According to their website drivers are on a points system and are rewarded:
goPoints are awarded to you when you:
Collect a passenger
When you accept a short distance fare
When you enter the fare and send it to the passengers phone
When you accept payment from the passenger via the goCatch app. You will earn 4x times as many goPoints.

Life just isn't fare sometimes.
If your fare is less than $20 and you use the voucher you can use the remainder on another ride.
Does a fare have to be booked with the app, or can I just jump in a cab at the airport, get a lift home, then pay the driver with the app on my iPhone?
Don't think it works that way, I think it works like UBER.
Meaning you need to get a participating cab , not just a random cab, so using the app the get a cab is a must.

There don't seem to be many cabs in Perth using this though.
Maybe they are just all busy with the morning peak hour - but I'm not seeing a single cab in the western suburbs.
Nearest are Raj and Kumar, several km away.
Re the short ride question - you can offer them a tip in the app.
A wonder there are not more competitors, given the outrageous Cabcharge cost. Still best to use cash, as GoCatch charges 7.5% surcharge - not much better.
We're working on getting more Perth drivers on board! It's definitely one of the most challenging locations in Australia when it comes to taxis:)

How far would $20 get you in a GoCatch Taxi?
These are just regular taxis who choose to participate in the app. So the same plus the surcharge (someone above said it was 7.5% extra). So you save vs CabCharge but not vs cash. The $20 off is good though!
good for me .. live in the city so most cab rides are around $10 :)

Are their fares the same as normal taxi fares (other than the 7.5% surcharge) eg. the Taxi Services Comm. fares in Victoria?
For Victoria at least, fares are mandated by the Taxi Services Commission://www.taxi.vic.gov.au/passengers/taxi-passengers/taxi-fares#metropolitan

In the app there's a map showing cabs in the area. If you tap on them, you see the drivers names.

Used this app on New Years eve (10PM).
Pressed "GoCatch" and had a cab within 3 minutes. No joke, wasn't even in the CBD.
The driver even called me as he was pulling up.

also it says - voucher can only be applied to taxi rides taken between the 2nd and the 9th of January 2014. Since i have activated my voucher today on the 2nd, the $20 is credit, correct? so can i still use the money say on the 11th or 12th? or is it specifically designed to be expired after the 9th.

You must be connected to the internet to use the app and take advantage of the voucher. The voucher will only be applied to taxi rides taken up until the 9th of January 2014. The 9th of January is the last day you can use the voucher, after that any unused credit will be expired.

What i mean is, i will book the cab from my house to be picked up at my house, i will use my own wifi, but since i have an iPod, i will not have internet access during the ride, therefore, is it still possible to use the voucher?

You won't be able to, unfortunately, as the driver must mark the job 'complete' before you can use the app to pay (and use the voucher). Does this work with the Windows Phone app? I've used it successfully before but can't remember a voucher section.

Hi guys, the voucher functionality is currently only available on the latest versions of the iOS and Android apps. BB10 and WP7 coming soon. Further update, there's been an overwhelming response to the vouchers and our allocation for this promotion is almost completely gone so if you haven't redeemed the voucher yet make sure you do it now!

also i dont get it- to pay for the fare- using the app …wherever you are- it will not be on wifi obviously but on 3g/4g network…please explain how to use this voucher for the slower ones amongst us..
In order to use the voucher you must open the app and enter the code HAPPYNY2014 into the 'voucher' section (only available on the latest versions of the iOS and Android apps). Your goCatch account will be credited with $20.
You can then use the app to book a taxi, once the ride ends you can use the app to pay which will use up the $20 credit. In order to use the app you must be connected to the internet. If you don't have an internet connection on your phone you will not be able to use the app, apply the voucher or pay for the ride.
The last day you can use the taxi credit from this voucher is the 9th of January 2014. Any outstanding credit after that will expire.
The voucher allocation is almost completely exhausted (2/3 of the vouchers we made available have been allocated so far!).

Melbourne Taxi drivers will already openly abuse you if you enter their cab for a short trip. I don't believe the collection of "GoPoints" will do much to change this.
Furthermore I'm concerned that showing destination and tip to the driver before they choose to except will result in Taxi's to the highest bidder.
This does not appear to be a good service for the consumer and casual traveller…
Why do cabbies not like short trips? I'd imagine they'd like them, since proportionally they'd be getting more per hour/minute/km than they would for a long trip..

Used voucher last night. Seamless use of the app. As soon as I hit gocatch, my cabby called me and was at my pickup address in under 30 seconds. Payment through the app was simple, and the voucher covered the whole fare. I will definitely use again and will recommend to my friends. Thanks OP and rep.

Used gocatch for the first time yesterday - arrived at the destination and wasnt able to receive the payment request from the driver (the driver tried multiple times). Ended up paying by credit card which kind defeated the purpose of the app… hopefully the issue can be rectified
