What's the best 256GB SSD to get at the moment?

I am about to get my first ever SSD drive to put into my PC. My PC is now quite old having been built in 2010 and running and AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition CPU on a Gigabyte GA-790XT-USB3 motherboard. I'm pretty sure this motherboard only supports SATA2. So which SSD drive should I look at in the 256GB size? I know it will take a performance hit due to not running SATA3, but is the Samsung Evo the best drive to go for?

Samsung Evo is a great choice. Basically however you can get whatever is cheapest.

All SSDs these days are great, Samsung, Sandisk, Intel, Plextor, Corsair, Seagate…etc.

Yes, there are performance differences, but you won't saturate it at SATA2 and either way, you won't notice it in day to day applications.

    • My 2 1TB EVO's can easily saturate SATA 2, come close to saturating SATA 3, and I damn sure notice it day to day applications. Yes there will be a difference and yes you will likely notice it.

      • Sorry, I meant all will be limited by the SATA2 interface, so all will saturate SATA2, that's my bad.

        SATA 2 = 3Gbps = 300MB/s (10 bits/byte, because of encoding), so most SSDs do saturate that.

But I don't think you can notice the difference between a fast and a slow SSD in day to day use. I sure don't.

        Yes.

Unlikely. They don't saturate for random access, only sustained reads. And sustained reads need somewhere for you to put the data.

        • Precisely. SSD to SSD. I need those sustained writes/read and all that other SSD goodness.

        • I said sustained reads, not sustained write.

        • How often do you copy massive files between SSDs, what is the point in that even?

  • I thought that the Samsung PRO 840 256GB is the best one?
It stores data longer and is slightly more faster than the other SSD's.

    • Better than an EVO on spec? Sure. Better on value? No.

  • I'm currently using a 256GB Samsung EVO 840 in my computer and it's great.
I got mine for $186 at MSY. Good value in my opinion; you may be able to find it cheaper elsewhere.
