  • Trying to figure out if this is an OK deal or a good deal (I'm currently in the market for an msata drive)

Crucial m500 msata of similar speed is similarly priced for the 480gb (or cheaper for the 240) and can be picked up locally [Note the capacity is actually the same I believe: Crucial use GB = 1024MB, MB = 1024KB, etc.]

So looks like reasonable pricing but I'm not sure it's a bargain.

For the 256 I'm wondering if I'm better off getting the faster Plextor m5m locally (only $17 more, $8 after shipping this Samsung). That's probably better for me.

    • I'm trying to figure out actual formatted capacity as well. Please provide your source showing that Crucial don't use the same method as all other manufacturers. i.e. 1GB = 1000MB.

  • Not sure of the 256, but the formatted capacity of my 512GB is 477GB in Windows 7.

    • This source says formatted capacity of 447.13GB for the Crucial M500 480GB.

Another source also says the Samsung PM841 512GB mSATA is 477GB formatted. (The PM841 is the previous model to the PM851 being sold here).

So roughly that's 30GB or 7% more formatted storage capacity in a 512GB drive versus 480GB.
