First time Mac owner, need help with free essential programs.

I just bought a MacBook Pro and have downloaded MacKeeper but am using a trial and now it wants me to pay for it. I have always owned a PC and don't really know much about programs for Mac If anyone can help me with some essential programs that are free it would help a lot.
Looking for something like CCleaner or is that available for mac? and a antivirus.

  • Ccleaner is avaialble free on mac.

    Paid but must haves IMO:
Hyperdock is also a great buy. It lets you snap easily windows by dragging the cursor on the sides.
Boom is another worthy buy. It amplifies the speakers of your MBP without distorting it.

You don't really need an antivirus for a Macs.

Better Touch Tool lets you do what Hyperdock sounds like and it's free plus offers much much more.

Essential App for web browser use on a Macbook IMO.

    • Dammit, accidentally neged! How do I un-neg?

  • +1

    Install Homebrew

  • on top of my head, textExpander, clamXav, little snitch, VLC (cannot remember if they are all free)

  • vlc (playback media files) is free

zipeg (for zip files - also free)

    Gimp - free image editor

  • Had a look at the programs I use regularly, it's not many.

uTorrent, Senuti, VLC, iSkysoft iTube Studio, Chrome, Firefox, Excel, Word and iPhoto. Had Litte Snitch running but from memory it annoyed me, so I shut it down. I don't bother with virus protection.

  • If you're a pc person you might find keyremap4macbook a useful free program. I could never get used to a few apple key combos and the Fn key position to used this to keep my muscle memory in operation.

  • I can't see any reasons why would you need an antivirus on a Mac. There is no viruses for Mac, period.

What you can certainly do is to download some crappy software like MacKeeper, which may in fact only make you system slower. My recommendation is not to use any of there 'cleaners' and performance optimisation programs, in OS X you don't really need this.

Start from the Mac App Store (there is relevant "New to the Mac App Store" section there), download some free apps from there, so you can always keep them updated on your system:
    - iWork (Pages, Numbers, Keynote)
    - iLife (iPhoto, iMovie)
    - The Unarchiver, TextWrangler

There are certainly many decent paid apps in the Mac App Store:
    - Pixelmator - really great app, will substitute Photoshop without any problem, unless you a professional with photos. Price: $32, sometimes goes down to $16.
    - JPEGMini - try the light version and you will be amazed how can it compress JPEG files without any visible quality loss. Full price is $20.
    - Clipboard History - nice little app that keeps history of your clipboard. Price: $5.

There are some apps that you can't find in the Mac App Store:
    - VLC (great player)
    - uTorrent
    - Perian (video codecs)
    - Handbrake (video conversion)
    - official clients like Skype, Dropbox, etc.

      Ummm, what?

Ok, let me put it that way: as of today there are no existing viruses for Mac that can damage your system. Therefore, no need for an antivirus.

I get the point you are trying to make. AV for Mac is also good at preventing attacks using social engineering. An example of this is at the most basic level is spam and phishing emails/websites. Not all mac users select the product because they have researched the robust nature of the OS. Some users (not all), pick Apple because it looks pretty ;)

          Very untrue.

  • Have a look here. Great resource for free software. http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/best-free-software-m…

Transmission is better for downloading torrents than Utorrent, way faster.

Also MPlayerX is a good media player from the Mac app Store. Plays anything.

    • Lucky you if you have managed to feel download speed difference between torrent clients in Australia :)

    • MPlayerX from the App store has limited functionality and you can get the full version for free from their website, does much more!

AV is a MUST on any internet connected computer INC THE MAC

    http://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/sophos-antiv…

is the best and its FREE… I like mackeeper (was $40US is a bundle last week) but you have to pay for it and all the virus its detected have been windows ones but it does a lot of stuff and it works well now. Dont bother with apps that 'promise' to improve memory on a mac, not worth the install time IMO

  • I (politly) disagree with the bad wrap mackeeper gets, it does what it says it does, offers realtime problem solving chats and is as good as nortons on windows now but does way more…

apptrap for removing installed apps too, or uninstall from mackeeper

  • Am I the only person who actively hates VLC?
It's slow, does that silly font cache rebuilding non-sense and the Mac interface is terrible

    MPV is so much better

    • No.

Well I've never heard of anyone needing an antivirus on their mac. So I wouldn't bother with one really. Just sounds like a good way to slow down your computer unneccesarily.

I see brightaussie already covered pretty much everything.

If I had the mac it will be the codec pack, snapping windows, and a way to show the damn transfer rate in a dialogue.

  • Carbon Copy Cloner (non-App Store?), although not free anymore (though I'm sure it's possible to find previous versions that were shareware) is great for backups/clones. I use it for backing up my media drives and will use it to make extra system backups on top of Time Machine.

    I second MPlayerX and Unarchiver!

I have F.lux (non-App Store) on my laptop and desktop. It modifies the "temperature" of the screen when the sun goes down, making the colour of the screen more eye-friendly and less blinding at night. Also available for Windows & Linux and jailbroken iPhones/iPads (pre-iOS 7).

Free Memory (App Store) frees up unused RAM. There are a bunch of free apps like this one though.

If you need a powerful but free video editor, MPEGStreamclip (non-App Store) is great.

Flip Player (non-App Store) to help WMV playback.

Perian (non-App Store), a preference (unfortunately no longer supported), is a great collection of QuickTime components which allows playback of almost any file type. This WILL eventually stop working, but still seems to work for me on 10.9.

Paid app (~US$19?) Speed Download (non-App Store) is a download manager I've used for years, and integrates into Safari (if you use it) and Firefox. Not tried the integration in Chrome, if it's even possible.

I guess, of course, it depends on what you want to do. As far as MacKeeper is concerned, I'd never heard of it til now. For basic system maintenance I've only ever used the included Disk Utility for Apple preferences, and shareware app Yasu, which I use around monthly. One of the benefits of the Unix-based OSX is that a lot of system maintenance is done behind the scenes, and when the computer's sleeping. Only time in my 25+ years using Apple computers that something has gone catastrophically wrong was when I did something wrong…but then that's what backups are for!

That's enough from me…back to Buzzfeed!

    • Oops, sorry Hahuh, didn't see your URL for Perian…I guess I helped explain it a bit.

  • +1

VLC, Unarchiver, Dropbox, Handbrake, Transmission, Perian.

Don't know why so many people are recommending VLC. MPlayerX is a much better media player. You'll really notice when you play large 1080p files.

  • I am suprise no one mention "Alfred". I use it everyday.

Alfred saves you time when you search for files online or on your Mac. Be more productive with hotkeys, keywords and file actions at your fingertips.

  • Evernote/Simplenote, DayOne, Handbrake, AppCleaner, Australian Weather, BetterSnapTool, Flux, Gemini, Radium, VirtualBox, VLC/MPlayerX, Unarchiver, PicFrame, Disk Doctor

    Good paid apps included.
