At least now we all know that when a travel agent tries to insist that they only make between $20 and $30 avg commission on international airfares, that they are completely full of it.

    Cheers

    • People still use travel agents?

I travel overseas frequently, and I'm sometimes forced to use a travel agent when I run up against the limitations of the booking systems of airline websites or online travel agents (OTAs).

Why I sometimes need a travel agent:

        • Pretty much all online booking systems have a limit on the number of flight legs per booking, typically only allowing 5 or 6 legs. This can prevent you from fully exploiting some fares, such as those that allow multiple "free" transfers within a region or country.
        • Some great fares don't appear on or aren't bookable through OTAs at all.
        • Airline sites generally don't allow you to combine flights with competitor carriers.
        • Online booking systems sometimes can't handle complex itineraries.
        • Online booking systems don't easily allow you to book mixed cabin itineraries (e.g. a mixture of economy/business/first class in the same booking).
    • It's usually about 3-8% if they are selling at the same price as the airline website. No commission paid on the fuel surcharge or taxes either. If it's a cheap airfare they probably are only making $20-30.

I always hate the discounts that say "up to …. off"

    • At the moment, it reads to me like -
"Up to" $200 off around the world business class airfares :)

A promised sale where we can't see if we're even saving any money doesn't belong here IMO. I'm negging this unless some actual prices are posted.

I may as well post "JB Hifi is having a boxing day sale!"

  • Can't find any bargains or flights that are $200 off, no examples posted as per rules, this is just spam. Neg until some bargains are posted instead of this wishy washy "up to" crap.

    • Deal supposedly starts on Boxing Day as per the rep's OP, but I agree with you this is wishy washy. If anything, this should probably be posted on the 26th when we can actually evaluate the deal properly — most of these "up to" travel deals turn out to be crap. :)

  • So did anyone find any actual deals yesterday?
