To me,very Hard to find any stand out deals or bargains from DSE,HN ,TGG,JB,Bigw ,Myer,DJ and target at so called Boxing Day sales this year . Very disappointed.

What do you think?

It's always like this. People just automatically think everything's cheaper because it's Boxing Day despite the fact that similar or identical deals have been running all year long.

    • +2

I used to succumb to this. I would ignore all previous offers and wait for BD only to learn it would have been cheaper to buy it before. NOT ALWAYS but especially for makeup and skincare.

    • Spot on. I went shopping at harbour town a week before boxing day and some shops were offering 30% off. On boxing day, the same items were only 20% off. Same thing as last year, were I managed to get more deals before the actual boxing day.

    • +1

You can replace 'boxing day' with 'click frenzy' in this statement as well :p

  • +2

They are a waste of time, they never fail to disappoint don't know why people spend their day buying things they don't need which are not really bargains anyway. I'm going to watch the hobbit instead.

    • +10

"… people spend their day buying things they don't need …"
Sounds like what I do on Ozbargain all the time - I guess at least they usually are bargains!

      • +1

"… people spend their day buying things they don't need …"
sounds like the words of a wise man OR a quote from tyler durden in fight club :P

  • +2

I don't think for fashion this year or that year is any different to previous years, I just think with online shopping and instant comparison people more easily see what is on offer year round so they are now seeing BD offers aren't what they always thought they were.
DJs clothing discounts are exactly the same as what they were 5,7,10 years ago. The only difference is the brands (ie when they left DJs or became concessions).

  • +19

I agree with you mate - I'm just thankful that we have an active site like OzBargain where users spot and post bargain's that they've found. Everyday I religiously check the site for bargains and sales.. it gets me through the year :)

  • Yep it's the norm now and that's because for the past few yrs retail has been screwed so they needed good deals all yr to pull in those customers.
Won't see any good deals again until retail is back to good business so they won't have to do weekly deals to get us in store.

  • Similar, few items of my wish list has discount

  • I think out of all the shops target is one of the ones with some good deals, especially on games.

  • Are all the sales out now? it seems quite disappointing..

i remember buying a nice guess watch on discount from target two years ago..

The other problem with sales now, specially with Myer and DJ's etc, is that the clothes on special are, in some cases, not the regular stuff that is on the racks for the rest of the year. They bring in specially made sale merchandise, eg, the Van Husen men's shirts that are on special every BD sale.

Often I have seen a shirt or something I like at Myer, and wait until Boxing Day to see if it is on sale. When I go in, it has vanished, and replaced with other stuff. Then, when the sale finishes, the good stuff is back on the racks in February at normal price!! They are cunning buggers.

Any genuine brand name stuff is usually the garish rubbish that no-one wanted, or the left over elephant sizes, cos all the normal size stuff sold out. Myer are the world's worst at not stocking enough of the normal sizes eg, S, M, and L. They always have racks and racks of 2XXL etc. Their buyers and stock control system are useless.

They also have the same stuff on the sales. What doesn't sell gets boxed up and sent back to the warehouse with the Chrissie Decorations and brought out again next year. I have noticed a few times, exact same items that I saw the previous year, just with a new price sticker stuck over last years.

    • +1

They do have storerooms for old stock that is only brought out for BD. They can't keep it out all year round due to space issues. On BD and the days after there are crates everywhere and people don't complain but all year around and they definitely would.

I have found so many women's fashion bargains in small sizes in Djs and Myer. I can't speak for menswear though. I've bought Louboutins at 80% off and Chloe, Celine and Marc Jacobs clothing at 70% off. I love David Jones.

    • I agree with Myer & DJ's getting Van Huesan shirts just for boxing day. These shirts are more poly/cotton compared to the usual cotton/poly. You can usually tell by the "Assrt" colour where the bar code is.

Concession stores at Myer/DJ's are better managed so you'd probably have a better chance finding your size there compared to Myer/DJ's brand as they only get re-stocked once in a while.

spend 1 hour + looking for a car park for ho hum deals on mass consumer products, im passing like I have for the last few years.

  • Another disappointing year for boxing day sales.

  • My purchases - leather leggings at 52% off and skincare at 40% off.
    I have saved $610!
    I love BD!!!!

I hope everyone else can enjoy some bargains of their own.

  • Against my better judgement, I went to Southland this morning, place was heaving even at 8.50am! Did manage to find a car park though.

Spent about 4 hours there and came home with absolutely NOTHING. Waste of time, effort and petrol. Myer was a waste of time, I wanted a couple of shirts and found nothing I liked, or if I did, none in my size. No decent sunglasses to be found, unless I wasn't looking in the right place. DJ's had nothing to write home about either, and very few shirts. I will have to go to the city store next week when I return to work. They seem to have more stock in the city stores.

Harris Scarfe looked like an Indian bazaar at it always does. That store does my head in. Lots of lower socio-economics in Target. Didn't even bother with Kmart.

Strangely, there was hardly anyone in Big W. They seemed to have nothing in the way of bargains. Not sure why. Guess they'd tell us they have low prices every day so no need to discount.

Myer was packed to the rafters, but mostly people just wandering around and chucking the stock on the floor like they always do at sale time. Lines to the registers not as long as other years.

I also wanted a new toaster and had my eye on a Sunbeam toaster at Target before Xmas. Strangely all the Sunbeam toasters had vanished off the shelves at Target for sale time!

And yes, I am difficult and hard to please!

    • lol harris scarfe indian bazaar. Yeah I did notice a lot of carefree stock dropping at Myer, but some ok deals on some stuff. Ditto with DJ's

    • Try Bing Lee or Harvey Norman for your toaster. I have come across some good bargains on kitchen electrical at those stores on occasion. Cheaper than anyone else, & sheer luck to find they had a big special on just the product I wanted. I always check them now when I want that sort of thing.

      • +1

If going to HN, don't forget their amazing Flexirent plan for your toaster as well as the added warranty and protection plan. Sure it makes the item at least 5 times more than what you paid for it, but think of the amazing customer service they'll give you when you come back and try and claim!

  • +4

I went looking for office attire….shirts.

Very dissappointing…it was 50% off some very unusual high prices.

Have the Kathumandu pricing model infected all other retailers?

  • +1

They should just start it at midnight since most folks were camping out from 9-10ish Christmas night on Bourke Street, Melbourne. Lot of partying going on too hehe.

    • -5

Wow. When I do attend in Sydney I show up 10mins before the doors open and I am ALWAYS the first person in the store. You just need to know where to stand, how to stand, who to befriend and how to slip past people.

      • +3

So your the dude with the shopping trolley full of cans.

        • I've never seen him. Unfortunately I cannot take credit for that.

      • +1

so you saying you jumped the line? You should be shame of yourself for doing that. Other people genuinely lined up for it. Shame on you. Disgusting behavior.

      • +1

Are you proud of yourself for doing that?

    • People lined up only because of the free $100 gift card. I was one of them, ha ha :)

  • After working in retail many years, I can tell you that all there is for sale on Boxing Day is Christmas stock, sheet sets, cookware and towels. There's only so much of that stuff you need!

  • +9

I worked till 3pm, then went to the gym for a 2 hr session, then had a nap.

Checked ozbargain throughout the day for bargains.

Prefer online shopping any time of the day/year thanks to all ozbargainers efforts posting great deals.

  • Dicksmith had a sale on Ipad Air 16gb ($70 off)

The total cost in the end was $527. IMO a bargain for a relative new item.

The Panasonic TV sale was pretty good too if you needed a new set haha.

I was really disappointed with the David Jones sale. I was hoping to purchase a brand new pair of nudie jeans but there were no sale on them. Even buying them online seems hardly worth it as its almost the same price as RRP.

    • +2

David Jones has its biggest sale of the year in October.

Source: I used to work there.

BD sale is the same deals as June clearance.

  • +3

Yes boxing day sale is a waste of time….

Just visit this site often that's where the bargain to be had

  • +1

There seemed to be some good discounts on tv's this year. But alas no, I want to wait till a 100hz 50' screen is down around the 800 mark :S

  • I saved zilch. BigW looks alright for some odd reason, but that depends on your tastes. The rest are so-so.

    Good luck everyone today.

Maybe a new kettle from one of the other big stores. DJ & Myer & HN.

Then again maybe I have everything else from throughout the year sales, like eneloops, graphics cards and more.

  • I spot the Dlink dcs930l in DJ in BD for $52, still far expensive then on line shopping , The Kathmandu prize just disappoint .

    • What prize? Kathmandu lucky dip?

  • +2

NOTICE TO EVERYONE - David Jones online seems to have restocked some of the items that sold out yesterday. Try again if your item sold out in that size, colour etc.

  • I was happy with rivers and best and less. Got work shies for 12$ and lots of baby clothes for $2.5

  • Rivers 50% off storewide was probably the best thing I saw. Everything else was your usual stuff. Big W $5 game sale was a bust, JB didn't do anything special (they've been running 20% off blu rays for what seems like all year), Myer just has the usual stuff and there weren't any other stand outs.

  • i've never really found anything good on boxing day
everything good seems to sell before then and you are left with the crap that didn't sell

  • Eh, I got $200 off the marked price of a Razer Blade at JB HiFi. Advertised 2698, paid 2500. Cheaper than any other place I could find online (not including grey imports dodging GST).

    • +6

2500 for a gaming netbook? Sorry but the logic just blows me away why someone would buy such a thing …

      • +4

I'd say you got ripped off…

      • Notebook not netbook. It's running a GT765m in it.
It's small, it's light, it's powerful. I was looking for something small, light and powerful.
What else would you suggest that I can carry around with me, weighs under 2kg and run crysis 3 at 40fps?

        • +3

          Clevo W230ST?
          http://www.logicalblueone.com.au/store/557-horize-w230st-cle…
          http://www.affordablelaptops.com.au/contents/en-us/d450_meta…

Performance should be reasonably similar to the Blade when using the same settings.
Comes with higher resolution IPS display as well. Just need to factor OS into the cost.
Drawback is that it gets loud when under load.

          http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-One-K33-3E-Clevo-W230ST-…

        • Seen it, but didn't like it.

I bought a Clevo notebook from one of those two companies and it took three weeks to get here. Had to return it within 3 weeks of getting it (and they made me pay for shipping costs) because half the ports stopped working. Upon it being returned to me there were scratches on the casing that weren't there when I sent it off.

Not a fan of the gaps between the screen and the keyboard either on the left and right hand side, they frustrate me and I can't explain why.

    OZBargain killed Boxing Day.

I remember the days when we collected catalogues, looked out for ads on TV, prepped ourselves for boxing day sales.

Now, everyday is Boxing Day on OZBargain. We are so used to having bargains every single day, that we have forgotten how it was like without OZBargain. Too much of a good thing and we forget how much money we didn't get to save without these shared bargains. ZOMG.

    • Progress. Movimiento es vida.

  • MYER was good for Shirts and Iron today.

There were few good brands in Clearnace with more than 50% off [Parramatta store]. Moreover, they were giving additional 50% (yellow sticker) on already reduced price. I used MYER team member discount card to get an additional 20% off. Finally got very decent shirt in 8 AUD. Ended up paying 125+ for 10 shirts.

From MYER only, bought sunbeam Iron. It was half price (70 $). It is having 30$ cashback. Plus 20% staff discount. Got 6850 in 32 AUD only.

  • I spent over one grand on boxing day. I am very satisfied Sony $745 50 inch LTD TV, and the Xbox cash back deal makes the console to be the lowest price over the world.

  • lol my girlfriend bought lots of underwear for 3.50 previously $21 they just kept on reducing and reducing it… lol on boxind day Myer gardern city Perth. they also had a few of hourly sales that were unadvertised.

  • best buy for me was the folding rayban ultra aviators limited edition previously $500 bought mine for $250 at myer. but good luck finding them…

  • I Just got back from America christmas day. the ammount of sales they had there where incredible! Macys was crazy, had crazy sales every day. plus 10% off because we're from over seas. plus 10% on what ever sales they had. Then 1 day Macys had 70% sale. Me and my wife went absolutely crazy. spent so much. plus clothes are so much cheaper there anyway. plus better quality.
Sales will never be the same in australia :(

What sort of proof do you have to provide that you're from overseas?. Can you please list some of clothing deals you got?.

  • +1

Only thing i bought on boxing day wasnt even discounted. Picked up an Xbox One and Forza 5. Was going to grab a 360, but after upgrading the hard drive and adding kinect (missus wants to play dancing games) it was around the $200 mark for a console i already own. Also didnt work out to be cheaper then existing 250gb bundles were at times. (Even after cashback). So i figured id just drop the extra $400 to get a next gen console.

I think the value for money works out better. Mostly as i finally added something new and didnt double up just because it was cheap. Lol.

  • Did anyone grab a bargain this year?
