 10 silver and 10 black (as of this morning). They were out of stock yesterday afternoon but got it restocked!

  • +1

Do you know if I was to get a TRS I'd have to bring the phone in it's box and packaging?

    • +1

Nope. You just have to bring the phone itself. And tax invoice obviously.

If it's over $1,000, the tax invoice must have your name and address on it.

  • -6

Why do people buy this when you can get one overseas for half the price (or less)?

iphones cost the most in australia compared to pretty much the rest of the world

    • +1

      http://www.news.com.au/technology/gadgets/how-much-does-the-…

Perhaps you should do your research before you start making up crap.

    • If you can get GST refund, its actually cheaper than US price (californian tax is 8%). Even without the tax refund, its only $10 more expensive than buying it in Hong Kong. So its a good deal.

What makes apple product so overpriced is the demand for it and people still buy it because of the luxurious feeling. Its the same case as women buying a Gucci handbag or Louboutin shoes.

  • +1

Loads still in stock at HN Auburn (not the HN @ Domayne Auburn)

  • thanks OP. got 1 on saturday. DA sales men didn't even know it was on sale on their own website.

  • -1

Or you can buy a decent phone, like a HTC One for less!
