  • One thing you need to check, is whether you can edit your modems settings.

I have an Apple TV and you can edit the settings on the actual unit.

With a Roku you have to adjust your modem settings. (If you have a Telstra one, you don't have this option, and therefore can't use the Roku)

My Apple TV is an ATV2 where you can jailbreak them, which allows a greater movie content.

    • Hi
I have got AVM Fritz!Box 7390 modem (Internode NBN).
I dont know how to check whether I can edit settings.
      Can you tell me please?

  • I had an Apple TV2 (jailbroken) for the past 3 years. Bought it new for $99 and just sold it second hand on eBay last week for $330 (this is not a typo). ATV2's are expensive second hand due to their ability to be jailbroken.

I sold the ATV2 and immediately bought the WD TV Live for $99 delivered from Officeworks (http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Hom…). It is better than my ATV2 in all respects, I don't know why I didn't switch earlier.

I cannot comment on a Fritz or Roku as I have never had one but I thought they were more expensive than $100?

  • I'd go a ROku or WD TV. AppleTV is fine but it doesn't do much above and beyond the others (unless you have a Mac). I have both a Roku and AppleTV and never use the latter.

  • I've got a wdtv live hooked up to my projector, great variety of codecs for playback, and flashed with wdlxtv software. Have an appletv hooked up to my bedroom tv for youtube and iview.

If I had to have one though, it'd be the current gen wdtv live which has iview on it - my old wdtv doesn't have it.

  • does your WDTV live have lag issues from when you press the remote to when the device does something? Mine is being a pain. Maybe batteries?? Speakingof batteries, AA and AAA duracell half price at COLES (Cairns) yesterday.

    • No lag on mine. And to be sure I tried with the original and a Logitech universal. Must be batteries

  • probably not what you want to hear… but…

i have been through numerous options, and in fact the BEST option i have found is a laptop connected via HDMI to the tv. this way you can stream free shit e.g. abc/sbs, download legal shit, and it's easy enough for the wife to set it up herself!

plug in a remote and run plex, or use a wireless keyboard/mouse in one, and you're set.

plus added benefit of setting up security system for days you expect parcels to be delivered
