Warning about David Jones Online & PayPal

I bought a pair of shoes from David Jones online in this deal and paid via Paypal. I rarely buy shoes online as I find it too big a risk that they won't fit, but since there is a David Jones near me I figured it would be easy enough to return them if I was unhappy, per their website:

"When you shop with David Jones, you enjoy confidence – the confidence of knowing that if you are not completely satisfied with your purchase, you can simply return it to any David Jones store and we will provide you with an exchange, refund or repair within the guidelines outlined below."

Shoes arrived and didn't fit, so I went to DJs yesterday to return them and get a refund, only to be told that online purchases made via Paypal can only be refunded with a DJs gift card.

Having since fully read their refund policy, there is a clause that states this, however it is not really made clear in all their "Shop with Confidence" spiel.

So a warning to everyone, don't use Paypal for David Jones online if you are hoping to be able to refund the purchase.

I was quite disappointed, given that the online shopping experience with them had otherwise been surprisingly good, fast delivery, well packaged etc. Def left a sour note.

Yes, hence I am highlighting this clause in their conditions, so that others do not make the same mistake of assumption that I did.

Thanks for the warning! I certainly wouldn't have expected payment method to change the outcome of obtaining a refund or not…

Keep in mind that even if you don't use PayPal: "For all other purchases, David Jones will refund using your original payment method, or, where appropriate and at David Jones’ sole discretion, on a David Jones Returns Card."

    • Indeed, though in the past I have always found that they are very good in refunding the original payment method with no questions asked, which was why I was so surprised this time.

probably because the staff can't refund paypal instore.

  • Thank you I never knew this.

  • Thanks for the heads-up.

  • Exactly the same issue. I was told they didn't know which card to refund to with PayPal. Hence the gift card. What rubbish! I said as long as I could prove my payment and could produce a card, I am entitled to a refund "not a gift card". I took it to Customer Service who were very helpful. They stressed that it was DJs policy to issue gift cards but that they would refund to my card this time.
I'll NEVER use PayPal at DJs again!! As others have said, they are normally very obliging if you present a receipt. I usually love shopping there.

Unless there is a fault in the product purchased DJ's don't have to refund at all, offering a gift card is well within their rights.

  • If you return your package by post then you would get your money back in your PayPal account instead of a gift card. Your return postage will be paid to you once they have received the package (i was told by the online staff) or you can claim your return postage amount from PayPal.

    • BD - can you confirm this is true and worked? I’ve just fallen into the trap thinking PayPal would be safer!

      • i have done it, so i know it works. I had to get my postage refunded by Paypal.

        • Awesome. Cheers

just file a dispute on paypal as soon as u ship back the item, u can get ur momey back.
DJs got this return card policy, and paypal's refund policy can overrule it.
