good price on a decent ssd, 7250MB/s and runs pretty cool, it is dramless tho.
great for gaming and ps5 upgrades.

damn, i thought it will be cool enough cause many recommended these for laptops.
At last we are getting a return of discounted SSDs.
It's been years, remember the P41's selling in 2023:
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/821848Feels like a long time ago.
What the, I thought that deal was only 6 months ago cries
Yeah the memory cartel realized they could be making more money lmao
In 2023 I got my 980 pro with heatsink for $143.
Anyone know of any good external enclosures for these?
Look for ones that use either a JHL7440 chipset from Acasis, Orico, or Trebleet (these offer the best balance of speed/power draw/thermals but are slightly more expensive) or the ASM2464PD chipset from any of the aforementioned brands as well as Satechi/Maiwo/OWC/Orico/Jeyi (these cost about 2/3rds of what the JMicron-based enclosures do, and can run slightly faster, but they get much hotter and draw more power both active and while idle).
With current AUS power prices, depending on how often you plan to use the SSD - if you expect it to serve as a backup drive/will unplug it when not in use the ASMedia options are fine, but if you want to leave it plugged into a Mac Mini for semi-permanent external expanded storage the JMicron-chip will save you money in the long run (either way probably a good idea to get an enclosure with an active fan).*If your port/s can support 40gb. Ie thunderbolt port
Does it has or comes with a heatsink?
no
Thanks mate. So looks like won't be a good option to upgrade PS5 storage. Any good and cheaper recommendations for that?
sorry I can’t help you i don’t really know much about ssd’s. I have a 980 pro 2tb that i got for $140 like 2 years ago, it has a heatsink too but that deal is probably rare. Waiting for gta 6 to buy the ps5 haha
you can maybe get a third party heat sink and put this in it but I don’t know if that’s worth it
A heatsink costs like $5 from AliExpress.
Perfectly fine for ps5 storage. I got a 980 evo without a headsink and used to for about a year before buying a heatsink off amazon for about $10. Takes 2 minutes to install.
@Qwertyub: 980 Evo isn't a thing, but yeah I think you can get away fine with a cool enough drive without a heatsink in ps5.
you can get generic heatsinks in amazon (i use this on my ps5 with my 4Tb 1x SN850).
Decent price for a reliable and reputable 2tb gen 4.
Known firmware issues with this model.
Would I need to get a heatsink for a desktop pc? Thanks
Yes and your motherboard would have come with one as well. Using it as bootup drive?
Also, share your motherboard model if you know.
Thanks mate. It’s an Asus TUF gaming x570. I’m currently using a 6 year old 500gb ssd as the boot up but I want to switch to something like this as the boot up to speed things up. Would this be a good option as a boot up drive plus a couple of games?
u really wont a dram drive for thhe boot drive since it does a lot of small writes
It won't speed up boots or gaming - these are two things that barely change between the fastest and slowest drives - unless your existing drive is some prehistoric model.
@Rode: How full is your 500GB drive ? Many drives slow down dramatically as they approach full - one trick is to shrink the main partition down by 30GB or so, and leave that 30GB unformatted - so even if you fill the drive to 99% full, it'll still have that 30GB of space to keep performance up 👌 Obviously you're wasting 30GB of space to do this though…
@Nom: I’ll have to check but I think it’s pretty full, <30gb left. Recently each boot up does a scan of the drive as well making it slow to boot. I’ve found this to be index issues so that’s why I thought I needed a new drive in case things get corrupted. So I think it’s two problems, need to free up space and I’ll need to repair the index issues.
Would this be suitable for second drive to store gsmes library?
Yes
DRAM is needed for external SSD enclosures for extending the lifespan of the drive. These however should be fine for desktop use.
I've only got one m.2 slot and it's where my system drive is. What is the best way for me to replace the current m.2 drive with this? I have 2 other HDDs which have plenty of free space.
I'm not the best person to answer this but you should be able to make a Linux bootable os thumb drive, boot into that and make an image of your first m.2 and save it to one of your HDDs, then swap your two m.2s, boot with the USB again and then flash the image to your new hard drive.
You can get USBC enclosures - so could clone from your existing C to that. Samsung Magician sofware can use that (or various freeware ones).
Assuming you're using Windows, I was in the same boat and didn't want to get nvme enclosure, so I used Clonezilla to clone my existing nvme into my internal HDD, swap to the new nvme and restore the image.
If you get boot error after restoring the image, just boot into safe mode first, then restart as normal.
It's pretty straightforward: https://clonezilla.org/clonezilla-live-doc.php or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBBxVUcci7I
How is warranty working as this comes from Amazon US? If it needs a replacement can I just go for Samsung au?
Doubt Samsung does international warranty, just return it to Amazon AU instead
Do some research with this model. Lots of known issues. Firmware problems and power issues.
Bought one in Dec and returned after a few months. Drive would suddenly crash and not be recognised by the bios. Requires a full power down (sometimes a couple of times) before it will power up the drive again. Weeks of troubleshooting etc before returning for a refund. Are you sure you aren't referring to the issues with the 990 PRO? I'm not aware of any issues with the 990 EVO Plus, which is a completely different drive (different controller, mostly different NAND, DRAM'less, different announce/launch years, and pretty much completely different tier of drive).
I have a build using MSI Pro Z890 A (https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/PRO-Z890-A-WIFI/Overview) and two of these Samsung 990 EVO Plus 2TB PCIe Gen 4 M.2s.
Faultless, crazy fast drives. Just using the built in heat sinks that the MB ships with. Never, ever get above cool as.Even when getting pounded day in, day out, on a production system getting stress tested everyday with Davinci Resolve doing tons of heavy bit lifting.
If you can stretch, consider a Samsung 9100 companion drive, as a scratch/cache drive. They're twice as fast as the already blazing Samsung 990's. Great bang for your bucks.
Also, both of these Samsung drives are not affected by the dodgy Win11 KB update that affects 'some' drives, making them disappear.
Need heatsink for ps5
