Bringing electronics from abroad

Hey guys.
I am going on vacation abroad in a couple of months and am planning to buy some electronics appliances from abroad (e.g. led tv, stand mixer and probably a few more things).
My only concern is import duties on these things. Can anyone tell me is it worth bringing these items home from abroad as checked in baggage? We have about 100kilos of luggage and we aren't taking much with us so that is not a problem. Only problem is taxes at the airport when coming back.

Anybody know what is the maximum (if at all) value of electronics or other stuff can we bring into Australia without paying any duties.

Cheers.

  • Isn`t it $1000 per person, similar to the amount for postage?BUT I am not sure -best is to check with customs BEFORE you go to avoid any problems and fuss.

Beware of power supply & plug differences.

  • The small stuff just pack into your check in, ditch the packaging….not sure about big stuff. I brought back some photographic gear from HK last time I was there…

  • Thanks guys. I am aware of power supply and plug difference. Will only be bringing 240V equipment and plenty of plug adapters.

  • Your list seems to be a little strange - LED TV?

Not sure if it is still true, but some items used to require an approved power supply before they can be imported.
Also can it receive our broadcasts (even with 240V)
Is it really worthwhile given no warranty or parts maybe different
Is it that much cheaper from OS. On a recent trip to out of curiosity indonesia checked prices and they werent too much different.

Beware of luggage weight, TV big risk in damage, make sure its PAL and not NTSC, can combine the $900 each if couple.

Been going to HKG for years best place to buy electronics is Mongkok., exit E2 from MTR go in side entrance of Body Shop take lift on 16th floor Global Audio & Visual, be prepared to be blown away!. Few years ago purchased a Marantz receiver there, in OZ street price was $1700 paid AUD$700, weight was 22kg, had enough flight allowance.
