Excellent camera for someone looking to get into photography (at this price point).

Quite a capable video shooter too it seems. Shame that Sony archaically force segments their market to PAL and NTSC though in this day and age, but the 24p is nice.

  • I prefer the NEX 3N since it's more portable (especially with the 16-50mm lens) but the cheapest I've seen for that is $349 + shipping from Kogan so not local stock. If you're okay with the size, this is a really good price for a capable camera. I can't believe APS-C sized cameras used to be around $2000.

  • Just curious, does this camera lie in the same class as Nikon D5X00 or is it appropriate to compare it with D3X00 series?

    • neither.. A3000 is NOT a DSLR. It is just a mirrorless with DSLR bulk.
      Probably closer to D3100

    • Cheaper by 50 cents too, might be worth a neg on this deal :P

For video this also appears to be the PAL model, so if you are after more bits per frame then this would be the way to go (for youtube uploading), but not as good for slow motion as the 60p NTSC one can.

Just an FYI with Sony AVCHD cameras - their interlaced format is just a wrapper. Drop a 50/60i shot into any decent NLE and it should see it as 25/30p without the need to bob/blend deinterlace. Really depends on the program though. So remember to set your shutter values correctly depending on if you want to shoot normal or slow motion at 50/60.

  • Thanx theearth, appreciate the effort m8…and you didn't fail n e 1 :-)

This is a superb mirrorless APS-C camera. It is basically a Nex6 hidden in a dSLR body. It is better than the nex 3 or 5 in many ways, except the bulk. The grip is great. The LCD and Viewfinder are poor. But what you get is a superb 20MP camera that takes brilliant photos. Since it uses the E-mount, the E lens are more expensive, but light. Quality of the e-Lens are good. Sony has put out some Carl Zeiss lens for the e-mount but they are expensive. Bonus is that the e-mount can take almost every other manufacturer's lens (lots of adapters available) in manual mode including all your dad's legacy lens - Nikon, Canon, Zeiss, Pentax, Olly, Minolta will all work on an e-mount due to its focal length. Also this camera is VERY light, something that you'll actually carry around in your bag without feeling the weight - most dslr users have great cameras …at home

At half price, this 20MP APS-C camera is a steal (I own one). You won't get a better value dSLR if you pay double the price.

      do you work for sony?
more megapixel doesnt mean youll get better photos. the more pixels you try to cram into a sensor, the smaller each pixel has to be and therefore reduces the amount of light it can take in which then producing more noise.
what cameras cant you use other brand/legacy lenses… without adapter?
weight is a personal preference. i know many people who prefer heavier dslrs because to them it feels like a real dslr. lighter ones are usually made of plastic and some will consider that as cheap/low quality

      • Let's have 1 pixel cameras, low light get would be awesome! ;)

Yes in theory but look at the HTC One vs Lumia 920. I think most people agree that while the low light performance of the htcHTC is great, they wouldn't trade the megapixels and they can set in software a way for the Lumia to ape the ultra pixel benefits.

        Nikon

      • Just because I recommend a Sony, doesn't mean I work for Sony.
When a camera is good,I don't care who makes it.
More pixels don't mean better pics, but less pixels don't mean better pics either. Depends on how it is implemented. With more pixels, I can crop and not lose detail. Try cropping a 10MP pic and see what you get. Just google the images from this camera - the results speak for itself.

Burst framerate and LCD resolution are two notable downgrades over more expensive models but then again the price is right. Sony are normally good with sensor tech.

    Ergonomics look comfy to me.

  • Thx Op…Such a good price. I would get one if it was A mount camera as a backup for my A580…

  • I currently have a Pentax Q, is the picture quality and low light performance between that and this a3000 going round be night and day?

    • Yes. Hands down.

  • Went into Sony but they know nothing about this deal? Was it advertised anywhere else?

  • bought one, thanks OP

    • did you bought it at the price of $248 or the boxing day $289 price?
